Another wonderful talk -- it flew by in moments. My worst experience: standing in line for a funicular in either Switzerland or Austria a man jumped the queue, was talking to the ticket vendor. His wife, fifty feet behind, was hollering "Harry! Tell him you're an American. Tell him you're an _American_ !" As you gestured in this podcast, we hung our heads in shame as did, I'm sure, any other Americans in the line. Best regards.

Great video. I've traveled with my family and for work all over the world. Doesn't matter where you go, there are simple rules that if you follow you generally won't have any problems. You touch on most of these: 1) Don't be a jerk. You just make an idiot of yourself; 2) Be the guest that you are. Never act disrespectfully. Be polite, say yes sir and yes ma'am. That said, if you fell you are being mistreated, take it politely to a supervisor. Be humble; 3) Never talk on your phone or take pictures at official buildings. Ever; 4) Try to learn a little of the local language. Learn to say hello, thank you, and things like, "I need to check in", "where is (customs, immigration, etc. - all the official offices), apologize for not knowing the language. As for tipping, bing an American, anyone who would tip for geting directions is likely just showing off their wealth, the worst kind of traveller.

oh my, such good tips. Great advice to read up on local customs before you arrive . I can attest that rude , drinking, half undressed , reckless driving, spend-little tourists of obnoxious behavior can be found in holiday beach towns in America, France and Spain as well ( some headline incidents come mind in Benidorm and Mallorca).

As a youth I was given four bits of advice on receipt of my first passport, they have stood me in good stead for a lifetime of both professional and recreational travel that has led me to have had the pleasure of experiencing many of the places and cultures of this amazing planet. 1, When in Rome, do as the Romans. ie, observe local customs and mores. 2, When abroad you are in the position of acting as an ambassador for your country, act accordingly. 3, When abroad do not assume that UK law applies, it is unusually forgiving compared to many other countries so be very, very, cautious. 4, Respect both religion and authority, however pointless it seems to you. The result of following these principles has been that I now have firm friends all over the world and they have allowed me into their homes and their lives, giving me the gift of some absolutely wonderful experiences that most tourists will never have. Not so strangely, the places I’ve had the worst reception have recently experienced British sports fans. Thanks for putting this piece together, it’s a subject matter that imho doesn’t get nearly enough attention. Cheers, R.

Rob, there is more to consider.....SECOND POINT TO CONSIDER -- Every "requirement" you mentioned, are religious based rules - they have their origins in Islam. SO please tell me which Religious Rules from Christianity in the UK that you wish Muslims to adhere to? Do you feel comfortable in posting a video telling Muslims which they must adhere to? For instance, our Christian belief is that women do not need to hide their faces - shall we tell Muslims in the UK and US, that they shall remove their face obstructions when going through immigration? Both the US and UK have now permitted them to retain these obstructions. I really do believe that you should think this issue out a bit as there is far more going on than simply customs and "when in Rome" stuff. As always, love you guys and your channel.

Or the millions illegally entering the US? Common guys. Why are you speaking like this. Why not say that Muslim countries should NOT try to reinforce Islamic dress codes on Christians visiting their country??

Michael, or Colleen, whichever your name is remains unclear but in full disclosure I have had a swift look at your channel and judging from your saved videos you speak from an unusually right wing, American, perspective that seems to contain elements of religious xenophobia. On that basis I doubt we’ll be friends any time soon. I cannot pretend any knowledge of the requirements for visiting Muslims vis-a-vis the USA’s immigration or passport control, so I won’t comment on that topic. As far as the UK’s immigration and passport control requirements are concerned you have grossly misrepresented the facts. In this case, the duty for officers to positively identify all individuals entering the country is of course required and there are no exceptions. Where an individual wears an Hijab for religious or cultural reasons, such as it being unacceptable for a male not their husband or direct family to see their face, they are free to request an identification to be carried out by a female officer in a private room provided for that purpose, which perfectly simply satisfies both their own religious restrictions and the requirements of UK immigration law. It’s really no big deal. As far as your statement about the UK being a “Christian society” goes, you are again grossly misrepresenting the facts. In the UK the basis of our society is strongly secular and we try to ensure that we maintain a healthy separation of religion and State. For instance, I am an Agnostic but nevertheless I respect the right of others to believe in whatever deity or religious belief system they may find comfort in, nor do I think either more or less of them for doing so. More to the point, I will strongly defend their rights in that respect. Finally, regarding your attempt to conflate the subjects of tourism and illegal immigration I will say only that the laws of the land apply and I am content that they do. As I stated in my OP, the advice I was given has led me to have had the pleasure of making many firm friends around the world, from all religions and social strata, who have given me opportunities to see, experience and gain understanding of a great deal that many visitors are denied. That has given me great pleasure throughout my half a century of travel, for which I am eternally grateful. Of course, to coin a phrase, your mileage may vary. Have a nice day, it’s an amazing world out there, please don’t wreck it through narrow-minded attitudes and religious hatred, that’s a road to ruin for all of humanity.

