A simple and short video on how I changed out the spark pluds on my 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser.
/ thirteensmilespergallon
Camera equipment used in this video:
DJI Pocket 2: amzn.to/2KZH5XG
GoPro HERO9 Black: amzn.to/3rS8sDI
DJI Mavic Air 2 Drone Fly More Combo: amzn.to/3hJt1h6
Rode VideoMicro Compact Microphone: amzn.to/38avbmD
GoPro Suction Cup Mount: amzn.to/3ndwLbF
The Basics:
Spark plugs are wearable items, changing them out will regain lost power, lower emissions, and most importantly, increase MPG
The Problem:
With any used vehicle, service records are usually incomplete. With my 1999 Land Cruiser approaching 200k miles, I decided to change out the spark plugs.
Affected:
All cars.
Solution:
Change out the old spark plugs.
Repair difficulty: 3/10
Repair time: 1.5 hrs
Tools and parts:
Gloves: amzn.to/38psAmq
Spark plugs: amzn.to/2SwkkeV

I’m about to do the same. Been getting 9 mpgs for quite some time. Intermittent slightly rough idle. Particularly in cold weather. But the other day my check engine light started blinking and the car was misfiring quite badly. Gonna do all 8 today.

Don’t use anti-seize on chrome plated there made it that way so they don’t seize only use anti-seize on black threads 👌

Nicely done... this is on my to-do list as like yours, I am not aware of how long my plugs have been in my truck. On the MUD forums there is some debate on using anti-seize on the plugs as they are supposed to be torqued to a specific value and the anti-seize changes that value. Other thing to note, when doing your plugs it is good to replace the coil pack boots as well. Maybe an extra $30ish for the boot kit from Mr. T so good insurance.
@chowcares
@chowcares 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Anti-seize I believe is a must in corrosion prevention. Spark plugs are exposed to extreme heat and then cooled off completely when the car is off. I’m not sure if anti-seize will change the torque value, but even if it did, I wouldn’t think it would be enough to cause any damage to the engine unless you over torque by a significant amount. Which would be due to over torquing and not anti-seize. The boots are a must which I will add to my list!
@mizznfizz1
@mizznfizz1 4 жыл бұрын
@@chowcares Basically what the threads say is that it lowers the true value and causes the plugs to work themselves loose. Eventually this turns into a "tick" that can be mistaken for an exhaust manifold leak but can lead to misfires, coil issues, boot issues, and false codes. Like I said, some debate but FSM does not recommend usage of anti-seize so I won't bother.

mizznfizz1 that’s very interesting. I’ve owned and worked on many different cars and I want to say I always use anti-seize on spark plugs and exhaust bolts. Maybe I’ll do a follow up video after 10k miles or so and see if any of the plugs got significantly loose
@Motokarts
@Motokarts 3 жыл бұрын
I use to use anti-seize until that thread. And normally I would take what I read on the internet with a grain of salt but from denso's website it says, "If a thread lubricant such as grease is coated on the thread, tightening to the recommended torque is tightening too much; this has been linked to seal leakage. Do not use a thread lubricant.". Also, NGK is an oem plug and what came out of my LC and they state," NGK spark plugs feature trivalent plating. This silver or chrome-colored finish on the threads is designed to provide corrosion resistance against moisture and chemicals. The coating also acts as a release agent during spark plug removal. NGK spark plugs are installed at the factory dry, without lubrication or anti-seize. Anti-seize can act as a lubricant, altering torque values up to 20 percent, increasing the risk of spark plug thread breakage and/or metal shell stretch. Thread breakage can sometimes involve removing the cylinder head for repair. Metal shell stretch changes the heat rating of the spark plug and can result in serious engine damage caused by pre-ignition. Do not use anti-seize or lubricant on NGK spark plugs. It is completely unnecessary and can be detrimental." With that said, no more anti-seize for me.

awesome video - thx - I was hesitant due to the access but I'll now take the job on - although, I have done some research and seems like 100 series plugs backing out is an issue - specifically the ones in the middle (not the ends) so planning on using a bit more torque and may forego the anti seize......

A little citrus degreaser aerosol sprayed in the engine bay followed by an agitation and a rinse, finished with an engine bay dressing would do wonders for your video presentations. Plus the dressing is typically anti static so dust and dried mud come off very easy.

I will never leave the air filter's clean side upwards during any repair. Say a small bolt or a rock slid in to one of the valleys and you started the engine.... Apply dielectric grease to all contact points and to the inside of the rubber boot for easy removal next time. Use OEM coil packs. If it is expensive find one from a yard. tundra/sequoia cols work too!

Just did mine, the spark plug boots on the drive side were not fun, most of them were stuck to the plugs, someone before me didn't use dielectric grease. I ordered new coil gaskets and boots. Passenger side came out easy.

You shouldn’t use dielectric grease anyways, as it’s an insulator and you don’t want to mess with the contact between the coil and plug. Instead use lithium grease.

Hey great channel, glad to have found it. I also have a hundy. I am wondering if you have done anything to your throttle body yet, or have had any problems with it yet. As I have heard from other owners and some shops that the throttle body can become clogged causing problems. I am currently having a problem with my cruiser when I activate the a/c now that it is hot. It blows cold air, but the check engine light comes on and the idle becomes rough. Just wanted to maybe pick your brain for what could be causing this, before I go and drop hundreds at the shop to fix. Thanks in advance.
@chowcares
@chowcares 4 жыл бұрын
Luckily I haven’t had any issues with the throttle body yet. Access to the throttle body is easy so if it is clogged you should be able to take it off and clean it pretty easily. Your best bet is to get an obd scanner (auto parts stores loan them out for free) and see what codes the computer is reading.

This has been a hot topic on mud lately. 13 ft lbs is not enough. They WILL work loose and can cause serious problems if not caught in time. Not sure why there hasn't been a TSB put out on this. 16-18ft lbs is the general consensus.
