Ser is NOT permanent and estar is NOT temporary! Chicago está en IL. Use estar for location, even though Chicago will ALWAYS in IL.

Because "ser" came from a Latin word that means "to sit," I think of the uses of "ser" as what means something sits somewhere. "Estar" came from a Latin word that means "to stand," so the uses of that verb have to do with standing.

You are wrong. "Ser" comes from the latin verb "Esse" = To be Spanish - Soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son Latin - Sum, es, est, summus, estis, sunt. Estar comes from the latin verb "stare" = Stay (notice the latin root of the english verb "stay". It also comes from this latin verb, stare, and its meaning is the same). Spanish - Estoy, estas, está, estamos, estáis, están Latin - Sto, stas, stat, stamus, stātis, stant. If you think in the differences between the verb "to be" and the verb "to stay", you can aproximate yourself to the differences between "ser" and "estar" (however, "stay" is for a permanent situation, "estar" is for much less permanent situations). You can translate the sencence "I will stay here till you come" as "(Yo) estaré aquí hasta que llegues" greetings from a native Spanish speaker from Spain.

Context. Otherwise ask for the pronoun by saying "disculpa, ¿nos hablas a nosotros o hablas de ellos?" (excuse me, are you talking to us or are you talking about them?). Hope that helps
