I am going back to night classes, and I am 53 years old. I had to leave school at the 5th grade, and tonight the reading and writing class, I had tonight has assignments, where do we use commas, and I had a problem figuring out where to put commas. When i saw your video I learned more from you, then I did in the 6 weeks I had my classes. I got them all right, because you explained it very well where I can understand what goes where. Thank you for taking the time to do this video. It has really helped me understand what I need to do. God bless your heart.

Thank you for this video. I was really struggling with using punctuations a few weeks ago and i began to read my high school English books and it really helped me improve my use of punctuations. This video is also helpful and very informative. Right now, I'm working on improving my use of semicolons and colons along with the other punctuations like em and en dashes. There's one thing that you haven't really covered with the use of commas but similar to addressing someone. It's calling out with their name. Example would be: John, where are you?..A few weeks ago I was also struggling to place certain punctuations on sentences. One example is: Hey, thanks for the donuts, pal. I didn't know at first that there should be a comma before the word pal but then I realized that I need to. Thanks again for your videos. I'll be watching your other videos as well.

Very good video, I will use it in my classroom. I teach oral English in China and I've noticed that most students, although they have learned English and more specifically English grammar, they don't know how to use commas and punctuation marks in general. I also would like to ask you to explain in your future videos, if possible, that we need to add one space after using any punctuation marks. Most Chinese students don't do it when they write in English.

Thank you so much. I learned a lot 💜 But I just want to ask a question right now. Is it right to put a period after a quotation mark? Like for example: I said "I want to go home," then she replied, "I don't care!". She's so rude. So that's the sentence. Is it alright to put a period after the quotation mark or it isn't needed to be there? And one last thing, it is ok to not capitalize the first letter of the quoted text? Like for example "don't cry." or it must be "Don't cry." Please help me for this. I'm a bit confused.
@somersethouse5054
@somersethouse5054 4 жыл бұрын
Hello. My take on your first question: 1. I said, "I want to go home." She replied, "I don't care!" She's so rude. or 2. I said, "I want to go home." Then she replied, "I don't care!" She's so rude. For your second question, it says we need to capitalise the first word in a sentence that is a direct quote. When quoting, the first word of a complete sentence should be capitalized, regardless of its placement within the main sentence. Example: Matthew said, “In that case, I'm going out for a walk!” Ref. www.grammarly.com/blog/capitalization-in-quotes/

As a teacher of children and adults, I found this very easy. However, I’d have loved my students to watch this whole series as it’s often a better understanding. I can use and explain punctuation, but we weren’t taught why or when we needed punctuation as a child. I’d get my students to read another person’s paragraph out loud. They’d realise when a pause was required to make it easier for another person to analyse. In Tasmania, Australia, our spelling is different , based on English grammar and spelling. That spelling can certainly make a difference ie ‘favourite’,rather than ‘favorite’ would jump out to me as wrong! At times we focus on the spelling more than the punctuation. Good lessons thank you, great examples as well! I wish I’d seen these videos 60 years ago! 🙏

This lesson was particularly helpful for me. In the past, when I used "because" in the middle of a sentence, I would precede it with a comma the same way I would if the word was "but". Now I know better. Thanks. Do you have any video that spells out all the rules for using spaces when writing? I get tripped up on that point sometimes. Thanks for creating your content. I don't use this platform to watch teenagers ride dirt bikes off their barn roof in an effort to land in the back of their sister's passing pickup truck. I'm here to learn and I'm grateful that you're willing to teach!

Thank so much for doing this for the world, your knowledge is much appreciated. I learned this when I was in ESL class in my college life in the U.S. I have forgotten how to use it, but you brought my memory back. Thank you might not enough for your time and knowledge, but at least I would love you know. Have a fantastic day, year, and forever.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have started to write short stories, purely for pleasure, after a long absence from writing anything. I was really surprised at how much I had forgotten about basic grammar. When and where to use commas correctly has proven to be the most difficult, so your last tutorial was really helpful. I’m not sure whether the last sentence is grammatically correct. Please advise?
