Spanish mackerel fishing in North Carolina. In this video you can see how to catch spanish mackerel on casted metal jigs. On your level winds, put a couple of swivels in-line that you can rig your planer on with snap swivels, have to cut the snap part off so it hangs in the in-line swivels, when you reel up to the planer, pop it off the line and drop it on the floor and reel all the way up to the spoon...much much better on the user than dealing with the long leader. We do the same thing offshore using a bridle for wahoo etc...

Big Nick Spanish candies were used this day I think but generally any metal jigs will work. The candies just have a little more flash

The white rod is the one everyone always asks about. It's a 7' med fast st Croix legend extreme. Paired with Shimano stradic with 10lb Powerpro braid. By the end of this trip the drag washers had completely discentegrated. I replaced them with carbon fiber washers but tackle of that size is definitely not meant for albies that size. Went out expecting fish around 1/6th that size.

I have a BayRider 2060. Great skiff style boat that can go super skinny. Its definitely not the best for running in any kind of chop but I mostly bought it because I wanted something thats good for taking the wife and kids out in but that I can also fish out of.

Looks like a great day! What size was that Yozuri diver you were pulling? Smallest size (3.5") or next size up 4 3/8?

@davidmurphy9671 smallest size usually, but I have done well in April on 5-6lb Spanish with the larger ones.

Thanks man. I'm down in Ocean Isle and I'm with you on the planers with Clark spoons being a pain. I hadn't thought about using smaller deep divers but I'll give it a shot. Much easier and more fun than dealing with planers.

We see the Spanish in all sorts of water from muddy to crystal clear. I usually target them right outside the inlet. This trip we were never more than a mile from New River inlet. The really big Spanish should show up any day now with the Bonito.

@@FishingwithBrewski thanks for the reply and intel. I’d like to try outside our inlet on the west coast but we’ve had some red tide. Any advice? We have crab pods located to around 7 miles. Does it make sense they would be near those? Do you catch big kings around Spanish mackerel? I hear they feed on them.

I've pulled lures slower and watched the fish follow the lure an inch or two away from it, but not bite all the way to the boat...kinda funny to watch them thinking something just ain't quite right. Faster doesn't give them as much time to think! lol

New River. Although the bite has been really hot everywhere. Make sure to watch out for days where you have wind against tide as the inlet will stand up on you pretty bad. This day was less than. 1ft swell.

I've tried the planners...not a big fan...just not as much fun pulling that plow to me...but I do use an inline weight to get the spoon down a little...also just letting it all sink while the boat is moving just a little, then trolling at speed which pulls the spoon back up near the surface. I also use a short 3" wire BEHIND the inline weight, because the Spanish will hit the weights, too...the wire keeps the mono leader from being cut.

I hate the planer as well but sometimes it's the only thing that gets hit. I generally just run the yozuri deep diver more than anything

@@FishingwithBrewski As pretty as Spanish are, it's not my favorite cooked as an entree. I'll smoke them and make a big batch of fish dip...enough to give away and freeze some. :) Enjoyed your video...makes me want to get out there, soon!