Hey Rob. Thanks for that post. What excellent advice you were given, which are sure to hold you in good stead when visiting different countries and cultures. If only more people followed these simple 'rules' when traveling. Some people don't consider that, despite humanity's similarities, there are differences too, and these should be respected whether you agree with them or not.

Another great episode! I could listen to your voices all day. As a suggestion, I find that it looks better when you are sitting across from each other at the table in the cockpit. The extra space and separation between you lifts a type of psychological pressure that is presented when you are squished up right next to each other. Hard to put my finger on it exactly, but it comes across as easier to watch. Plus the water in the background is not as noticeable when you are at the table. Less distracting and less dizzy feeling.

I love the "local" customs and cultures and their differences. I visited Kenya 35 years ago and we were told to not photograph any government buildings, flags, or personnel. One day, we left our camp to go to a local lodge for a day at the pool. Whilst chatting around the pool, one woman from our group tried to get a photo of a few from our trip sitting at a table. She didn't see the dozen military guys in the background who immediately locked and loaded their AK47's and started yelling at us. We got lucky several times on that photo safari for 3 weeks.

Hiya, great chat about very real issues, funnily enough I was speaking about some of the very same things while chatting around the pool here in Bali where I’m having a Holliday right now. I always hire a scooter, but I have a motorcycle license and an international driver permit. A great shame that the actions of a few wreck so many things for the rest of us. Not respecting customs and traditions in these beautiful spiritual lands is a crime and Bali doesn’t mind laying down the law and I don’t blame them. It’s high time.

Excellent podcast, thanks and well done! Regarding pointing: a diplomat once told me about a western gentleman in conversation with an Afghan local chieftain. Just as a natural (to him) part of gesturing while speaking, this western fellow pointed in passing at the chieftain. Who fixed him with a granite gaze and said, point that finger at me again and I will cut it off. Meant it, too… So, good to learn that pointing with the thumb is a safe alternative 😏

Great episode! I have lived in SE Asia for many years. As for pointing with one's finger, what I have used successfully is a raised open hand pointing and moving my hand in a direction as if I were about to do a handshake. So far my SE Asian wife has not complained of this motion as being rude. I do try not to aim my fingers directly at another person, if possible. Pointing a finger can be misconstrued as an invitation to fight, Lol. I use this motion only when necessary and so far, no complaints. Another tip, dress well when in town, and if wearing sandals, trim toenails. Women often judge each other in this culture based on if their husbands/boyfriends are presentable. Hope this helps your viewers.

One more tip if using the "handshake finger point technique" keep your hand close to your body. do not extend your arm fully. I often bring my other open hand underneath with an open palm.

I think people confuse the right to safe harbour with a right to access to a country. No-one has a right to access any country! Access is a privilege, and the granting of that privilege is being judged by the border official. If they deem you to be disrespectful of their officialdom, the chances are you'll be disrespectful of their laws and customs! So access will be denied! I had an interesting cultural clash with a storeowner in Greece once upon a time. We Brits have a habit, when a store assistant enquires if they can help, of saying, "Oh, I'm just looking". In our minds, we're still browsing the merchandise with a potential interest to purchase. However, they hear, "Oh, I'm just using your store like a museum and admiring your merchandise as a free display"! It must be said, that the store owner's reaction was way over the top, almost as if we'd threatened one of his staff! He wasn't listening as I tried to explain that we have the cash to buy but hadn't yet decided what of their fabulous collection of objet d'art we desired to buy! He chased us out of the store like common criminals!! But I absolutely agree that too many westerners treat foreign destinations with outright disrespect and make a disgraceful display of themselves and our collective nations.

