What a great and comprehensive video. Thanks for putting it together, and also for being so impartial. These hammocks all have their pros and their cons, which are in most cases subjective to the individual user. I personally love Dream Hammock and Chameleon, although I also own the original WBBB. The Zing It ridgeline and the hooks and rings all around the perimeter of the Chameleon are precisely one of the reasons I love it. I find those rings so useful and well positioned. The extra few grams that they add to the weight are at least partially off-set by the ultralight ridgeline, which as long as it can hold the tension it's good enough for me. But of course I have my pet peeves about these hammocks just like any dedicated user. Thanks again for the vid!

Rick Morales 100% agree. All of these things are very subjective. Regardless of my personal opinion, all three of these hammocks are amazing! And even my pet peeves are me nitpicking! I’m glad you found a use for all those rings!! Lol. I’m holding firm on wishing it had an Amsteel ridgeline though... or at least the option to have it made with one! 😂 Thanks for the comment and sharing your perspective! 👍

First off, good information. Not many people own hammocks from three great companies. On my Cameleon, I love the outside hooks for my under quilt suspension. It helps to keep it tight against the hammock. I use my side pullout to make my hammock more roomy. I also have the peak shelf, and ridgeline organizer. Great for my jacket/raincoat. The fabric is indeed soft. I just purchased a Warbonnet Eldorado. Haven’t spent the night in it yet. But from just hanging in my yard, it’s sweet. And yeah, Dream Hammock is amazing with customization. Maybe a Raven is my future. Whooo Buddddy!

@TripleNickelOutdoors

I didn’t know either but on the Dream Hammock website they stated that most of their hammocks are right lay (head left and feet right). I found this position comfortable and I noticed that my dominant arm (my right arm) has more room to move around the hammock to make adjustments and things like that. That might not dictate which direction may be more comfortable to you but it’s something I’ve noticed. Also, I’ve tried to lay in the other direction and it feels completely unnatural. Hope this helps! Nick

@@TripleNickelOutdoors Hi Nick, I'm still researching, and in that quest, I've found that a 1.6Hyper DXL sparrow with bug net weighs 44.3 oz. The Chameleon with bug net in Hexon 1.6 W weighs 20.4 oz. Is the extra weight worth it?
@TripleNickelOutdoors
@TripleNickelOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
The HyperD XL fabric has a max width of 74”. The Hexon’s width is 68”. You can have the hyperD cut to a smaller. Not to knock wide hammocks, but I used to have a 74” thunderbird from Dream Hammock and I noticed that I didn’t need all that width. I’ve been comfortable at 63”. The width is a personal preference but I wouldn’t go any wider than 68”. Something seems off with the Sparrow weight. I just used the hammock calculator on the Dream Hammock website and I got a finished weight of 23.34 oz. check it out and let me know what you got dreamhammock.com/hammock-calculator/

I had an UGQ Zeppelin UQ that was 48” wide and 83” long and it fit my wide hammocks better than an UQ of a more standard width 44 inches). If you go really wide with your hammock width, say 74 inches, you may notice some excess material flapping. I think 67” is more than enough width for a comfortable lay. You can call and talk to Paul over at UGQ and he should be able to

Hi nick I own a chameleon wide I’m 6’2” I noticed you tend to like wider hammocks. Do you still get extra flop around your feet? I feel like maybe I could have fit in a reg however the extra fabric seams to fill in with my top quilt. I imagine if I had a reg my feet would be up against the bug mesh then. Also how do you like sitting in a reg vs wide hammock? My wide is difficult to just sit in without cutting into my legs or does a reg width do this as well?
@TripleNickelOutdoors
@TripleNickelOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
On your wide have you tried folding over the material and then sitting in it? They may help it from digging into your legs. For me, a standard width is a little tight and I enjoy a little extra room.

fwiw the Chameleon is now only offered in 1.6 and 1.7. I'm not sure why they reduced fabric options. Also RE: Zing-It vs Amsteel for the ridgeline: I have always been under the impression that the ridgeline is just to help you keep sag, and not to have weight on it? I think the number I've always been told is that the ridgeline should only have something like five pounds on it?

