I have a pair of angels in a community tank, I've seen a spawn get to wriggler stage once before female ate them - my plan is to put this pair in a tank by themselves so they can raise a spawn as soon as the the baby goldfish that are in that tank get big enough to go out to the pond - I'm thinking that the community tank is too busy for the female angel to feel safe - wish me luck 😎 I found your channel through Jeffroz Wed livestreams, I'm so glad I did!!! 💕👍

This video was made years ago, so I don't remember exactly how I did it, but I probably poured most of the water into the sink through a fine meshed net (in case any babies were accidentally poured out) and then poured the remaining water into the small aquarium.

They are hard to catch spawning. I once set the camera up for 3 days, gave up, and had them spawn a few hours later. The thing is that they take a long time to start laying but, once they do start, it is all over relatively quickly. Fingers crossed you get lucky with the timing soon!

Great video! I've got my first batch of wigglers in a 5.5gal, they spawned on a flat rock so I just took it out and placed it in the 5.5 with a sponge filter and air stone. But most of the wigglers have fallen off the rock and are now in a large cluster on the bottom of the tank. Are they going to be alright there? They're still moving around but I'm just worried :\ I bought some meth blue to put in when they were eggs, when do I start doing water changes? Thanks!
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
It is normal for the wrigglers to fall down to the bottom. Just be sure you have some water movement around them so they don't get stuck in stagnant pockets of filth. Not too much water movement...just enough to keep the water circulating. Not enough to lift the fry off the bottom. Instead, it should move them around slightly, but not lift them or swirl them through the water column. A slowly bubbling airstone placed a couple inches above them usually does the trick.

Hi Dan, My pair laid eggs on the filter extension so I took it out and put it in a 10 gallon tank when they became wigglers. They seemed to have been doing well. Alot of them have died and maybe only 10 started moving around at bottom of tank. I now have two free swimmers and a few that are kind of hopping at bottom of tank. Any thoughts as to why I lost so many? This is my first attempt.
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Dora, For a first attempt, sound like you did pretty well. Most of us don't get any wrigglers at first. If they died in the egg, my guess is that their was not enough water circulation. IF they hatched and then died before becoming free swimming, it could be the same thing or it could be food decay. It is important to keep from feeding them until they are free swimming. If they died after becoming free swimming, my guess is ammonia from decaying food or not enough food. It is a bit tricky figuring out the balance between heavy feeding and clean water that the fry need. I can't, of course, know for sure what happened in your case without being there, but the above are some common scenarios and I hope they give you some ideas of how to get a bit further next time you get a spawn.

I moved to a gallon jar filter from angels plus. did not assemble properly and had to move to another small tank - assemble the filter and move back to the angels plus jar. My question is: how durable are the wigglers. to this movement. I can see some moving but most are just laying on the sponge at the bottom

@DansFish
@DansFish 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Andy, I'm thrilled to hear you are making progress in the quest to raise these fish. You'll get it in no time! My favorite way to clean the tank is to install a hamburgmatten filter and siphon from behind the filter so the babies are protected. Alternatively, you can hang a large brine shrimp net over a bucket and catch any babies you accidentally suck up. As for how often to change the water, it depends entirely on how many fish are in the tank, how much food is being fed, how mature the filter is and what the filter capacity is, how high the temperature is, and if there are any ammonia/nitrite/nitrate hungry plants in the tank. As a general rule, the more you feed and the more often you change the water, the quicker the growth and the larger the number of fry that survive.

Great video!! I have a pair that just laid their second batch. I completely destroyed the first batch process. With being a newbie I tried moving them and the eggs, which were on a leaf, to a separate tank. I have 2 questions. First, the female gets very aggressive with the male about a day after laying the eggs and he fights back a little but then just ends up trying to stay out of her eyesight. Is this normal or should I remove the male? Second, what filter do you use? Couldn't quite understand what you said in video. Thanks!
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
Howdy J, 1. If the aquarium is small, this might be an issue. The females job is generally to care for the eggs and immediate spawning area. The males job is to cruise the territory and keep other fish away from the immediate spawning area. If the tank is too small for the male to get out of the immediate spawning area, the female may wonder why he is not out there doing his job and encourage him (roughly) to do so. 2. I use a simple sponge filter and a box filter, both air powered. Hamburgmatten filters are used in the 5.5 gallon rearing tanks.

