The firsthand problem is how to ascertain which words are llana, aguda, etc. before looking at the endings of the words and then decide whether to put tilde. I have no idea but to listen and read as much as one could to familiarise oneself with the correct usage. Maybe it is more urgent to learn to put tilde on important grammatical places (past tense III singular, pronombres, etc. instead of every single nonessential word)

Great point! These rules are useful for two things: 1- If you see Spanish words in writing, you will know how to read them (for example, if you see the word "árbol" you'll know the accent will be in the first syllable and if you see the word "farol" you'll know the accent will be in the last syllable). 2- If you already know the word and which syllable is accentuated, you will know how to write it.
