Note that in Halo Infinite, the Spartan IVs on the ring's surface were fighting for six months with zero (known--none of them mentioned anything about wayward augments in the logs) augmentation issues. Either it proves the augmentations' stability, or the checkups were being used as an invisible leash to keep the IVs in hand.

I believe that you are right about all the maintenance being a "leash measure." But, I'd also like to add a thought of that, all the maintenance and such (the whole host of support roles and needs and such) was a clever bid by lobbyists and other people wanting a renewal of the military industrial complex. The way installation 00 describes it in the beginning of the video, it's a lot like how our (US military) current military industrial complex operates so that we have $300 hammers.

Or maybe it's just that each individual author that 343 hires to write their books just can't keep up with the deluge of other bits and parts of lore that come from other authors and stories and such, so they forget important things frequently.

The Spartan IIs are undoubtedly awesome I'll always have a soft spot for the spartan IIIs, unlike the 2s and 4s the 3s were made to be expendable, performing some of the most dangerous and consequently most critical missions without the technological advantages of the other classes. Thrown in handfuls at the breach in the hopes that they could slow down the March of the covenant. They are the unsung heroes of the human covenant war in my opinion and we will never know most of their names or the sacrifices they made to give humanity a chance to stumble to its feet and fight back

Could it be possible that Spartan IVs are so maintenance heavy (medical scans, etc) not because they need it, but as a way to keep them under control? After all, ONI seems pretty worried about the possibility of rogue Spartans- making the IVs think they need all those resources would be a good way to keep them loyal.

@bradymenting5120
@bradymenting5120 3 жыл бұрын
I think the maintenance is more for optimization of performance. It's not that they NEED the maintenance, but the complexity of their equipment and implants means they need a team of specialists to keep it all in top condition. It's also possible that all the extra medical exams and reviews are to monitor and optimize their performance, and would have been included on the Spartan II's and Spartan III's if not for the desperate situation of the Human-Covenant War. Now that the UNSC has the resources and manpower, they can afford to spare no expense in keeping their super soldiers in tip top shape.

People who get hung up on the S-IVs' shortcomings relative to past generations are missing the point: S-IVs are logistically easier to work with, can be fielded in much greater numbers while still remaining _very_ formidable at the individual and the squad level, and they may well form the basis for vastly superior future generations who might be far more comparable to their direct predecessors. Barring some mistakes made in psychologically profiling and security-screening certain S-IVs, I view Project ORCHID as a huge step forward, and a promising look into the future of the UNSC armed forces and eventually, perhaps even humanity's physical evolution.

Honestly the community gets so entrenched in the "but muh spartan II's!" mindset that they miss the bigger picture with the 4's. A spartan II can only be made with 1 out of a billion people, whereas a iv even with less power than a II can be made from just about anyone. This makes them superior strategic tools, as they can be deployed on mass to affect a battlefield whereas a II, while impressive will always have limited impact upon a battlefield due to the sheer scope any real scale war theater would encompass. The IV's and II's can be compared to the Germany versus France tank roles early in WWII. While France's tanks were technically superior in most regards to the Germans, the Germans numerical superiority and doctrine allowed them to overrun the superior French designs and crush the French early in the war. The same thing happened during the end of the war with Germany producing high complexity, heavy importance tanks like the Tiger and Tiger II while the Soviets went with large numbers of good enough T-34s. Hell, this can even be seen in Halo reach, as although Noble team was amazing, there simply wasn't enough of them to actually turn the tide, and Reach fell all the same. While a II may be superior in a 1v1 to a IV, any decent commander will ensure that they aren't fighting a 1v1 but at least a 3v1 if not more. So at the end of the day, I would argue for the UNSC as a whole, the IVs will be a superior tool for waging a real war should the need ever occur.

They have saved millions of people during wars againts the remnants of The Covenant, the Promethean forces and even the newly introduced Banished forces. I think its possible that the spartan 2's and 3's might have received the s4 augments they are effectively missing. I also think that the s4's gradualy adapt to their augmentations too, making maintainance less and less necessary over time and slowly increading the spartans capabilities too, maybe even closing the s2 to s4 gap after a few decades, if the s4 has a cat2 genome. The maintainance would only be necessary because of the late augmentation date based long adaptation time (likely many years) and to always have peek fighting capabilities , but not for augmentation retention (i bet the s2 have a similar maintanance program for fitness. Spartans are considered army property, so maintainance is the used word). A cat2 or cat3 spartan 4 might only need augmentation very low adaption maintainance.

27:18 Okay, I noticed an error :( Telomerase is the enzyme that extends the telomeres in existing cells, mostly gametes, and isn't really active much, if at all in non-cancerous somatic cells. Its the *telomeres* that are slowly eroded after each copying, not the telomerase. Telomere = DNA sequence at the 3' ends of your chromosomes that is there because each copy can't copy the whole thing, and is basically there to protect against copy degradation. Telomerase = enzyme that extends the telomere. Massive difference. Also, the chromosome with 4 red areas as "telomeres" is just wrong, as there are only two ends to the chromosome, which is where the telomeres are, which you should've noticed that given it wasn't like that in the original image.

So the Spartan 4s are built to fight and survive but not to last under the normal sense of the human existence. My observation is this; the problem with every machine is that they inevitably breakdown. All these augments must have a use life, yet the high level of integration and the cost of up keep would suggest that that post war life is non existent. This is in every way a lifetime commitment. There is effectively no way to separate the man/woman from the machine once the process has started. The excerpt about how the Infinity has a whole deck deticated to just Spartans proves the monitary and industrial commitment to this project. Think about 3.75 miles of space just for just Spartans medical, housing, workout and their gear storage. These volunteers will never go home again and if the do they will die a slow and painful death once the augments break down occurs.

