Qh8+ here is a tribute to the best game of this same 1966 championship... game 10! And in that game Petrosian lets loose not one but TWO exchange sacrifices against a helpless Spassky. Thanks for the videos, Suren.

Puzzle at 13:05: 1. Qh8+! Kxh8 2. Nxf7+ K moves 3. Nxe5. White is up a knight vs. pawn. White could win the ensuing endgame with this knight maneuver: Nd3 - Nxc5 - Nd3 - Nb2, then advance his king to Black's h-pawn.

Nice one. Looks like you're the king of the puzzles now. That's pretty cool that you included how to win the endgame.

The position in probably inspired on the well known 10th Petrosian-Spassky game of the World Championship Match, Moscu 1966.

The only thing you're wrong is that White doesn't have to go for the H pawn. The king covers the promotion square, so you can just push both pawns consciously after freeing the way with the knight, torturing Black's king as he can't cover up both pawns.

Wow - Petrosian's development at around 7:12 might be the best defensive fortress I've ever seen, and the pawn storm was very impressive. Thanks for showing this game, Suren. 👍

The winning move is Queen h8 if the king takes the queen you take the rook with a fork and then you win the queen and if the king moves you win the queen

@@SurenAghabekyan It's not just that he's Armenian that we love him so. What a concept! Exchange sacrifice. Freeze the q-side. Piece sacrifice. Irresistible pawns. Original thinking. This player, who was sometimes classified as boring, is a TIGER.

Kind of misleading title, he’s down just one pawn , since for the rook he still has a piece and he’s one pawn ahead of Spassky!

yeah the 11th (I think) move by Spassky (where he tried to defend his pawn) was the beginning of the collapse. Against me, no harm don, but against Petrosian, you cannot be playing like..... like a blind, lame, stupid, 3-year-old, lemming!!! A-hahahahahahaha! :-P

He was werry special, my favorite chessplayer of all time time. His games are so controlled, it's amazing to se when he squeezes he's opponents in a winning position. And also how he gets his king to safety. One game comes to mind when he defend on the queenside deep down in opponents territory with a knight (also that game I think he had done an exchange sacrifice).

By the way, I had thought of h3 at 3:41 for White and was wondering why Spassky would have played h4 and I became happy when Suren said that h3 line was suggested by Magician of Riga and I became surprised to know next move suggested by the Magician of Riga: Nd4?! Well said Suren that only Mikhail Tal can play such tactical sacrifices (as written in the description of video)

Solution to the puzzle: 1) Qh8+ If: Kh6 Then: 2) Nxf7+ Kg6/Kh5 3) Nxe5+/Nxe5 and White will wrap up quickly from here If: Kg6 Then: 2) Qxe5 and white will wrap up the game easily If: Kxh8 Then: 2) Nxf7+ Kg7/Kg8 3) Nxe5 and White can win from here if played perfectly

The winning move for white in the puzzle is queen H8 check. If king moves, then black's queen falls for free. If king takes, knight takes rook with check forking the queen.
