Thanks Pete, please make a lesson only for Buck converters, with formulas, and choosing L, Cout, Diod, and calculating delta V, max and min parameters, what is pulse-skipping mode,simple schems with some dc-dc and so on...its very interesting and popular sort of thigs !

1N400x diodes are crap for SMPS supplies.(generally far too slow) I'd bet that just switching out the diode for something faster,you'd get the efficiency up.

Why don't you do a simple AM radio? I have seen ones that uses a transistor instead of a germanium diod, I think, My google-fu doesn't find it.