Recently, a couple of boats traveled in the Red Sea and transited the Suez Canal. Both of these boats have YT channels. They published videos of disparagment of the governments and authorities in several countries they visited. I think this is unwise and rather rude, disrespectful, and entitled. I venture to believe the social media exposure will not make things better for the next boats through that area, especially boats from these countries. Secondly, women parading around in bathing suits so skimpy tonsils are but visible. Modesty is lost on them. Thank goodness, YT had demonitized some of their videos. OnlyFans is their recourse. 🤦‍♂️I fit in the category of respect for others culture, dress and conduct yourself appropriately for the environment. Show respect. Thanks for sharing. I have seen issues with boat yards here (US) too. I was working out of state, and was traveling to work on Monday and returning home on Friday, at one point. I thought it would be cheaper and more convenient if I brought my boat down to live near the office, so I checked the local marinas. The largest marina had about 10 live aboards, and the manager said they weren't letting any new ones in. I asked why, and she said, "Because you people are pains in the a**." I rented a room in a house instead. I like the term "stupid money." I can't help wondering if people pay "stupid money" because they can't do the conversion to their home currency in their heads.

The trousers story was funny. I have been through a similar experience 🙂. We need tourists to be more aware and respectful to local laws and behavior rules. We must remember that as tourists we are guests of sorts so let's put up a good impression. Nowadays we sometimes see people trying to pass through airport security in tiny bikinis. That usually does not end well.

I had a large family vacation with everyone on my father's side up to my grandmother a few years back. Now my close family is relatively good, but my cousins and aunts/uncles are a different story. Usually sums up to them being rowdy rural country peeps in cultural or religious sites. Hard to watch happen and even harder to get them to stop without being disrespectful myself.

Mexico is going through the same type of thing with overstays and using tourist visas and living in the country. It used to be automatic that you would get 180 days for your visa. Now, it's not uncommon for people to get a much shorter visa. Often only days longer than your scheduled stay.

Tipping experience in Grenada. First time in Grenada and no map and no clue where everything was. We met "Jimmy" (He pronounced it "Jee-mee") on The Carenage and asked for directions to the spice market. We got talking and he said that he could take us there. He would tell us when the vendors were trying to get too much and would talk them to giving us "local" prices, He took us up the hill to the basketball upright with .50 caliber gun shot holes (where the rebels killed the government officials). He took us to look at the neighborhoods where most Grenadians lived, and explained about brick homes vs. wood homes (if a home is wooden, the *LAND* is rented and the occupants own the house. When they move, they disassemble their house and move it, along with all of their other belongings) He took us to a classroom where I did my best to teach them where I lived, and trying to explain how we had snow. I think I lost the class when I told them about strapping skis on, and sliding down the side of a mountain... for *FUN* ! After all of that, "Jimmy" treated us to a sugar apple (nectar from heaven, I swear) and started to walk off, I stopped him and gave him a $20 bill. Some _mild_ protestations, but I explained that I would have had to pay, likely 3 times that much for a _traditional_ tour and at least 2 times the prices that we paid at the market. I also explained how nice it was to hear about Grenada from a young man who, we could tell, loved it and was proud of it, We all left feeling good, I hope and believe.

We've been in similar situations and have learned that if they refuse the money, they're often not just being polite but genuinely just wanted to spend time with us. Offering money can be offensive so it's up to us to make the call on whether it's appropriate or not. Sounds like you got a lifetime experience for your $20 though!

I had to fly to S Korea for business during Covid. I did everything right- registered on line- got my health clearance before departure- upon landing I was told that my second shot was “too old” - no discussion- either pay to be in Quarantine or go back- spent 48 hours in transit and ended up where I started- getting angry would have done nothing but put me in trouble

I think that I can relate. I watch people from urban areas move to a rural area and self destruct. Without a police officer on ever corner they will injure or kill themselves and others because they have never developed internal controls. Then they demand more protection at the expense of the whole community that have gotten along just fine for almost two hundred years.

