A decade-plus on, this is still my absolute favorite version of this song, and a piece of music that features in most of my playlists, because it's a masterclass. These are just two musicians who knew what the fuck they were doing, out there making sounds that no one else has before or since. I've memorized the would-be-sung harmony for the female part and can play the fiddle. One day I'll find a male singer smooth enough and knowing enough and gentle enough to be worthy of the piece. But I hope both of you are as proud as you can be of this song, it's an extraordinary achievement. And for what it's worth, people are still eagerly listening.

According to Smithsonian Magazine, the music is by an Arizona cowboy named Bill Simon (words by Charles "Badger" Clark). In any case, this is one of my favorite versions of this lovely song.

That my be as I have never heard the Daniels version, but it is the same as Tyson did in the early 1960's when he was part of Ian and Sylvia. Very good version, that.

Charlie Daniels is not the person who should get credit for this tune. At least one member of the Weavers was performing this back in the late 50's - early 60s.

Ian Tyson recorded this song about 1963, before Dylan did it. Charlie Daniels? I doubt it. Daniels was writing about that time but the song dates to the early 1900's.

This is a lovely song. But the melody was most definitely NOT written by Charlie Daniels, since my mother (who taught me first to listen and then to sing) learned it in the 1940s. Unless Charlie was a composing prodigy - and maybe as a PLAYER he was -, he would have been about 5 years old when she was taught it. . . . The poem is by Charles Badger Clark, Jr. and dates from 1915. All the sung versions I have heard alter the last stanza which in the original opens: Never seen her since that night-- I can't cross the Line, you know. She was "Mex" and I was white; Like as not it's better so. Though plainly it has always been the lament of a cowboy for his lost Mexican lover, none of the sung versions that I know (including my mom's) ever include the implied reference to racism. If I recall correctly, hers went: Haven't seen her since that night, I can't cross the Line you know. Wanted in a gambling fight, Still, perhaps it's better so. Apparently 1915 was a little truer and braver.

The words to this are from a Badger Clark poem, first published in Sun and Saddle Leather in about 1907. You should go back and learn this the way the words were written. The melody you are singing is one of several I have heard this sung to. This one was added by Billy Simon. I have never heard this melody attributed to Charlie Daniels but he probably recorded it. There are more verses. They make the song make better sense. You do a nice job but it would be better sung correctly.

What The Heck...Charlie Daniels borrowed this melody... he had NOTHING to do with the arrangement as this artist suggested...It was written by Charles Badger Clark in 1907 and set to music in 1925 by Billy Simon. I'm a Music Historian and had to jump in and correct doc's errant intro.
