When I visited San Agustín the first city built in the current United States, as Spaniard I felt very proud. Besides seeing so many flags not only of US but also of Spain was wonderful. I drove from Miami to Washington DC and really the most kind people I have ever found in all my life (54 years old) have been the American people all along this trip. So good behaviour, kindness and happynes. Wonderful people. Thank You!. God Bless USA and Viva España!

Spain respected Indian rights much more than other countries. As early as the 16th Century it was illegal to enslave Indians in Spanish territory.

Agreed. The Spanish Empire was more inclusive and less racist compared to the British.
@ludwigramirez47112 жыл бұрын
We hispanics are Catholics after all. The racist stuff came from anglos, germans and scandinavians who due to their wacko protestant movement they ended viewing themselves as the master race or something and claimed those who weren't germanic prots like them had no souls, like native americans, africans, celts or southern catholic europeans. Protestantism also influenced liberalism and communism, unlikely as it may sound, since protestantism was religious liberalism that broke with Catholic Tradition and opened the door to every sort of ideas and mindthinks that would oppose to the previous Monarchical Catholic system.

They dont want to grow, learn anything, respect other peoples ideas, ect. They glorify being self entitled and stupid. You may think im being harsh, but in reality im being accurate.

Eran colonias.
@nicomedes9555 Жыл бұрын
@@Garcwyn The viceroyalties were not even remotely comparable to colonies. Count the universities, hospitals, cathedrals, missions, founded cities, etc. made in formal colonies of any power, of any time, anywhere, and compare all of this with the Spanish Empire. Compare also who has extensively left their culture, religion and at the same time mestizos and natives alive everywhere, and who has left only colonizers or only colonized.

Well. Spain never own colonies in America. They were called Virreinatos and Capitanías Generales and they had far diferent laws from colonies, like self rules and judges.

It is a very interesting conference. I am Spanish, and as such, I find it very positive that little by little historical justice is done to the Spanish legacy in the United States. The cause of figures such as Bernardo de Galvez suffering a "damnatio memoriae" in educational programs and in the official narrative of the United States is due to two factors: "manifest destiny" and the "monroe doctrine" whose arguments turned the Spanish ally into an enemy. I think it's time to honor those who one day helped birth a new and prosperous nation.

@sterroberries039511 ай бұрын
Inglaterra y Francia no reconocieron el tratado de Tordesillas ni ningún otro reino de Europa. Sólo porque España y Portugal decidieron repartirse el mundo con arrogancia no significa que otros reinos estuvieran obligados a seguirlo.

From the first phase of the conquest, Spanish Queen Isabel, prohibited the slavery of Indians but the conquerors ignored it. By 1527, Las Leyes Nuevas (The New Laws) establishes that any slavery (encomienda) has to be approved by the church, which determines if it is for indigenous social development or if it is not prudent. By 1542, King Carlos ordered the abolition of indigenous slavery and paid work was considered, there are charts that shows how much indians can make, can selling products whether is by weight or amounts and how much would the taxes be. Back in the Modern Era, Spanish presence in actual America was huge since a great territory of America used to be part of el virreinato de Nueva España (Viceroyalty of New Spain) and that is the reason why many cities, states and roads have spanish names.

This was excellent.Because I am from B'ham,Alabama, I knew a little about this because of visits to Mobile, P'cola, New Orleans, St. Augustine and NOLA; however, I didn't know about Admiral Galvez until a few years ago. I had even been to Galveston! I think Southern cities from Charleston to the Gulf need to do a better job of educating the public about the Revolutionary War. My Hitchcock ancestors were POWS from Col.Gist's Brigade of Virginia after the Battle of Charleston( reportedly on prison ships in the harbor).When I went to Charleston years ago I did not know this, and there was nothing said about the defeat at that battle. I studied history at U.Va. as an undergrad. Had Ed Ayers, Joe Kett, etc. Again, thanks for your work. J.R.S.,Jr.,Esq.