They ate most after 2nd day. I also have a gourami and a pleko in the tank . Should i try and move the gourami ?can the eggs survive outside water while transfering?
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Jeremey, If you give them time, they may figure out how to raise the eggs/fry on their own. I have several customers who did not have success with angels raising their eggs/fry until the 4th or 5th spawn. Or, you can always remove the eggs. The eggs are very sticky and won't fall off the spawning site if you remove it gently to another container of water for incubation.

@joythomas163

I have a pair of angel fish that seem to spawn all the time in a community tank. The babies have made to wiggler stage but then the parents seem to loose interest and the babies are picked off one by one. Even when I tried putting them in a breeder net I had a Danio figure out how to jump in and eat the babies. So this time I have taken the plant out that they laid their eggs on and put it in a 10 gallon tank with bubbler and heater. The Bubbler is set right under the leaf that the eggs are on hoping this gives enough circulation to keep the eggs clean. I wish I could attach a pic so you can see if I set everything up right. I so hope this works would love to see the babies grow.

My favorite time is when they start to change and look like real angel fish. It’s neat to see the artificial way to raise them, I’ve always just let the parents do their thing. Nothing like that cloud of babies swimming around mom that is so cool. I would like to say, and it’s nothing about you personally, I think we are doing these fish a disservice raising them artificially. I think babies raised by parents have a better success rate when they become parents. I think you get stronger babies and a bigger yield when parents raise them - there’s a special slim coating they eat off the parents (like discus) I think helps them with growth and maybe even immunity. Ok, soapbox over. Hope I didn’t offend you. I love your videos.
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
Howdy Mega, It is pretty cool when the parents raise them for sure. And your opinion does not offend me in the least...I actually think you make some good points. As long as arguments are stated in a mature manner, and yours is, then all opinions are welcome. Best, Dan
@beautytryouts
@beautytryouts 4 жыл бұрын
Well I'm positive that no one ESPECIALLY Fish lovers in general would certainly agree in regards to the fry living and growing up with their parents...I can't really imagine ANY argument that would disagree with that belief...unfortunately it just so happens that many times the parents will go and just start picking them Off 1-by-1 until there are literally no more to eat! Why?!?? There are tons and tons of reasons/factors(from it being a form of "protection" in fear that other fish...regardless if it's even a community tank or they're literally the ONLY fish in the tank...even separating the father into another temporary tank...or vise versa...with the mother ~they will still have that cross-wiring in their brains from years of evolution...if their babies are in danger of being eaten...then they just say "Eff it...No one🐟🐬🐳🐙🦂🦀🦐🦑🦈🥒🦄is gonna eat MY babies but ME🐠❗And they will just start swallowing them, because that ensures that THEY➡🐠🐠 will at least get the benefit of the food/nutrients...and the nourishment to remain healthy in order to try to have babies again! However the same thing can literally continue again and again. There's other reasons/theories: from making sure to provide ENOUGH FOOD/And some parents just don't do well...sometimes inexperience...yet some have PLENTY, they legit just continuously breed to try and cannibalize😋 their young🤷🏻.) Whatever the reason...or Lack of reasons...either way, this is the reason many fish owners will separate the fry for their best chance of survival until they're big enough to where it's no longer a risk. Obviously there's some basic things you do in order to try and prevent them from being eaten: such as plants/etc where they have a chance to hide, remove other fish🐟/tank-mates, or putting them in a little separated hatchling/baby tank within the tank...but sometimes the little holes/slots simply aren't small enough and the fry can fall right through...and can't get back in...either way, it pretty much defeats the purpose of the momma/parents being together with their fry. Anyway... I apologize for rambling on & on, and I realize that this comment was made like a year ago, and I'm sure you probs know all this info already...but I thought I'd give some advise for those who may be new fish-parents, and may have been experiencing this...and TRUST ME....THE STRUGGLE IS REAL!! I feel for ya! It's LEGIT the most frustrating thing about being a fish parent when your fish become parents themselves... it is probably one of the most difficult things you'll come across when you put so much hard work into making sure your fish babies are living a good life and the most rewarding part is when they become parents themselves but that process is really difficult to get there especially depending on what type of fish you have! Even & ESPECIALLY just betta fish ....oh my gosh they are so freaking picky❗ and the session of you just trying to pick out THE PERFECT pairs to match, so that you find the PERFECT outcome or Amazing features and traits that people would LOVE to see! The most beautiful male and females to make some beautiful little babies with ALL of their perfect details in the coloring/ their fin shape/etc but no matter what YOU would prefer if they don't like the females that you chose for them and would love for them to mate with~ And it just ain't happening because males are SO picky❗But I FINALLY when they do show interest & ALL the work that you've done so far and then to they have to go through like a courting phase, going on a bunch o romantic dates and setting the. PERFECT mood/& the PERFECT LIGHTING/TEMPERATURE/FOOD/& Then 1 particular leaf that they NEED for their privacy....There's SOOOO many factors that go into it...even the moon and the weather. But once that Miracle of life has take place it is SO rewarding when it does... and then ALL OF THAT HARD WORK... just to lose them ALL❗❗❗😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Hi Dan, when you do water change, do you get water from the parent’s water tank and then add the hydro peroxide or you use tap water + hydro peroxide?
@DansFish
@DansFish 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Michelle, I use tap water which is aged, aerated water that has been bubbling for 12-24 hours and has been dechlorinated. I just put it in a bucket, put in an airstone and some dechlorinator, and wait. This allows the water to stabalize before it is added to the fry. Then, I do the water change for the fry (usually around 100%) and add the hydrogen peroxide into the fry tank with a dropper.
@mitchiecko
@mitchiecko 4 жыл бұрын
Dans Fish correct me if I understood it correctly.. so for 1st water of fry eggs on the tank1, you use aged tap water (bubbled for 12-24 hours and dechlorinated) and put 1 drop of hydrogen peroxide and put the fry eggs on that tank1. Then on tank2, you prepare the same aged tap water with 1 drop of hydrogen peroxide so you can use it on Day2. So after Day1, you transfer fry eggs from tank1 to tank2 for Day2. Then while on Day2, you prepare tank1 for Day3 with aged tap water with 1 drop of hydrogen peroxide.. that kind of cycle?

