every time you get in your car to go to the store does your car magically get better? Do you wash it before you leave every time? what about when you are travelling long distance do you stop every time you refuel and do a whole system's check?... your car and that rocket are much different, BUT that isn't going to be the only one, it will be used reused and used some more, it will get inspections, but it will not be gone through taken apart and rebuilt every time... like your car in that manner. I know it is an exciting time, but let's keep expectations on the ground and just let the rockets shoot off into space. keep it real and it will be real. If you make it something it is not, even in your own mind, you will only find yourself disappointed eventually.

@@troychampion Firstly - my car DOES get better - not with EVERY drive - but a dozen or more times per year. That's because it has "over-the-air-updates" - which means that there are software imptovements that can be (and often are) done to it all the time. Also, SpaceX won't be improving one specific rocket. They'll change the design a bit - and then make a new one. Because Starship and Superheavy are made of cheap stainless steel - the engines are mostly 3d printed - they use lots of Tesla car parts - these are CHEAP and EASY to build. So they'll do what they've been doing for the past two or three years... build something, tryit - figure what broke - build a new one... over and over again until it works perfectly.

They have to shut all the engines off on the booster to release Starship. So that means they won't use all 33 engines to land with. They can't restart the outer 20. 12:09

@kstaxman2 2 жыл бұрын
@@59seank I believe you are correct that the starting system to spin up the engines in the outer ring won't be there after launch. It's done with engines on the launch tower I'm pretty certain. So that means no way to light the outer ring of engines exist after launch.
@SteveBakerIsHere
@SteveBakerIsHere 2 жыл бұрын
They don't need anywhere near all of those engines to land with. Firstly, they don't have to cope with the weight of a fully-laden StarShip balanced on the top. Secondly, almost all of the fuel in the SuperHeavy is used up. It's now an incredibly light structure. Three engines are all it needs - and it could actually land with just one of them running.
@GntlTch
@GntlTch 2 жыл бұрын
@@59seank Exactly! There are 20 quick disconnects around the periphery o the launch mount. Same reasoning that eliminated the landing legs - don't need to restart the outer ring engines so don't need to launch/carry that extra weight. Also, no way in hell are the engines still running during stage separation! The only way to separate the stages is to remove all thrust. The 230 ton thrust Raptor 2 engine raised the possible payload to LEO from 100 tons to 150 tons. The Raptor 1 engines could still have launched Starship to LEO. Even if they couldn't, it would NOT have meant an explosive ocean landing. Please get your facts straight. Your videos are pretty good but these mistakes/misinformation gives the entire video a black eye.

once starship reenters the atmosphere it will gradually slow down to terminal velocity, which is approximately 70 m/s. At 2:30, no matter what height starship falls from it will have the same impact if the landing isn't nominal.

@@h.a.9880 lithobraking...or in this case...hydrobraking at 70 m/s is 150mph - and I doubt many people survive a 150mph car or airplane crash. But I agree that with enough crumple-zone under their seats - and a back-first impact - they could survive. But if there are a couple of tonnes of propellant left aboard - the resulting deflagration would be impressive- and their odds of survival drop dramatically. Now that both methane and oxygen header tanks are in the nose - and you have two large volumes containing gaseous oxygen and methane in the main tanks below you - it's not going to end well. You've only got to look at the consequences of failures of the SN-series hop tests to see how big an explosion you can get from even a very slow speed impact.

As a Brit, I would love to see a lift-off first hand, but, at almost 69 yrs old, it won't happen now, except for on tv. Without the weight of Starship, and very little fuel, SH could well destroy itself by firing all it engines. Moreover, without the launch platform, the outer ring of engines cannot be restarted. The boost back may use the inner 13, the landing likely 3.
@SteveBakerIsHere
@SteveBakerIsHere 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah - without a fairly full tank of fuel - it's like an empty coke can - REALLY easy to crush compared to a full can. For landing, using more than 3 engines would be impossible. Even on minimum throttle, 4 or more engines would produce more thrust than is required to keep it in a hover - and it would instead re-launch. Falcon-9 has the same problem with just ONE engine - and has to perform that terrifying "hover-slam" maneuver to cut the thrust at the precise moment it hits zero speed and at the precise altitude of zero. SuperHeavy can't do that because it has no landing legs. It MUST hover - at least briefly - while the chopsticks get themselves lined up.

Will become nearly 3 times bigger when it switches to using detonative instead of explosive acceleration of propulsion. The drive to low Earth orbit will be only 1/10h the time = 10 times greater g forces on the cargo and crew = only hihh level pilot training can allow you to survive the high efficiency escape from Earth's gravity. Good thing it's a matter of seconds as opposed to minutes and then there is decelleration due to micro gravity, even thiugb you will still escape Earth orbit from that momentum alone. Such detonation driven Star Ship would not need orbital refuel, it would just go directly to Mars and even faster than it would take for concerning levels of irradiation to bombard and warp the crew dna.

I would not call it hate, but Blue Origin deserves some teasing. For all its talk and put downs of SpaceX, it has not made it to orbit yet. The Soviets made it to orbit in 1957.

I'm really looking forward to the first orbital test, but I can bet my life on the fact that it won't be a success. It will either never reach orbit or fail during re-entry, which is such a violent process. Btw, I'm not Elon's hater, just reserving a bit of realistic caution.

33 Engines on re-entry isn't possible i.e. the outer engines can't relight because the necessary equipment for it is integrated in the launch mount.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the video and its content, I like many others believe the title to be very misleading. Understandably creators attempt to grab your attention with some hype titles and this one falls into that category for sure. I also believe you can have an eye-catching title to attract viewers without the misleading hype. Thanks for allowing me to comment. 😃

A valiant, yet i fear altogether futile attempt, to get Truth into You-Tube video titles. (They don't listen, or care - it's all about the view count/subscriptions). Keep on tilting at those windmills Dude, I'm right behind ya on my donkey. ;-)

No, the outer most ring of 20 engines don't have the ability to restart. Only the inner 13 will fire for landing.

Good video! Two points: -If the Starship can launch Starlinks then it can also launch other sats modified for the Starlink launcher. -There is no reason that 29 Raptor 1 engines could not have made it to a successful orbit. It is only because regulatory delays made it a better decision to go with the simpler more powerful 33 Raptor 2 engines. Do you really think with all of Space X's experience they did not do the calculations?

Successful operation of starship will certainly see the launch format of non Spacex LEO constellations alter to flat pack. Lets wait and see how long it takes. My guess is China will be a close follower.

The outer ring of engines on the booster CANNOT restart! They need the orbital launch mount to start (stage 0)! This was done to cut down weight on the booster! Only the inner engines will restart as the booster carries COPVs for these to start them (outer ring COPVs are on stage0).

I consider a launch with recovery of the booster possible with on board automation making the decision. I understand both the booster and starship have Starlink terminals installed to better gather all data possible. This allows the dump into ocean of the Starship with possible future recovery to avoid prying eyes of Russian or Chinese later. Also, that is why off Hawaii was selected where it can be monitored as needed.

If Elon wants to guarantee that China can't evesdrop on the return of Starship, he could have it drop into the Gulf of Mexico, or somewhere off Virginia's coast, where our Navy's fleet could recover it. :o)
