In 1976 in the UK, when I was aged 8 we were experiencing an amazing summer. I was out playing with friends. A crystal clear, blue sky. We saw a white object high up in the atmosphere and it descended, becoming larger. We all saw it. It was what we now would call a "tic tac". No noise from it, no vapour trail, no wings. I would estimate it descended to about a thousand feet and was clear as anything. The same shape as a tic tac but what has struck me since then are two things in addition to the aforementioned. One: It was perfectly smooth and white, looked like it was made of porcelain, just like the porcelain they make toilets out of with no rivets, bonds or joins. Two: After floating above us for about 20 seconds it shot up with incredible speed. It just zipped out of there like a bullet from a standing start. Incredible. I know what I saw. It was not from this planet for sure.

I believe with all my heart that we are not alone. and the aliens who have been visiting us for 1000 years are local extraterrestrials. who live near us for up to 10 light years. Cant speak for Aliens but Humans treat animals based on there intelligence capability....We elephant, or dolphin, or ape differently then we would an earth worm, cockroach, field mouse ext.....If we found what we would consider a intellecual peer to us that would be a different form of treatment as well. You dont treat your peers the same way you do your dog as an example. You might enjoy both your dog and your coworkers company....but you treat them differently because of there difference in intellect....The biggest two questions would be how capable we identify the aliens to us, and perhaps more importantly, how do they view our intelligence or capability to themselves. Let’s forget about the spacial separation, 5000 light years for example, let’s say the signal was from around 5000 years ago, temporal separation, what are you going to do about it? There isn’t a common “now” so there’s no meaningful communication, and that’s that. The closest star to our solar system is four light years away. A pair of hello takes eight years via Radio communication, which is light speed.

@mhwtzou yes, but as Albert Einstein himself wrote, time is relative to it's observer. So something that is being talked about now is the ability to manipulate space and time. If you could do that, you could travel lightyears in just a few standard minutes.

There are many explanations as to why that is the case, one of them is the so-called Lorentz factor. At light speed, Lorentz factor is infinity. Anything divided by infinity is zero, therefore to a photon the entire universe, space and time altogether, divided by infinity becomes zero, one singular point, meaning there is no longer any space and time. Since space and time cannot be negative, light speed is ultimate and absolute.

@mhwtzou what I was referring to is the idea that you would essentially be in a bubble of time, inside that bubble you would be traveling withing all laws of physics, but by altering space and time on the borders of that bubble you, and that bubble could travel much faster. It is all theoretical now but many physicists are starting to explore it. Michio Kaku is one of the leaders in it, some of his publications might explain it better than I can
