@@jantuijp'The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte' didn't disappoint, and they are in the makings of a new album AND a new film project... The reception of their (solo) works in the last seven years (2017 - today, June 2024), must feel like a payoff for the sweat and tears they have put into their work. Ups and downs have come and gone, but one seemingly tiny thing that began turning the table was when Alex Kapranos found the 'This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us' in an outlet MANY years ago, and took interest in Sparks. That led to the FFS album and touring, which opened the eyes of a new group of audience. Many old fans from both sides disliked the collaboration, especially the FF side, that claimed Sparks destroyed Franz Ferdinand's music and Sparks only were used FF for a last moment in the spotlight. I disagree with both sides. Sparks did have trouble reaching out, and Franz Ferdinand wasn't as big as they had been. Both bands needed a push, a fresh challenge. Sparks have never written such dark songs as they contributed with (take 'So Many Bridges') and to even think of FF, with big smiles, on stage singing 'Piss Off' was impossible. Kapranos wrote two songs, of sixteen, single handed, R+R wrote six alone. The rest are R+R and one to four of the FF members. A second coincidence that led to the album was when Kapranos, in San Francisco, suddenly had a toothache, and looking for the address to the dentist he was recommended was spotted by Ron and Russell. This led to the first mention of "making something together" in around 2004-2005 made it up to both bands' agendas again. The FFS album did pretty well, the tour in Europe was extended to the USA. Not bad, when aiming for a single, MAYBE ane EP, and coming out as a 16 songs album 😅 Franz Ferdinand released 'Always Ascending' in 2018. Sparks have released the albums; 'Hippopotamus' (2017), 'A Steady Drip Drip Drip' (2020) and 'The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte' (2023) Also the documentary by Edgar Wright (2021) and the musical movie 'Annette'* (2021) that gave them a number of prizes for both script and music. Worth mentioning, to OPEN the Cannes Film Festival is a great honor! Looking at this, it seems like Sparks have been more active than FF since 2015, but what FF has done, or not, can't be put on the shoulders of Sparks. *Directed by Leos Carax ('Best Director' at the Cannes Film Festival'), starring Adam Driver, Marion Cotillard and Simon Helberg. Driver was cast for the role of Henry McHenry around 2013/2014, before he was the big star he was when the filming finally started in 2019. In 2015 he became a superstar, when he portrayed Kylo Ren in the Starwars sequels. He could have left the project, but firmly remained, kudos!

I'm one of your younger fans - started listening to Sparks in 2009 when I was 14. ever since them I'm amazed. I'd listened most of their discography, and honestly there's no other band that could reinvent itself that many times. Never once boring.

According to the world in the divorce, none reinvents themselves more than slagdonna! An ironic wish fulfilment seeing as each year it's reinvented as a sex-mad, power-hungry, self-obsessed, attention-seeking old slag who can't sing or make decent tunes, nor do anything original! But hell-yes, reinvention, ay, and the big lie! Drones will believe anything a dictatorial emblem of evil forces them to! It's so easy. But yes, Sparks are just one of a kind.
@Navikthered2 жыл бұрын
I wish I'd discovered them sooner - I first discovered "This Town" from its' inclusion in Kick-Ass, but I never dug into them until I saw the trailer for Sparks Brothers and wondered what the fuck I'd been missing all this time. Literally all my previous favorite bands have been influenced by them. Plus, Ron's lyrics are some of the wittiest, funniest things I've ever heard. Songs like "National Crime Awareness Week" and "Funny Face" are fucking *hilarious*. Who else could write a song from the perspective of a narcissistic, dumb criminal who thinks National Crime Awareness Week is a tribute to his work? And Russell's beautiful falsetto and vocal range puts Freddie Mercury to shame - and I *like* Queen enough. Saw them live for the first time in April in Toronto. Best show of my life. They're insanely good live. Russell is like watching a human superball on stage - I can't move around like he does for an hour and a half and I'm 36. His energy and bounciness are nuts and infectious. And then Ron breaking into his trademark shuffle, hee!

