So May We Start - from the soundtrack to "Annette" performed by Sparks, Adam Driver, Marion Cotillard feat. Simon Helberg

ABOUT ANNETTE
Annette, the much-anticipated new film from LEOS CARAX, is set to open the 74th Cannes Film Festival on 6 July 2021 and will go on general release in France on the same date. Based on an original story and music by Ron and Russell Mael, the brothers behind the flamboyant band SPARKS, ANNETTE began life as an (unreleased) album but was transformed into a musical film after they met Carax. Having successfully maintained a five-decade-long career as one of the world’s most innovative and creative bands, it comes as no surprise that their collaboration with the visionary French director has resulted in a unique piece of film-making. The original soundtrack to ANNETTE, with lyrics co-written by SPARKS and LEOS CARAX and music composed and performed by SPARKS, features vocals from the stars of the film: Adam Driver (Henry), Marion Cotillard (Ann) and Simon Helberg (The Conductor).
About Annette,SPARKS says: “The characters live and breathe through the sensibility, tone, and lyrics of the music. In Annette, we set out to have virtually all the dialogue sung. It was a huge challenge, but one we are extremely proud of.“

LYRICS:
So may we start? (2x)
It’s time to start
High time to start
They hope that it goes the way -it’s supposed to go
There’s fear in them all but they -can’t let it show
They're underprepared but that -may be enough
The budget is large but still -it’s not enough
So may we start? May we start, may we, may we now start? (2x)
It’s time to start - May we start, may we, may we now start?
High time to start - May we start, may we, may we now start?
We’ve fashioned a world, a world -built just for you
A tale of songs and fury -with no taboo
We'll sing and die for you -yes in minor keys
And if you want us to kill too -we may agree
So may we start?
So close all the doors and let’s -begin the show
The exits are clearly marked -thought you should know
The authors are here so let’s -not show disdain
The authors are here and they’re -a little vain
A little vain
Now…
The music resounds and all -the flames are lit
So Ladies and gents please -shut up and sit
The curtain of our eyelids -lazily rise
But where's the stage you wonder
Is it outside, or is it within?
Outside? Within? (2x)
So may we start?

@@mohamadmahmoud6926 while I usually keep in mind de gustibis or there is no arguing in matters of taste it is still rude and bad etiquette if you have the privilege to attend Cannes and then troll. If you're going to criticize it then say why in your opinion you don't like it. None of us have a frame of reference or reason to listen or care otherwise. Just having been to Cannes doesn't make you a great critic with worthy opinions. Plenty of rich people are ignorant as we can all see as are unfortunately many film makers, so attending Cannes alone is not much of a big deal. Nor is it interesting. It would be interesting to hear why you thought only the one movie was of value.

@@kellymathews6615 I’m going to troll because of all the things Cannes did this year I disagree with. The lineup was incredibly safe, weak and predictable and the palm d’or went to one of the worst films I saw in the competition: titane. Titane is meaningless shock value crap. As for Annette, the pacing is too long, the music is awful (the spark brothers are a terrible band and I knew their music would be dreadful), the dialogue was laughably bad and the film seemed to want to invoke feelings of happiness, regret and sadness but all I felt was contempt and boredom. Adam driver gives his most lifeless performance to date and sings as if he’s getting a root canal. It isn’t pleasant to listen to. It was a pretentious bore overall. Leos carax is a hack

My mom just told me that back in the 60s she had a group of friends in Santa Monica who had a band that would set up in her living room and practice , her dad would get pissed and chase them out 😂 I asked what the name of the band was, she said “the sparks, and they made it big everywhere except the US” low and behold I look them up and they are real. Hahaha this is crazy.

We've always loved Sparks in the UK to the extent that I always thought they were from here. America's loss, UK'S gain. I've been lucky enough to see them live twice in Manchester but already next years gig is sold out. 73 and 76. Proof that we only grow old because we allow it.

I didn't know about Sparks until Edgar Wright tweeted out Propaganda a couple years back. Suddenly I start seeing them and their influence everywhere. Dozens of bands across the decades have covered their songs. They've been cited as inspirations for many more. Filmmakers, musicians, etc. How does such an incredible group go so overlooked in popular culture? It's baffling. Russ and Ron have become two of my all time favorites.

There's another part to my astonishment. Think of all of your favorite musicians. How many of them were putting out epic NEW music in their 70s? Oh, a lot of them play and sing as well if not better, but most songwriters don't have nearly as much success writing music after their 20s or 30s. This is one of the best songs I've heard.

I can add to that; knowledge about the human mind. I don't believe anybody has made such profound studies in how we react and act in circumstances we either forgotten we been through or never thought was going to happen. All the, whether we want to admit it or not, silly thoughts that pop up in the least expected situation. The unpredictable things we do, when life pushes us into uncomfortable situations. Ron must have been living as long as Yoda, which could explain more about him than his ability to write spot on lyrics, but I think Russell, the always young one, has been living that long too. They are a unit. Edgar Wright's words, that he during the years he has known the brothers and made the documentary, met only Russell twice, but never Ron without Russell speaks for that. Two remarkable men, by birth given a rare combination of mature souls and childish hearts! 😇💖💖💖💖

Tip of the iceberg to a fantastic film, the music of which, will send shivers down your spine as will the magical imagery. Awesome performance of Adam Driver. Got to the cinema, no less than three times...

@RheoTU
@RheoTU 2 жыл бұрын
@RheoTU
@RheoTU 2 жыл бұрын

@sonchik6324 2 жыл бұрын

This is an amazing song. One of Sparks's best since "When Do I Get To Sing My Way". I was totally charged up with this opening the film. Too bad the rest of the film didn't work. It was very difficult to sit through, however, much of it strangely lingers with you long afterwards.