Over time, I discovered that 90% of the time I didn't need a bugnet or top cover. Now I just soak my hammocks in permethrin a couple of times a season and I'm good. Mosquitos and noseeums don't tend to be that active after dark. I generally get to camp near dark. By the time I've pitched my tarp and hammock and had dinner, it's dark. Remove the bugnet/top cover from the equation, and you don't have to worry about switching from left to right. Just buy a gathered end hammock wide enough to taste at about a third of the price with less weight. I own about 20 hammocks with and without bugnets as well as hammock socks. 90 percent of the time, I grab a basic no net gathered end hammock. I use a double layer (reduces bites through fabric) with net in the Everglades. I use a sock when it's going to be well below 20 F. The rest of the time, I just climb in a hammock without fiddling with zippers.

I enjoyed your comparison! I currently have the Raven and love it! I'm 6'1", and am quite comfortable in the standard width. But I would love to eventually try a Sparrow in a wider width. I'd be curious to see how much more comfortable it is having the added width. The Chameleon intrigues me; but I really don't like that it has a Zing-it ridgeline. They should have used Amsteel, imo. Plus, I think I'm spoiled on the Smurf's quality and attention to detail!

Same here. Starting off with such a great piece of gear, it’s tough to make a switch to something different. If you’re pretty comfortable with your lay direction a Sparrow might be a good fit. You may not need to go really wide, but some additional with could be beneficial! Thanks for the comment!

@@TripleNickelOutdoors I always sleep head left/feet right. I only flip-flopped the first couple night I ever slept in a hammock. Nice comparison Borat :-) Not sure if I missed it, but what do you think of the pack hooks? Useful or not?
@TripleNickelOutdoors
@TripleNickelOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
Useful, mainly because I use an UGQ underquilt and there’s an exposed piece of shock cord that the pack hook locks into. It keeps the quilt in place so it doesn’t shift. You can see it in this vid at 4:40: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIq0fWtjqdeMiaM Thanks for the comment!

Great Info Nick! Overall, where do you stand with the width options? I'm 6'0 tall, what width do you think would be best? Thanks
@TripleNickelOutdoors
@TripleNickelOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
Darren MC very subjective but here’s my perspective. There’s around a 4 oz. difference between my Chameleon (58”) and my Sparrow (67”). So a slight weight penalty the wider you go. At 6’4” the 62” width of the XLC was a nice balance between weight and comfort. I think if you’re looking to go a little wider than the standard width of 58”, the 62” width of whatever hammock you choose should work out great!

Triple Nickel Outdoors thanks, very helpful. Also it looks like I accidentally replied to a comment instead of making a new comment. One question for you: I own a BB XLC and I’m 6’1”. Laying on the diagonal, I’ve found that my foot box area is kind of flappy, as if I’m not tall enough to fill the XLC. Do you have any tips or videos specific for a good pitch and lay in the XLC?
@TripleNickelOutdoors
@TripleNickelOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
Bob Preis the flapping is caused by the width of the material. Had the XLC had tie outs at the footbox area you could stake it out and it would help eliminate that. That’s why there’s a tie out at the head end so that the netting is pulled away from your face.

Two points: 1) you mention that you like the wider hammock because you're large. What is "large"? Seriously, that's important info in this context. 2) When choosing between them, I would send a noobie to the Chamelon over the XLC. Why? Because the noobie doesn't KNOW what side he (or she) is going to lay. The Chamelon supports figuring that out. Excellent job, my two minor points aside. Watching/reading comparisons of top products in any market is always a great way of getting a sense of what matters and WHY. Full disclosure: I have a older XLC, as well as a Therm-a-Rest something or other (GREAT fabric) and a Draumur XL which I haven't set up yet. I don't really sleep that comfortably in the XLC, so I'm looking at trying a Chamelon.

It's hard to speak for the masses because everyone's comfort levels differ. I just found that for my needs, a slightly wider than normal hammock body gave my a better lay. Other people of similar stature may find they can get away with the standard width. It's very subjective. I think I would send a noobie to those specifics brands because a lot of the guesswork has been done for you. As you start to get familiar with the different components and what works, and doesn't, you can better "fine tune" your set up. Thanks for the comment! Nick

Hands down the Sparrow. Probably due to the additional width. But they’re all comfortable and well made!

@@TripleNickelOutdoors thank you! I own a Hammock Gear 20 degree Incubator. Do you know if this UQ or other standard sized UQs would fit well on a wide (XL width) Sparrow? Looking around to see if UQ hooks on the Sparrow would be necessary for a wider hammock body.