@annabackman30283 жыл бұрын
I know the feeling. I heard 'Propaganda' first, a little later 'Kimono My House' December -75 - January -76. Loved it. Wished for their next album as, I think Christmas present, but before that 'Big Beat' was released, and I got "their latest album". And hated it. Kept playing 'Propaganda' and 'Kimono' during the years, must have seen them flash by on MTV once in a while in the eighties. I never did anything to investigate what happened to that amazing band, except for by accident finding a small article in an a couple of months old newspaper that Sparks had been playing at the Södra Teatern, and I wasn't sure that could be SPARKS!? Groups from the seventies were mostly fat seniors or dead. Some months later I was playing old seventies on YT. Slade, Sweet and Sparks. Of some unforgivable reason I didn't look at the suggestions I was given, until I saw that they were about to release a new album. The names were right, Ron and Russell, but no...? I STILL DIDN'T check up any videos. 😖. But when 'Hippopotamus' finally was out I realized it IS the same band!? Started with the title track. Just imagen my face 🤣! It took me through thoughts like "Is this for children?", "Have they gone mad?", "Are they desperate?", but when the song reached "There's a book by Anonymous" I started to listen, the shock was fading out, and "There's a painting by Hieronymus BOSCH, by Hieronymus BOSCH" I fell head over heels in love with the band again. Which probably tells a lot about me 🤣🤣! Not the first song I would recommend someone to begin with. I guess my brain is tuned in to a certain wave length, because Sparks are exactly what I had missed in music during the years. And Russell's voice😍, that's the only lasting love in my life 💖💖💖💖💖

Dear Russell dear Ron For me since you are the most complete band I have ever seen. You have 100 % humanity, warmhearted charisma , dedication plus ability both in musical terms in terms of text as well as in the design of your albumcover and videos, which in my opinion you fill with a lot of love. And of course not to forget your unique stage presence. I am almost in tears when I see a live performance of you because I find it so wonderful how you interact with your audience in a really loving way and no matter how much applause you get you always accept it with such kind gratitude , humility and especially in this business that is very unique. By the way Russell I've wanted to write that to you for a long time. I've watched so many different gigs in the past and I find it everytime as remarkable as you are today put 100 % power in your appearance almost to exhaustion. But compared to the older performances in personally made the observation that something positive must have happened in you. Because so lively , open ,liberating and with such enormous joy and satisfaction as in the performances of the last three years. I have never seen you in vocally speaking. I've always loved your voice but I think it's only now when you are old that you've finally found your voice completely! When I watch this my heart opens because I suspect that in the past perhaps due to publicly negative experiences you finally stand by you and your musical skills you can see that and above all you can hear your voice !Keep up the good work guys I take my hat off to you !!! I hope to see you back on stage very soon, because I miss you very much! !!!

I'm an absolutely convinced big fan of your great music and for me there are still so many songs from your past that I'm just about to discover everytime I'm so amazed at what an incredible variety there is in your songs !! I have to say I love a lot of your old songs. But in my opinion the quality of your songs since the lil beethoven album to the current steady drip album has increased again so that I would not have thought possible because they were at a high level in the past. Russells voice in particular has sounded much more loving, finer and more complete than ever in the last few years. I believe that now in old age he has found his full voice. For example especially by the song Life with the Mac beths I'm falling in love again in his voice it's magically! !

I think they're albums went down a bit after " Whomp that Sucker in 1983 and continued thru the 90's as they went back to synth music although i thought " No 1 Song In Heaven & Terminal Jive were excellent albums ! Albums such as "Hello Young Lovers & Exotic Creatures of The Deep " Were good albums . Iv'e always prefered Sparks as a band format and feel the last two albums are easily they're best since the early mid 80's band format is where they thrive . But thats just my opinion 👍

After its album release I spent couple of weeks just with this one song. The album still catches me in its entirety. Thank you so much!

If you can still bring such unused vigor to the songs after so many years, then it clearly shows that Sparks still shows all newcomers how to do it today. An absolutely fantastic song and the Mael brothers show in 2021 that you can always count on them ... the Sparks are a real great.

Been a huge fan of Sparks since high school (Class of '76) and they still sound as amazing as ever. Used to run into Ron & Russell in the Century City mall back in the day and would have lomg chats with Ron about Samuel Beckett, Kafka, Shakespeare, etc. Such a cool guy. Russell was nice too but he was usually shopping while Ron sat with a coffee reading. Last saw them in concert at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Such great memories! And now, after all these years and 25 albums, the Edgar Wright documentary 'The Sparks Brothers' is coming out and I can't WAIT!

Some days Sparks Bros are less sexy and just want spring to get here faster. Love their music.
