I have been a fan since the 1970s and I am very much enjoying this renaissance spurred on by the Edgar Wright movie, which I haven't seen yet but knowing the Sparks extensive repertoire I can understand the buzz. I still want to see a Finn brothers-Mael brothers collaboration. I say this every so often, Sparks and Split Enz/Crowded House - the number one collaboration in heaven!!!!!
@MadcapShambleton2 жыл бұрын
I was today years old when I found this video...and your comment! I was a long lost and lapsed Sparks fan; having seen the Edgard Wright doc when it was released, I too am very much enjoying the Renaissance (including that song from Exotic Creatures album). Having seen Sparks on tour this year, all I can say is they continue to be brilliant. And I am on board with your number collaboration in heaven!

I've loved them ever since they were on TOTP in 1974. My strict father came into the room, took one look at Ron Mael and said 'Son, he looks like he should be old enough to know better.' Sadly he died in 86 but Sparks just keep on rocking.
@rsmith79122 жыл бұрын
My Dad did look a bit worried when I was taking more than an interest in Sparks on totp in '74. He'd already panicked 2 years earlier when Alice Cooper was my main man. When I explained it's all just rock theatre but the music is really amazing he understood a bit more. I was also into Queen, who he liked himself, so that was ok. When Hippo came out I caught him lifting his weights to the music one morning (at the tender age of 80). He smiled and said 'this is quite good isn't it?). I finally made him into a fan! He'd seen the joy Sparks had given me all my life. We all need a passion in something.

Tyler's guitar work on "Amateur Hour" was incredible! That may have been the pinnacle of the performance yet "Dick Around" and "Edith Piaf" were fabulous. My favorite portion of the concert has to be the bone jarringly repetitive "My Baby's Taking Me Home" (at the 41 minute 30 second mark) because you come to realize each time Russell repeats the line it tends to grow in emotional intensity, importance, and confidence. This song is a primal distillation of 1975's "Miss The Start, Miss The End" from their album 'Indiscreet' into a seminal outcome as they prematurely leave the performance. Decades later Ron revisits and concludes that song by telling us the subject's outcome and I assure you it was well worth the wait! His partner is taking him home and not someone else. Years of familiarity mean nothing anymore, we're in this together and no one can or will replace you. My baby's taking me home! Solid, sturdy, steady, rock fast love. By the time we arrive at the soliloquy Russell ejaculates the thoughts in his head. He allows them to spin and spurt through the room as you realize just how powerful and moving one line in one single concept can become. It echoes and throbs into a thrusting crescendo! Sheer angst in the pants! "My baby's taking me home!" and we're out of here! We now know that 40 years later the lover's relationship in "Miss The Start, Miss The End" hasn't changed, their love is still strong and Ron implores us to ask of ourselves, "What's wrong with us and why don't we feel this way any longer?" They don't need more than each other, not much more than just each other. Loved it! Perfect bookends for a lengthy and productive career. Ron Mael, you're the best lyricist teacher going and you've deconstructed the song itself into, through, and past the point of conception! Too bad we didn't get an encore of "Tryouts For The Human Race". Loved the concert. Great voice remains in place, Russell Mael. I don't detect a change worth noting and I've changed a lot after nearly 50 years of Sparks. You're hard to keep up with and don't sound half bad at 70 years old!

This audience was showing respect for the music and the musicians. They wanted to see the show and hear the performance and I can appreciate that there are not phones blocking the view, no fans dancing at the front row and blocking the view, and those standing do so without interfering with their neighbors. This is a polite venue and unlike those I've been to recently but it all leads to a better looking band performance and we can concentrate on Russell's and Ron's stage presence. Had this been at one of the more rowdy shows the effect would have created a more "lively" video but you'd have lost so much of the esoteric aspect in watching and being able to hear the band properly. Should they make a live CD from this performance I just hope they don't add raucous synthetic sounding crowd shouts to detract from the performance quality. Ron, excellent work!

She looks like someone who was at school with me (in my class) in Weinstadt - Beutelsbach (Großheppacher Schwesternschaft) near Stuttgart for 2 years (2003-2004). But is that really possible? She at the Schwuz, listening to a song called "Missionary Position"?? That would have been pure irony so I think I mistake this woman here for somebody else. :-)
