The problem with Spain are the laws their are plenty of empty houses but owners are too scared to lease their houses because of tenants they lease the property for a while then they stop paying rent because they can’t afford it then you try throwing them out what ahead ache then there is another problem Squatters the laws are too soft on these 2 things nothing is for free in life you want something you Earn it!

I spent a lot evicting tenants who paid the depósito and one month's rent and no more, they we're presented to me initially by a local estate agency so I had no suspicions. 😢Lovely people, but no money or chance of employment. It was a short contract initially so I had to pay the electricity (and automatically as owner the wáter and local taxes). Question is, when a lot of properties are empty why is there no way for local govt to ensure they can get used on a safe basis for owners and tenants? Could be a pipe dream.....

@@Helen14R if you can’t afford to rent a property in the first place don’t lie to the owner and pretend you can the property cost you money it wasn’t for free then you must charge rent because of repayment to the bank and council tenants know that but they don’t care no excuses they are doing the wrong thing in the first place they should get evicted immediately and their criminality ideas trying to screw the landlord and the costs to kick them out make the tenants pay for it these should be the laws of the country

It’s amazing how things get ignored and twisted resulting in a “solution” being implemented but the problem actually gets worse. The UK and the EU doesn’t have a “housing problem”, they have an immigration problem. Their “solution”, building more houses will make it worse, more housing and people put more on all infrastructure from health to energy, and it will atrract even more immigrants.

I am shocked at how poor the systems are for land and housing ownership are in Spain. This same issue exists in a Peru where I have a lot of experience. Seems like this is a historical structural issue in Spanish societies. Whereas here in USA there is title insurance and well defined processes for property transfers just because people will build illegally.

The same problem is everywhere and perhaps the law is not applied well in all that everywhere, but in Spain it is. Perhaps you will be more surprised to know that some laws from the Spanish King Alfonso X the Wise regarding property apply in the United States. That's why there is a bust of him in the House of Representatives of Congress.

Too bad those with the least love and respect in their hearts in Barcelona are giving Barcelona a bad look. It's been a mixing pot since the Roman days and successfully integrated many people over the millenia into its wonderful society. The real issue is unfetterd elite capitalism, not people who have enough money to be able to travel and experience different cultures.

I understand the problem of cost of housing but if the spainish government built houses just for spainish like our council houses. That would make homes affordable. I will not be taking my family to Spain or majorca anytime soon. If they don't want us then that's good enough for me. We will see if they can afford to keep the country running without all the tourists .

Hi Stu, I'm just back from the Costa Blanca, and I was astonished by the number of houses being built. Most if not all of these houses will be purchased by foreign buyers, and the Spanish government will receive 10%, of the purchase cost, plus other taxes, which helps the Spanish economy. When you have foreigners coming to your country, draining the exchequer, and contributing nothing, then you have a problem. I enjoy your excellent videos Stu, thank you!.

@@Vangough792 English retirees use a system thats is payed both by the UK and surprise surprise by Spain too. Retirees are unlikely to create bussiness and in the case they did, would be for english customers only. They may drink some or a lot of gintonics, of course in english run pubs. After 20 years they will not know more than hola y adiós (in the case they do) and will be bizarrely proud of that... Rise of RE prices apart...would you take back 300.000 old english people back? Sure the NHS powerful as it is would not suffer a dent

@Vangough792 Yes, an affordable house for a British, German, or Dutch national, may not be affordable for a Spanish national, as wages in Spain are so low. I can understand why the Spanish would feel angry, and upset, as they are not competing on a level playing field.
@michaeltravers6109
@michaeltravers6109 2 ай бұрын
@Vangough792 Exactly, Europeans buying property in Spain, and availing of private medical insurance are not draining the exchequer. The problem is with illegal migrants, presenting as asylum seekers, and availing of benefits is a problem, because there is no control on the numbers entering the country. From my experience, the British make a positive contribution to Spain, and are highly regarded.

I am currently walking the Camino and the amount of empty houses and apartment buildings you see is amazing. Yes I know they need repairs but why isn't migrants being sent to the country, here they will be able to repair the house they are living in. They might have a chance to show the locals that they want to work and work might come their way

Very often the dying towns offer repaired houses, 100 goats, everything to make cheese even the customers... and nobody goes. That's an actual example in San Esteban, at the Asturian side of the Tresviso-Desfiladero de la Hermida. Even the younger pilgrims avoid this path nowadays.

In my humble opinion, Gibraltar is one of those recurrent issues, popping up from time to time here. Nobody really thinks about it everyday. Nevertheless, it is a thorny and delicate issue in the back of the mind for many Spaniards and seen as a lack of sensitivity and good will from the British side. The excuse is that "llanitos" want to remain being British (while many enjoy having a house in Spain), but I doubt people in Hong Kong were given that choice (China is more dangerous and aggressive than Spain and Hongkongers feel now abandoned). It is just an excuse, just remember that Menorca was also part of the same treaty and eventually returned back to Spain from British hands. How British would feel if Spain had a small territory in England? Moreover, if we want to stick to the legalities of an old treaty, there are many that are not fulfilled by the UK: 1. UN recognized Gibraltar is a colony and should be decolonized 2. In the Treaty of Utrecht no territorial waters were recognized, but the British navy harass our fishermen and police 3. the isthmus where the airport was built is also not part of the territory (it was used to allocate sick people during an outbreak in Gibraltar and never given back by the British). Therefore, it is understandable how many Spaniards feel about this and the stubborn British position is considered outdated and humiliating. The best solution would be that of co-sovereignty. Please, do not compare the case of Ceuta and Melilla if you don't know their history. The only case I think is similar is that of Olivenza with Portugal, but at least the people of Olivenza have some benefits as double nationality and learning of the Portuguese language.

Great post, Deigo, with great knowledge. But not exactly from a neutral position, Morocco, for instance. I do like your suggestion of mutual governance but may prove impossible. so the only solution perhaps is to move out the population and repatriation, I don't think so, perhaps it's best to accept the status quo, maybe best.

Canary islands were not a country, but separate tribes in the XV century (even within each island). Not possible to compare these cases. UK also has many islands.
