The Rhythm Thief meaning is that there is no percussion on this song or 2002 L'il Beethoven album. So they have taken the beat away. "Lights out Ibiza" is a reference to no more dance parties on the most famous party location on earth. It's subversive and disruptive pop. The band constantly reinvent their sound, and challenged themselves to do an album without drums. It is revolutionary and is baroque orchestral pop. Brilliant.

This is a strange track even by Sparks standards. You should try "Unaware" from the recent smash hit album. "Hippopotamus"

Nearly everyone has heard of Ibiza, its a Spanish island very famous for its dance music. Sparks are an amazing band.

With over 25 albums, Sparks is a pretty deep rabbit hole. I think this song is about the end of the 'disco' era. People weren't as enticed with dance anymore, no more groove here. Ibiza, a famous party spot, was not so popular anymore. Lights out. This was the first I ever heard of making an entire electronic chorus out of one voice, and used cut and paste samples put back together like a jigsaw puzzle. They created a whole new bizarre vibe that was not really for everyone. Sadly, it led the way to the whole DIY DAW scene which has pretty much ruined popular music today. Sparks new album comes out in a few months.

This is from Lil' Beethoven which was a concept album for them. It tells the story of Lil' Beethoven and how he struggles to be famous. :-) He is singing "Lights out Ibiza". You can look up all their lyrics. If you listen to the album from start to finish it makes sense. So happy they intrigue you!!

Sparks: biting the hand that feeds them since 1974. Unfeasibly long song titles, unconventional song structures, refusal to stick to a genre to the extent that they ARE a genre, utterly unafraid to take shots at anything and everything, including - especially - themselves. Sparks is art-rock at its purest, and like any artform, what the viewer/listener takes from it is very subjective. For me, one aspect of this song is saying 'look, we can make a great groove without a thumping beat' - and that's hilarious when you take into account that they themselves had a dance music phase ('When do I get to sing 'My Way'' being a prime example)