The "less powerful" stuff was a blatantly a later retcon IMO. There was no mention of it anywhere in the initial lore about S-IV and it only started creeping in, in some of the later crap. Frankly, the augmentations as actually described are more invasive, extensive, and far reaching then ANYTHING described on the S-IIs. Without the stupid authorial fiat that the S-IIs must be the most specialist of snowflakes despite being nearly 40 year old "technology" now, by any sane and reasoned accounting of the acutal described augmentations of both the S-IVs are drastically more advanced with a much wider ranged of augmented capabilities. About the only area you could kind of buy the S-II being better is raw physical strength, since the use of still growing subjects seems to have resulted in somewhat larger stature on average. But this idea that the S-IV are generally just worse then S-II is simply dumb and completely at odds with the acutal laundary list of of augmentations described for them that the S-IIs have absolutely no confirmed equivalence for.

They just wanted to depict S-IVs as more human in their personalities, but rather came off as being too immature and unprofessional to ever actually achieve their title and status by even real world standards. I suspect that Spartan-IVs were made so 'maintenance intensive' was so they could be more easily controlled by UNSC. Since Spartans were originally created to keep the "peasants in line". The 'Leadership' of UNSC apparently is rather paranoid, and seeks to ensure they could control their soldiers; so all they have to do is withhold maintenance, and the Spartan-IV will inevitably keel over dead...

On the matter for Spartans "being our destiny", the reason we humans write aliens and monsters to be stronger than us, is because deep down we want to be weak, we want to be the underdog, we want to be human and make the most of what we have. I think one topic people usually don't focus over is the "side effects". Just like the side effects our normal medicines may or may not have. As such, the general view among the fandom regarding the Spartan II's "reduced sex drive" is over exaggerated in my opinion. Some may DEFINITELY have those side effects, but it most likely doesn't translate to every single Spartan- II in my opinion. The Catalytic Thyroid Implant's risk is mentioned as "Rare instances of Elephantiasis- Suppressed Sexual Drive" which clearly suggests that this is a rare risk, much like the risk of bone privatisation due to skeletal enhancements.

Rewatching this video, because I LOVE the content and explanation of the real life aspect of the lore. I came to a bit of a realization: Spartan 4s are what Spartans would be like, both in terms of augmentation and need of a whole industry of support, had they been made in the current century, and not the time of Halo (I forgot the exact time setting). With how our current military and military industrial complex are set up now, the Spartan 4's heavily reflect that. Whereas, the Spartan 2s and 3s reflect the autonomous super soldier that would be made in the future, and needed in a war against the overwhelming numbers of the Covenant. Just a bit of thought

Like even though Noble six has some locked in background besides that he's literally just supposed to be you, and whoever your Halo infinite Spartan is they're just supposed to be you too they're made for you to change their armor, change their voice, make their background, change their name, so that they're more of a vessel for you the player to inhabit.

It's a common theory that ONI made up Spartan-IVs always needing maintenance to keep them on a tighter leash. Not an impossible theory but there's a ton of information that suggests otherwise. We often saw Spartan-IVs operating on their own without support for extended periods even before the Created and Banished Conflicts. Why would ONI allow this if they wanted to keep the Spartan-IVs under heavy control? Part of what makes Spartans or any spec-op so effective is their autonomy, taking that away would severely limit their effectiveness as supersoldiers. Which is a big deal considering Spartan-IVs are meant to be a critical tool of defense in case another Covenant War kicked off. I have a much simpler theory that's supported by the lore. The MJOLNIR Recruit armor is apparently designed to help newly inducted S-IVs deal with the strain and duress they experience post augmentation. In fact, every new S-IV is required to wear the Recruit armor until they "demonstrate mastery over their many augmentations." This wording suggest that whether or not a Spartan-IV requires maintenance depends on their experience. As shown in the video S-IVs undergo very heavy augmentation so it places a great deal of strain on their bodies. Due to their bodies being past the developmental stages it takes longer for the S-IV's bodies to fully accept or bond with their augmentations, so they require periodic tune-ups to make sure nothing goes wrong. The Recruit armor is designed to assist in this process and ease the burdern. As the operator gains more experience they get more powerful less dependent on periodic maintenance to the point where it may not even be necessary, thus affording them greater autonomy. This would explain why we often see Spartan-IVs operating for long periods of time without support. It should be noted that Spartan-IIs also apparently require augmentation maintenance.

That would make sense to covertly adapt the population so that the people who enlist in the military can hit harder on average than we can today.

So i have a couple points, where i think there may be missing lore, and i wanted to bounce a couple thoughts off of you. Firstly comes the lengthening of the bones. Bucks in armor height is approx 6'10, with the armor adding about 3 or 4 inches in height. So buck went from 6'2 to about 6'5/6'6. Surgical distraction osteogenesis seems a bit of an intensive procedure to grow only a few inches. (and wouldn't that leave said Spartan IVs with some rather unusual proportions unless they altered virtually every bone in the body?). Do you think it would be more/less likely that the growth would be induced chemically? Such as by repopulating the cartilage in the epiphysial plate, then using growth hormone to induce a final growth spurt. It seems to me a much less invasive procedure and more likely justifiable on a risk/reward basis, given the only modest height increase of S-IV candidates. My 2nd and final question refers to a piece of lore added in the official spartan field manual. It states (from memory) that candidates muscles are woven through with synthetic fibres, using similar if not the same technology used in MJOLNIR's polymuscle layer. Additionally Spartan Palmer her muscles were coated with a synthetic compound that granted her her enhanced strength. Do you think the aforementioned methods could be what the lore actually referred to in terms of muscle grafting? Just wanted to get your thoughts on those two theories as the former has bugged me for quite some time, the lore on project ORCHID can be somewhat contradictory at times
