Seriously, didn't realize what I had here in AZ until I found knapping. The four corners states are magical.

Steel hammer ain't bad. Could probably do the same less agressive with a copper or brass mallet. Some antler stock is massive enough too. Thanks for the video and time, beautiful stone ya picked up

hi just wondering how you get these large amounts of obsidian a 20 pound piece cost me about 85 - 100 dollars how can i get affordable obsidian? thanks

On the first piece of mahogany, it does appear that there was already an incipient crack (visible between 2:56 & 2:58) where it broke. Considering how thin the previous spall had left the middle, even without a crack the piece would almost certainly have broken when you hit it on the far end. I found myself saying "Don't hit it there!" when you pulled it around, but I guess my volume wasn't up high enough for you to hear me. Some very careful and well supported trimming on the near end to eliminate the dumbbell shape is what I would have attempted but with the crack it was pretty much already doomed. The video doesn't show very well the platforms and angles you are hitting. Consider doing another demo using a second camera from your other side so viewers can get a better look at just what you are doing.

Cool and informative spalling instruction! Where do you find obsidian that large?

Mahogany obsidian is beautiful, but prone to snapping. Hands us a learning curve

How much time do you practice flintknapping?
@Flintknappingsupplies6 жыл бұрын
I spall around 15,000-20,000lbs of stone a year. I don't do much finish work mostly spalling.

Thanks! I think I picked up a few tips! Great Job!

Where are you getting those giant pieces of obsidian
@Flintknappingsupplies6 жыл бұрын
Those pieces came from out west, Mexico I think!
@donnparis1376 жыл бұрын
An excellent source of obsidian in the States is the Glass Buttes area of east central Oregon. Look it up on any search engine. It's worth a good deal of travel even if you are not very close. You are limited to 250 pounds per person (bring friends!) but most any color or size you might be interested in can be found there.

Donn Paris Yea I’ve definitely considered glass butes. It’s a considerable distance from me . I live in Maryland. Thanks for the suggestion

@@Flintknappingsupplies You THINK from Mexico? You don't remember? First of all, Mexico isn't out West. You're being deceptive. Kind of a strange thing for someone who quotes by verse a Christian text in the opening of this video.

So do you sell this material? In one of your comments below you said you mostly just spall material and don't do much finish work.
