Hard to get jaded when they're doing stuff I only imagined I'd see in Sci-fi movies in my lifetime. The heavy side boosters landing beside each other at the same time is still hard to believe it's real while watching it; never mind this literal spaceship they're currently working on that can land and take off from other planets. I fully believe I will get to see humans living on Mars in my lifetime; couldn't say that just 5-10 years ago.

Yesterday I saw on Twitter that apparently the FCC had released a license for IFT-3 which stated that it would employ an "orbital Starship vehicle" which would perform a "powered landing" in the Indian Ocean! That means the third flight will employ B10 and S28, not S26, Starship will actually try to achieve orbit (otherwise the Indian Ocean wouldn't make sense) AND we will hopefully witness the first flip'n'burn maneuver since SN15!

Why not land in the Atlantic near a drone ship to video it and gain more information than just the telemetry?
@disorganizedorg
@disorganizedorg 6 ай бұрын
@@Scanner9631 Why not land in the Indian ocean and launch drones with cameras from a nearby speedboat, able to move swiftly out of the way in case the booster is going to land closer than a few miles? That seems a lot cheaper than moving one of the existing drone ships, making it unavailable for Starlink missions. Plus I'm going to guess that it's easier to clear a large section of the Southern Indian Ocean at a useful latitude compared to the Atlantic.
@simongeard4824
@simongeard4824 6 ай бұрын
That seems unlikely... the Indian ocean is a long way away and lacking in suitable monitoring infrastructure, compared to the IFT1 / IFT2 plan of descending into the Pacific missile test range, which has some of the best tracking systems on the planet - and which being a US military missile test range, is more easily closed off and secured than some random bit of international waters a long way away.

Seems to me they should design a smaller version of a drone ship and use it as a bullseye to test the booster accuracy. Since pinpoint accuracy will be absolutely required for RTLS.
@simongeard4824
@simongeard4824 6 ай бұрын
@@86FxBdyCpe They don't need a drone ship for that... GPS coordinates for a designated piece of water are much easier, and much safer. They're not going to be putting any kind of hardware in the target area until they're already confident in that accuracy.

Man, these galactic photos really put into perspective the finality of human life and Earth. Without some kind of faster-than-light engine, and communication system, humans that leave Earth for new worlds-outside of our solar system-should immediately be considered deceased, and vice-versa. Relativity is no joke.

The reason for the hard belly landing on the ocean is that they want it to break up and sink. Would be much more expensive to recover it.
@just_archan
@just_archan 6 ай бұрын
There is that but also: belly flop require working engines, means there would be lot of fuel inside (few tones), with risk that it will not ignite or it will be damaged too much during re-entry... It's environmental risk. Second: validation of aerodynamic models SpaceX uses in simulations. It's: keep it simple to have more valuable data.

@@fixinggood4595 explosion. And noise/shockwave that can make pretty damn impact on environment (SpaceX is struggling enough with fws). Simply investigation of this misshap could hold for long next licence. Much more expensive misshap would be if header tanks would SURVIVE splashdown. Simply recovery would not be possible, and closure would take longer, as there was risk of explosion of highly pressurised vessel with volatile material.

@@DannyJoh yup. I think first bellyflop we will be seeing when Starship survives re-entry in good enough shape. Or at least when it survives long enough that they will be sure that chances to survive are high enough. I suspect that they don't believe that first ship survive start and maxQ with heatshield intact. But they need hard data to identify weak points. I think spaceX got enough cameras outside to inspect large portions of heatshield while in space, and heatcameras inside payloadbay and tanks to inspect heat from inside during re-entry