Ah, yes, mad, bad behavior. These are doubtless the same people that behave poorly in their home countries as well; ask any bank teller, cashier, wait staff, hotel concierge, cab driver, etc., just how entitled, narcissistic, ego-inflated, self important and childish people can be, and it's getting worse. Things are getting worse here in the West, across the board on any subject you care to discuss and there seems to be a similar uptick in people experiencing a state of profound disconnect with reality...almost as if they believe nobody truly exists but THEM and everyone else is simply a computer generated character programmed to serve their needs. When things do not go precisely the way they wish you see displays not in keeping with a sane adult. And I don't think it is a trick of my perception, but these people are more numerous than they were a few years ago, so it's no surprise that many of them travel and muddy the water for the grown-ups. Well, I see no solution to them that the world will not serve up in it's own time: suffering will wake them up. As the world they inhabit turns darker, and it will, they will receive hard lessons in humility. All anyone in your position can do is demonstrate that behaving like a feral toddler is not universal and keep your heads down when things get really interesting. I am in the market for a pocket cruiser to take me to far places, and I promise to behave like a gentleman. Perhaps I'll have you both over to my boat for a beer one of these days. Safe travels.

Sage advice. It is a two lane road though. If tourists in Bali have to behave properly(as they should), the locals also have to behave properly. Don't grab my suitcase at the airport and demand money because you "found it for me" and then try to take it outside to your taxi, so that I have to run after you. Don't take me to "the better" restaurant on a day trip where you get a cash in the hand payment for bringing tourists there. Don't force(?) our driver to stop at a group of 1/2 a dozen men, so that I have to pay a cash payment in order to continue driving on a public road to a tourist spot. Don't aggressively harass my wife and I CONSTANTLY throughout the day wherever we go to buy your trinkets or enter your establishment. Don't make up imaginary currency exchange rates based on whether my hundred dollar bills have a wrinkle in them or not. We met some lovely people during our vacation in Bali. However, I cut short that 2 week visit by 6 days to fly back home, based on being treated like a wallet and having to deal with obvious scams by the hotels, retail stores and tour guides.

That's what happens in busy tourist and heavily-populated spots all over the world! I'm from London and have seen so many ways that tourists are ripped-off. These places attract the dregs. As a local, tourists can be annoying, so my suggestion is to go in with a big smile and stay firm when declining offers of help. Be mindful of local customs, show respect, dress conservatively and learn a few words of the language. Get away from the worst places (airports, tourist trinket shops, taxis). We arrange for pick-up at airports to avoid the taxi-driver-hassle, hire mopeds/cars or a driver for the day if it's possible, and NEVER go in souvenir shops. @@followtheboat My wife and I always dress well. Actually, we got picked out of the line at LAX and upgraded to business class to Bali, which was lovely. We did have pick up arranged with our hotel. I just had to chase the "helpful" taxi guy to get our bags back! As far as souvenirs go, we ended up seeing the same silver pieces at the airport on the way out, for 1/2 of the "best price" that the village silver shop would give us on our day tour with a private driver. We also bought a beautiful Balinese wooden relief carving online, once we got back to L.A for 40% less than the best price offered us in a village shop. Our best practice is to get away from touristy areas and go to villages etc, when we travel. Bali is one of those places where I honestly think you're better off just staying in a beautiful resort for a week and then leaving. It's not how we travel, so we have never returned.

Covid was a big pause in tourism for Bali, allowed them to realise they can survive without income from riffraff. Compared to us tourists who aren't used to the tropical heat, the locals often appear over-dressed! Often it's to hide from the sun but they're acclimatised to it. Many men wear jeans 😮

Bali has had enough, but our mayor is a knee-jerk policy maker. But like you said, Bali is not that small, many good spots way more than the 2-3 area "to avoid". Officially, helmets is required for driver AND passenger in Indonesia. Pretty sure you know that marine fuel are more expensive than "land" fuel in Indonesia. I mean official price from the government.

With helmet both driver/rider and passenger required to wear helmet, when with seatbelt it's just required to driver and front passenger, and they didn't even require kids to used baby/children car seat and/or booster seat here. WOW, I would have thought getting naked on a less inhabitant mountain top is harmless as well. Even our culture made nakedness shameful in ways as well. The Bible our country assimilated to even states God of the Most High" asked who told you that you are naked? These were anecdotes only so it wouldn't be fair to shine the light on one specific country when there are stories of misbehaviour coming from all over the world. It shouldn't matter where you are from or which country you are visiting when you are respecting local codes of etiquette.

