I think it's actually more simpler than that. Phil Spencer pretty much confirmed that components aren't getting any cheaper. This is why both consoles aren't getting prices drops but actual price increases 4 years in. And Sony's lowest profit margin in decades earlier this year. If Sony is gonna make an expensive console that only a small % of hardcore fans will buy.... You might as well get high margin from it

Yes it's expensive. Yes no disc drive makes it even crazier. But the thing that bothers me the most is they didn't even mention the "disc drive sold separately". Like they're trying to gaslight the entire gaming community into thinking this is perfectly normal and to be expected all of a sudden, that the most premium console on the market doesn't come with a disc drive. As a patient gamer who typically waits to buy games used for $10-$20 and then trade and sell them after, I'm pretty concerned about how nonchalant they we're about this. I'll never accept a digital only world or pay $80 for a game that is bound to my account and useless after I play it. I think the PS6 will definitely come without a disc drive. I hope we can buy one separately and that physical games are still an option and all AAA games get physical releases. Even if a disc drive is an extra $100 I’m okay with it, but I need that option to be there and I’m worried it won’t be.

I remember CDPR saying that unlike Witcher 1 and 2, they had think about the consoles first when making Witcher 3. Now, I see Wukong on PC outselling the PS5, 4 years into the generation. Even worse, PS own published game Helldivers 2, selling more than half on PC. People still thinking PCs are too complex, players still like to the couch experience and just plug and play, the move already happened.

The PS4 Pro was priced to move and did not sell in volume. So if you are not going to sell "Pro' variants in volume no matter how cheap it is you may as well sell it to the "power user" and make great margin per sale. "Power Users" are not going to be deterred by getting nickel and dimes with the stand and disc drive. Also by pricing the Pro at $700, the inevitable $600 PS6 will not have that specter of the PS3 price point hovering over it. Moreover, I am sure inflation is making it to where AMD is not cutting prices on component they way they did in the PS4 gen.

It is 950€ in Germany if I want a Disc Drive and a vertical stand. I bought my launch ps5 for 499€ which inluded the drive and stand. so we are talking slmost double the price after 4 years for a graphics improvements, which tbh didn't wow me at all. Sure 4k60 fps on titles is nkce and pssr seems quite compelling on a system level that can be applied to all games. But the price is too much imo. And I use the ps5 as my main system and would consider myself a playstation fan. I guess voting with the wallet and showing that people don't want these prices is the best thing to do. My launch ps5 is still going strong and I think it will last until the ps6.

I think the price may have been more palatable if they reduced the storage to 1TB and had a disc drive...I can live with 1TB, but not a console without a disc drive given I have a library of physical media (PS4 and PS5)...no amount of software updates to the back catalogue of games is going to help if I cant put my disc in the machine....and that is the only thing they have marketed for the PS5 Pro, improvements to the existing catalogue

For comparison, 5 years ago they announced digital games were 53%, the first time they passed 50%.

I could see this cycle being extended a bit. I don’t think anyone is dying for 120fps or 8k as the standard. We just don’t need it. Especially if it’s just going to make everything cost more. I’d much prefer 60fps 4K to be the peak. And focus on keeping things affordable as that standard becomes widespread and sustainable.
