@Gary Ray Cardoso Maybe you're right, and although I understand the concept and the need of minimizing pain and applying techinques of "humane slaghter", those are really words not deserving to be in the same sentence nor have anything to do with one another. What I want to say is if one or a society comes as close as to start considering humane ways of doing harm, it's high time and a great opportunity for more fundamental changes. But it's really important to acknowledge the motives in play in this particular situation, in all those present, the bullfighters and the spectators. They latter are paying and the former getting paid, both equally thrilled, to participate and enjoy watching a slowly-tortured innocent helpless being which will be led to its death, all the while cheering and enthusiastically applauding. And I came here to enquire whether there are no clinics around these areas to attend to those deranged poor people!

@Gary Ray Cardoso True, I'm torn as well because on one hand you want to reduce pain and torment and better the life conditions prior to an also more "humane" killing, by pushing certain laws and regulations regarding factory farming. On the other hand this humane factor, which would also be heavily propagandized if they sensed a threat to their profits, would tend to provide a false and dangerous justification to an unnecessary and cruel act to those eagerly searching for one, some way to alleviate guilt, in order to change none of their eating habits. People say: since it was "free range" and "humanely" killed, it's ok. What you propose, in contrast to the living hell of factory farming, is of course much better and would allow people, for once, to both face their victim and take full responsibility of their actions, leaving most of them unable to proceed with the dirty job they pay someone else, admittedly much more desperate, to take care for them. I'm referring to those factory farm workers.

I have a lot of personal things to say, but there is something not personal that I want to say. I have a friend, a guy who grew up in a family that had a love of bullfighting. He loved it, and he still loves it. But he's told me that every time a girlfriend finds out about his passion for it, they either leave him immediately, or leave after failing to 'convert' him. This friend has all but given up on finding a woman that shares his love of this thing, and hasn't told his current lady. So, this video makes me hopeful for him.

Once I thought it was cruel but if you think about it, it is a tradition. Just like any other tradition it is used today like in america where we force feed livestock just to kill them for mass consumption. While this tradition earns respect to the bullfighter and yes after the bull is killed it is sent to the slaughterhouse already dead. I've been watching bullfights since I was about seven years old, in the 1940's. I watched in Colombia, in Spain and in Mexico. When you grow up with it, you understand the history and art more than the cruelty. It is now being outlawed in more and more places, and so be it. I can't help but have some thoughts on it. (1) Bulls/cows are slaughtered all the time. Don't complain about it while enjoying a big whopper. (2) In many professions, there is a ritual expression of the "highest art," the best of the best, a ceremonial process where practitioners show their prowess. In this respect, it's no different than a good ole farmers' tractor pull. It is a very human need. OK, do away with it. But, in the meantime, don't feel so superior. Don't like it; but, don't condemn it without some understanding. Bull fights have been pictured in Minoan times-- three thousand years ago. (3) Many Spaniards and Latin Americans share your view, so don't condemn them. They live with it, and are more reconciled than an outraged hippy in Iowa.

They are bred to be very brave, and light on their feet, and actually putting more weight on their haunches so they can do those quick moves. They have an excellent athletic posture that is like pure dressage training in action. It's the Vaquero tradition that's being lost somewhat in the rest of the horse world. This horse looks to me to trust the rider and trainer to keep him out of trouble. I really hope when she retires that she passes on her training secrets to others.

It has rules, is has fairness. and after the fight the combattants leave the field alive (in most cases) and hopefully uninjured - it's never the goal of a sport fight to kill the rival. It´s not cruel because it is a combat, in which the bullfighter has more advantage yes, but a combat nonetheless that shows the eternal combat between men and beast, where the bullfighter is expected to behave with elegance and according to certain rituals. As for it being torture, well I don´t see the bull tied down and receiving blows without being able to move, it´s running wild and defending himself. Also, it´s important to note that when the bull receives too many blows to get killed the crowd starts booing precisely because people don´t want to see the bull suffer excessively and when it´s time for the bull to die, they want effectiveness and no more unnecessary violence. I get that people might not like but it´s cultural and artistic, so just don´t watch it if you don´t like it and I hope I cleared some misconceptions about it.

I liked the way you explain it. I'm a bit undecided as to what I think of it. On the one hand, the bull does suffer but then it's not like it's a pleasant, harmless animal anyway and it would be killed in any event regardless if it's this way or another way

I recommend you watch a guy called Roca Rey, this is the sort of guy that risks his life every bullfight and has been gored some times. He has balls of steel and he is quite elegant. If you wanna gain some admiration for bullfighting watch him

I was googling bullfighting, and this result from an NPR article said-to paraphrase-that if the matador (I'm thinking/talking about... "True" matadors? Non-mounted/straight leg matadors?), Were to find that the bull "behaved well", that the matador would (rarely) pardon the bull/not kill it, and so I tried wording my question all sorts of ways to fong out what constitutes the bull "behaving well" enough to not be slain? Like, are they saying if the bull doesn't act aggressive? Which doesn't make sense because these animals are purposely raised with little to zero human contact in order to be aggressive, plus any other practices to ensure they're nice and mean, and that is the whole point of the bullfight; if the bull was well behaved and docile, then there is no bullfight, so I guess... If anyone who knows a lot about bullfighting/comes from or lives in a country where it's practiced in its truest, most traditional form, if yous can explain what "behaving well" on the bull's part means or looks like?
