@engineeredlifeform12 күн бұрын
@@varun2250 "Well this is a completely new technology that they are developing as the first movers." Nope. They have decades of previous experience to refer to. It was 66 years between the Wright Bros first flight and Apollo 11 landing on the Moon. It's now 56 years after that. Achieving less than decades before is not acceptable, especially when New Glenn achieved orbit on it's _first flight_ this week. "They are making a second stage that can directly reach the moon with refueling." If it has to refuel it's not 'direct' is it? "Saturn V only sent a small module from its top stage. Big difference in the approach." Saturn V kept it simple and succeeded. Starship has thus far launched a banana. You need to go and watch the video from Destin / Smarter Every Day where he examines the Starship mission profile and compares the project management strategy to the Apollo missions.

There are a lot of really stupid and really bitter people on CNN KZbin. The unprecedented capture of a skyscraper sized booster rocket is an engineering marvel, for a second time. The Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly has happened before with SpaceX and they’ve learned just as much from the data as the other tests. This was a test flight. Taxpayers did not pay for this mission, which was an incredible success in almost every way (the prototype was supposed to be lost either way, with a scheduled unrecovered splashdown) The incredible engineering advances made by SpaceX cannot be overstated! As a matter of fact the incredible engineering advances with the Cybertruck are pretty incredible, too! It’s arguably ugly, but under the bulletproof skin it’s groundbreaking.
@alexbernadina308212 күн бұрын
How is it unprecedented if this capture happens for the second time? huh?
@vmanrn290612 күн бұрын
Well, the statement that Tax payers did not pay for this is not entirely precise. SpaceX gets more NASA money than any other company, and they have several Startship related contracts including a 3 billion USD contract to use Starship as moon lander. As impressive as the catch is, it is a big problem that they now after 15 launches (2 x Starhopper, 6 x Starship upper stage and 7 times full stack have not yet demonstrated any ability to put actual useful payload into useful orbits. I know its ambitious, I know its ground breaking and I know all the other excuses. But at the end of the day SpaceX is a business, and they have already put a lot of money into a system, that seems to still have a long way to go before it can start paying back. If it was not for the fact that the F9 has turned out to be such a beast, we would be talking bankruptcy by now.
@engineeredlifeform12 күн бұрын
As someone already said, but I'm saying it again, SpaceX has had $3Bn from NASA to develop Starship to be used in the upcoming Artemis Moon mission, so yes, Taxpayers ARE funding this. This is launch #7, by launch #6 Saturn V had put astronauts on the Moon. Meanwhile Starship has missed every mission milestone. It's not even got to orbit yet and still has to solve in orbit refuelling. (oh, so they actually have to launch some payload, which they haven't yet)

What is the advantage of having the booster return to the tower, as opposed to retrieving it from the ocean? If anyone knows, are they more dense than water relative to its volume? Would it be difficult/more expensive to build it capable of retrieval by water? Thanks all
@sacresula7 күн бұрын
Mostly much quicker turn around time. Each Falcon 9 booster landing at sea would take about a day to come back to port. Plus having to fold the legs and then transport back to the facility for refurbishment take a lot of time, time that can be cut by landing it at the launch site.

Too much vibrational flexing, if you design for the minimum, somewhere the anomaly will show up and overflex, exceed the minimal standards never expected.