I may have told this story before but Egypt was the first country we sailed to after Turkey and I was full of preconceived ideas about it, all based on sailors who had travelled up the Red Sea. They were all wrong. We loved Egypt and the Egyptians and from that moment on I swore never to judge a place until I'd been there myself. On a separate note, someone said in these comments that you get what you give, so behave like a wanker and you'll be treated like one, so the likelihood of negative shit happening to you increases. I think our positive attitude to new experiences helps carry us through certain situations. We don't look for trouble so we rarely find it.

American here. We have a tipping culture here because businesses got smart. They figured out that it's easier to have customers pay their workers salary or at least the bulk of their salary. So this creates an environment where we HAVE to pay tips otherwise the worker won't have a living wage. Because tips are expected there is poorer service quality across the board. We Americans don't like paying tips for things other than exemplary service and being responsible for someone else's salary.

It's a shame it's got like that. We tip restaurant service in the UK but it's 10% tops, and only if you feel you got the service. Unfortunately with cashless payments the tips are often included in the bill as a service charge and you have to wonder how much of that the staff actually sees.

..SECOND POINT TO CONSIDER -- Every "requirement" you mentioned, are religious based rules - they have their origins in Islam. SO please tell me which Religious Rules from Christianity in the UK that you wish Muslims to adhere to? Do you feel comfortable in posting a video telling Muslims which they must adhere to? For instance, our Christian belief is that women do not need to hide their faces - shall we tell Muslims in the UK and US, that they shall remove their face obstructions when going through immigration? Both the US and UK have now permitted them to retain these obstructions. I really do believe that you should think this issue out a bit as there is far more going on than simply customs and "when in Rome" stuff. As always, love you guys and your channel.

My point is that, by far by far, they do not respect our "customs" or traditions and demand we bend to theirs when they come to our country (and yours). Your arguement would suggest we'd be attending mosque on Fridays, Liz would be wearing a hijab, westerners would be prevented from eating pork and drinking alcohol and we'd be studying Arabic. We are allowed to pursue many aspects of our western cultures in Indonesia and it is tolerated, in much the same way we tolerate different cultures in the UK.

@@followtheboat ..correct in part and incorrect in part. Yes, some rules/laws can be simple customs. However, the ones you cite deal with Islamic based decrees reflecting modesty. Particularly modesty of women. That is, as you no doubt know, the reason why you were asked to were long pants to something as simple as an immigration check. You wore normal attire worn in all countries that are warm/hot. Now contrast that to the Muslim woman in Australia who refused to show her face when stopped by police and in which when it went to court argued that "how do you know it was me since you never saw my face".. and it was "accepted by the court as a form of accommodation". If we can accept to that absurd extent their custom, then, yes, you should be able to wear shorts and a shirt with a collar to immigration without being discriminated against. Remember, they challenge every aspect of our customs, rules and laws that differ to any extent from theirs, when in our country - they simply do. The fact that you are defending this, as British man, who is well aware of the stunning and awesome history of good that British culture has brought to the world (name a country that hasn't been positively benefited by it), is stunning to me.

Oh and I think you would love Bali, much is wrecked by tourism and development but the heart is still here, since you love India you may see a synergy in that its Hindu and the people the earth and scents and feel of the place, its magic. If you do wish to stay a little while please let me recommend @ramabeachresort and villas a sanctuary away from chaos, I may be able to tee you up with a great rate too. Then tack a trip to mount Kintamani and so much more, like India its many places in one with a rich history and so so much to see. I’m here for another 12 days.

Don't believe everything you read about the behaviour in Bali. Over the years I've seen Western behaviour markedly IMPROVE, whilst the locals (by their own standards) has deteriorated.. When your own taxi driver barges into the ATM to try to steal your money, things have gone south. (anecdote only).. My wife is from Kalimantan, and we have both noticed. (she even pretends to be from elsewhere to avoid incredibly rude questioning). Learnt; twisting somebody's ear in a confined space will get you what you want very very smartly. (Bluebird taxi driver, for those who swear by them).