Got a question nobody addresses. With a spawning pair. How much failure is normal? There's a big learning curve here as a person doing this for a first time. I'm on my 2nd spawn attempt, hatch rate was low, but better than the first spawn, the eggs did fungus also, even with methelyene blue. The didn't lay most eggs vertical, they laid most of them on a horizontal surface. The ones that were vertical seemed to hold up longer. So the question. How much failure is normal? Should I be losing the first half dozens spawnings before I find that groove of what I'm supposed to be doing? Will I them have more issues to learn from when they transition from wrigglers to free swimming? I don't want to get discouraged and keep trying, but clearly this is harder than the books and internet make it out to be.

Here is where im at had one spawn they made it to swimming to the top then the parents ate them all. just had a second spawn this time I moved them to a ten gallon with a soft air stone going I have a small back of the tank filter I'm going to wrap the inlet in thick foam so they don't get sucked up but I am lost at what and when to feed them threw the stages and how long etc. can you buy fry eggs at like Petco or ??? I'm very very lost but I want to get this right so bad. I love my angel parents and am over the moon they have given me babies any help is wanted

Congrats on the babies! I start feeding them as soon as they are free swimming. Baby brine shrimp is the best way I know of to consistently raise batches of angelfish with high survival rates.

I moved my angel fish eggs from my 75 gallon to my hatching jar. I usually take the slate and brush the eggs off with a soft pointed craft brush. Then put the slate back in larger tank. They do just fine. All hatch except for the unfertilized ones. Most all hatched eggs live. Only a few do not survive. I feed baby brine shrimp that I hatch and micro worms that I grow. My question is: the wiggles attach themselves to each other and the unfertilized eggs which is normal, but is it is bad to let them stay attached to the unfertilized eggs? I'm afraid they will die due to the fungus on the bad eggs moving to the wigglers. I have tried to remove the bad eggs one at a time, lots of work as they want to stay attached. Is it ok to leave them alone? Will they eventually break loose so I can suck up the bad eggs? Thanks for information. I have used a pipette to gently blow wigglers from the bad eggs, lots of work. I now have a lot of babies and don't know what to do with them. There are no small mom and pop stores here onlyPet Smart and Pet Co. They do not buy from individuals. Guess I will be giving away to family and friends and local fish co-ops. This hobby was an accident, no one told me they breed so fast and so often. Only bought a few for my tank because they are so beautiful. Now what? Soooooo many babies. 😂😢

OMG, I only have one egg that hatched ... so only one fry on the bottom of my 6 gal tank with a sponge filter. It hasn't started swimming yet, but my guess is that it should be swimming by tomorrow. I have two, very very different looking angel fish ... which could be why I only have the one fry. Any pearls of wisdom would be appreciated. Today I started my brine shrimp ... and the temp in my tank is in the middle of the green zone on my thermometer. Just one is all I have, and I want to keep it!

