I agree. The more languages we learn, the easier the next language become. I am now at my 11th languages. I also found language learning an enjoyable thing to do. Actually learning language is to me not just to learn how to communicate, but rather it trains up my intellectual cognitive ability. Also, as I am learning foreign languages, I feel as if I am taking a tour! Visiting a country of where I don't speak the language makes me feel like I have not really immersed in the place.

I am always amazed how people perceive languages...some say you cant learn more than 3 languages in total, despise the fact that medieval scholars usually spoke 4 languages fluently (native, latin, greek and depending on living area french, german or english additional) that diplomats and ofc translators all around the world usually speak at LEAST 4 different languages and some schools teach up to 5 different languages (austrian gymnasium teaches german, latin,, greek, english, french and spanis

Do to our the political situation under (partial?) danish rule, faroese people speak fluent danish by default and english as well as faroese. Quite a few also learn german for up to 6 years in elementary school and high school. I believe that being multilingual has its benefits both in communication and understanding different cultures. Faroeans can easily understand and (at least pretend to) speak Norwegian, Swedish and to some extent Icelandic, which is quite unique compared to how the other nordic speakers understand each other.

@@ProfASAr To be blunt, not terribly well. I didn't find the Berlitz books to be particularly helpful. I think they were a very small piece of the puzzle. I found your suggestion to do something in the language every day to be much more helpful. That was a game changer for me.

IMHO here’s my recommended path in that case: Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and then German. Portuguese has an 89% lexical similarity with Spanish, 75% with French, and about 80% with Italian. Portuguese phonology has many nasal sounds like French does (Spanish and Italian don’t). Source: language nerd who knows French, Spanish, some Italian, a bit of Portuguese, and took two years of Russian as an undergrad.

Arquelles Sensei, in this video you talk about keeping Spanish and Italian separated (by French in this case) in order not to get them muddled. Currently I am learning Japanese. I am now at the intermediate level. Years ago my Spanish and French were at the advanced level. Recently however, when I speak them, Japanese bleeds into my conversation. So my question is, how do you keep multiple languages separated whilst speaking?

@kiurbarra I have been investigating this issue quite a lot, and at a minimum you also have a strong French influence upon English as to spelling and to a lesser extent upon pronunciation. You also have wholesale adoption of some French prefixes and suffixes such as 're' and 'able' paired with countless Germanic roots. You also have hybrid words.

I am certainly interested in using your suggested method for studying these languages. Very sound advice, indeed. However, I would like to ask, is it possible, or rather, is it appropriate to begin this challenge while you are already learning another language? I'm studying Japanese, at the moment, so would it be wise to study the first language of this set while continuing Japanese? Or is it best to wait until I've attained a decent proficiency first?

This is because English had a very strong French influence, although being Germanic. VERY strong. As an example, I'll list some words in English, then French and then German so you can compare and contrast: paper, papier, Papier possible, possible, möglich replaceable, remplaçable, austauschbare ferment, fermenter, Gärung What Im trying to get at is that English sounds French, but is structured like German, the very broad scope of things.

I am not content with my current knowledge of German and French and have been looking at the new Teach Yourself Quick Fix (language) Grammar series. They actually seem pretty useful to the "grammatical index" -oriented learner and to pack more punch than some (if not most) of the "renovated" post-2000 versions of TY language books. For those who at least know the pronunciation, Teach Yourself Spanish Verbs also workably surpasses the current norm w/ its goodies, verb grammar +idiomatic examples.

I think English wasn't mentioned because he was speaking in English to a largely English forum, and so the statement that these four languages were the most commonly used was meant in addition to English. In regards to your suggestion, German is still spoken by many peopel in business and most other sectors, but particularily finance. Italian, perhaps, is not as crucial, but is certainly more different to Spanish than Portuguese, so is not as mutually intelligible.

I am trying to choose *very careful* the material, so in the future, after studying the German language, I can start acquire the others in a systematic fashion. German, were you able to locate the materials? I saw some vintage sets of Linguaphone on eBay, but many were incomplete, and I'm not sure if the sets from the 80s or even the 70s are too new? I would be interested in knowing exactly what year the content diverged, so I don't buy the wrong ones. The newer Made Simple series are different across languages. I will likely go ahead and do the challenge without buying any new materials, except for French, as I have purchased many German, Spanish, and Italian books and audio already. I did, however, like the idea of studying these parallel tracks, and agree with Dr. Arguelles that using similar content across languages would accelerate the learning process.

@johnspeech Finnish is a Finno-Ugric language and not related to the Indo-European languages or the Slavic ones. That being said, Finnish does contain a lot of loan words, mostly Swedish and some Russian ones, for historic reasons. Finland (geographically) was a part of Sweden from ca 1200 to the 1809 and annexed by Russia for the next 108 years. The Russian loan words are mostly used informally and especially among the youth of the capital.

Yup!! There's a good reason for this. English is a creole- the love child of Anglo-Saxon and Norman French. Our day to day words largely come from German. T/D T/S G/Y V/B (giVe/geBen, LiVe/Leben) broT (breaD) TaG (DaY) eSSen (eaT) Trinken (Drink), but the more formal the language the more french it starts to sound. The German heritage words in our language are very different from their cousins today.

It was really inspiring, I read it through for fun, but I already knew German. Thus, I was not in a position to test its efficacy. She used it, then went to Lausanne to study French, then got a Swiss accent on her German (slightly), so I do not know how much of her proficiency in German was due to the book and how much was due to the visit in Lausanne.

Oye, este, solo me habia quedado la duda, (que en tanto de la manera que expresaste en ese video) del estudiar en forma del juxtopostion. One would think that such a rigid enforcment of the parallels is the antipode de étudier les petit différence k les distingue comme autre langue. tout a fait, Relatively,.. they are "同文". 可是 task orianted-ness of En-De, is not the same as the Sp-It"processed bassed" or Fr "attribute" bassed. ou c k vx n'dit pas d ça même façon? (synthétique, pour dire)

a scholar just published a thesis (forgot his name) and which he showed that there was Latin and Old Italian in 200 AD and that Latin was already becoming obsolete. His great finding is that Old Italian gave us French and Italian, not Latin (should find his name). Anyway it was a great read

Interesting, I heard that Italian is not the closest language to classical Latin. That prize goes to Romanian. Spanish French and Italian are from the less formal Latin, so there are definite similarities. Portuguese and Spanish are really really close, (it's very easy to read one if you know the other).

I do understand that it can be frustrating, but I think that he is aiming this at students with a high level of familiarity with linguistic terminology, so don't worry about it too much. Language learning is such a personal development anyway. :) I don't know why so many people have thums-downed you. Maybe you came across a bit demanding? Anyway, good luck!

To me, Japanese, many European languages seem to be very close, even if they were romance or germanic. I am now learning Spanish, and I feel it so strong. When I started to learn English, every single word was new to me! Apart from words, I believe Asian ppl will never be able to acquire a proper usage of definete/indefinite articles.

@cmmndrblu English is not a Creole. The transmission of the language was never broken. A loss of inflection and lots of loan words does not a creole make. Why do you think English preserves the strong verbs? Nor does English come from German! (I presume you mean High German.)

@@uamdbro I have been keeping up with German and have started Spanish not too long ago. thanks for asking. I did take a break for a couple of years from German, but have since been consistent. I did not know it would take me over 10 years to be semi-proficient in another language, but I would recommend everyone to start learning.
