The gear is designed to shear when it hits something solid… that way it doesnt strip the gearbox underneath which is way more expensive and harder to reach. Worked on a farm in Nebraska with about 2000 acres of alfalfa so changed a couple of those per season….

Had to change a shear hub on our John Deere mowing machine a couple years ago. Appreciative they designed it like that.

Thats the nice thing about the NH cutter bars. Even the individual turtles are a sealed unit. So, even if a rock takes out the gear box. Your not getting metal frags through the whole machine.
