Thousands of people in Majorca are protesting against the surge in tourism that is being blamed for plummeting living standards among the local population.
Activists say spiralling housing costs on the Spanish Island are being driven by a huge number of properties being bought by foreigners.
This year, the anger among many locals is reaching a new level - notably demonstrated in Barcelona recently when visitors were drenched with water pistols.

It's happening everywhere, not just Spain. In the UK, homes are being bought up by Russian, Saudi, and Chinese investors which pushes up prices even more for the local population. This is a global problem that needs solving.

I´m Spanish, living near Barcelona and I go to Barcelona every day, and while it ´s true that the ammount of tourists is not sustainable for this kind of city, I don´t understand why we don´t squirt water on the politicians who allowed all this to happen. A tourist just looks for a place to stay and enjoy some time off, they don´t check what the housing price for a local is and do a bunch of research on the local economy before coming, that´s crazy. Same as when we go to another country, book a room, go to restaurants, bars, the beach... that´s it. I would say someone must be behind this and is taking advantege of tired neighbours, because it´s clear that this solves nothing.

I’ve lived in France, Spain and Italy and in all 3 places it’s generally taboo to be seen wasted in public. I live in Mallorca. The issue is far more complex than the media present. The locals cannot afford to buy or rent homes due to more reasons than tourists and their accommodation needs. Work here is mostly seasonal and the employment model is absolute rubbish. Spain taxes businesses punitively when employing workers and as a result pay low wages leaving the worker with a disposable income that most of Europe regard as derisory. On top of this, being part of the EU, many northern Europeans fed up with their weather and increasingly domineering politics, are moving to Mallorca. They have a lot of money and I think mostly responsible for cleaning up the property market in the middle income region. It will never be easy to solve this imbalance with the type of government and commercial ethics we have here in Spain. But perhaps the weather will be the final decider, as it gets hotter and hotter each summer, people are less inclined to come. This is a major problem for agriculture as well, which we are seeing in Sicily, Sardinia and other Med islands. People have to learn to be more respectful and less selfish.

Tourism is only 12% of the gross product in Spain and the jobs in this sector are the worst paid in the country. Its kinda slave work from morning to night and nobody wants to do it. Thats why they hire mostly inmigrants. You will see a lot of people from south America and North Africa but not much spaniards if they are not well paid. Young spaniards work in touristic sector only if they dont have an alternative, but normally they prefer to leave the country and work in another place lik UK, USA or Germany.

I am Spanish and I don't think this behaviour is 100% fair. I can understand massive tourism has maybe gone too far in some Spanish cities/regions, but tourists are not to blame. The Spanish economy as a whole incredibly benefits from tourism (and that also includes those who are demonstrating). The Spanish government year after year promotes tourism and that should change. Water should be addressed towards our terrible politicians instead of against tourists.

They could simply build more hotels and hotels with bungalow style cottages for those seeking longer short term rentals as well as your basic rooms. And then they can ban airbnb and put those houses back in the housing market. It would take years to build a flood of affordable houses and then to create regulations

I mean the reason the UK lost tourist trade is because of the UK - trains alone are a fortune and that’s not even including the delays and cancellations etc. (due to them being privatised). A flight to Spain / Italy / France can be as cheap as £5-10 (like Ryanair), whereas a train ticket can be up to £300 one way sometimes.
