Always remember reading in an interview, how Gary was a little shy and embarrassed to sing his songs in front of the band. He wrote them, Tony Hadley sang them. This version is one we are privileged to hear, as are all played on an acoustic guitar. Because that is how Spandau Ballet heard them first.

True was a UK Number 1 single for four weeks in April/May 1983. It also reached Number 1 in Ireland and Canada and became Spandau Ballet's only major US hit single, peaking at Number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

He never shared the windfall from the songs he wrote but Hadley and the band made it a song. Sadly this is so TRUELY only great because of the production and the input from Hadley primarily and the combined rhythm and even the Sax solo made it a hit. Can you honestly say this would even had airplay in this form...No!
@dustystewart4302 жыл бұрын
Wow! This is great! I really enjoyed listening to Gary Kemp performing his own version of this 80’s classic. I wouldn’t ever demean Tony Hadley’s lead vocal on the original version, as he definitely had that silky-smooth “crooner” thing going on; and there’s no doubt that his vocal certainly played a part in the ultimate success of “True”… But in THIS version, Gary’s voice and performance brings so much more of a “blue-eyed soul” vibe to it than Hadley’s vocal did in the original; and for me, it puts the song in a whole new light. After hearing this version, I can’t help but wonder if Gary, when he was writing the song, perhaps heard the vocal as being more this way, with more of this soulful kind of vibe, than how Hadley ultimately ended up singing on the hit version that people are now most familiar with… Thanks for posting this, I really enjoyed it! 🙏
@quitolemutt1062 Жыл бұрын
But Hadley did not just sing ON the HIT version..It BECAME a HIT BECAUSE of the way he sang it and the band played it!!!. These initial comments are what family and friends and not what realistic honest critiques are. Sheesh...be real folks.
@j.schermer35236 ай бұрын
It was probably ment to be sung in the way Hadley sang it. Why? Because Hadley had nothing to say about the way he’d sing the songs. Kemp determined everything.