@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
Howdy Cheryl, If your question is regarding moving fry from the hatching container to their first grow out tank, I do it one of 2 ways: 1. The evening before the wrigglers become freeswimming, it is possible to gently and slowly lift the spawning pipe from the hatching container and simply move it to the grown out tank with the wrigglers still sticking to it. I then take a turkey baster and remove any fry from the bottom of the hatching container and transfer them to the tank. 2. If the fry have already detached from the spawning pipe and are free swimming or skipping around the bottom of that hatching container, I pour the majority of the water out of the hatching container. the babies will generally stay towards the bottom if this is done slowly and gently. Then, I pour the last bit of water with the babies into a smaller container or cup. sometimes I have to rinse a few sticky babies out of the hatching container with a baster or the like. Then, I pour everything from the smaller container into the grow out tank. I guess you could call it throwing out the babies with the bath water. Hope that helps!

What is frequently? and what is your method of water changes without sucking up fry?
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
John, I have an automatic water changing system in my fishroom. It changes about 25%-33% of the water in the tank each day. My overflow which drains the tank is covered with a fine sponge, so the fry don't leave with the dirty water.

I just watched a series on artificially hatching angelfish eggs by angelmania. He suggests leaving the chlorine in during the egg stage because it helps to keep things sterile. He also uses hydrogen peroxide too like Dan mentioned. Once they become free swimming, he switches over to tank water. Hope this helps :)

@dylanz5598
@dylanz5598 4 жыл бұрын
Hey bud I got a question for you or for anybody that can answer it. As you said in about 5 minutes an 40 seconds tou said the white eggs weren't fertilized. My buddy has 2 angel fish that have laid eggs 3 times now and each time the eggs have stayed white and the first 2 times the angel fish ate them. The 3rd time I helped him put them in a 5.5 gallon tank. Thinking they would be fine but they eventually built a clear sponge looking bacteria over them. So I'm pretty sure they're dead. But my question is if the eggs stay white that means the male isn't fertilizing them? Right. Or can the eggs be white and eventually babies will start popping up.
@DansFish
@DansFish 4 жыл бұрын
If the eggs are white from the get-go and don't change color, they are infertile. Could be the male is not doing his job. Could be your water conditions don't allow for successful spawning (probably not, but a possibility). Or, you could have 2 females spawning together-believe it or not it happens pretty regularly.

How big should be the tank so that the babies grow to their full size. I have 180 babies now in 50 gallon tank.
@DansFish
@DansFish Жыл бұрын
It depends on how much is fed and how much/often the water is changed and the filtration system, etc. The more food and the more frequent the water changes, the more will reach their full size in any given aquarium.

@DansFish
@DansFish 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Wendy, As much as you need to and as often as you need to in order to keep the water parameters healthy. It greatly depends on fish load, food volume/frequency, filtration, and plants, but I'd say that your average weekly 30% water change works for most folks.

do the wigglers die if they fall at the bottom of the tank? (bare bottom)
@DansFish
@DansFish 4 жыл бұрын
If they fall to the bottom temporarily, and the parents pick them back up, they are fine. If they fall to the bottom in a hatching jar without their parents and there is adequate water flow and the jar is clean, they are usually fine.

@DansFish

Yes, angelfish fry can survive on crushed up flake foods and such. However, you will get a much higher survival rate and much better growth if you can offer them baby brine shrimp. With flakes, a few will probably make it.

@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
Hello John, I wish I could answer specifically, but there are sooo many variables to consider. In a lightly stocked tank with lots of plants, you might only need to change water every 4 months. In a more heavily stocked tank, you may need to do it twice a week. The real answer is to change as much water as often as necessary in order to keep the water chemically clean, and that varies from tank to tank. For most people, changing about 1/3 of the water every week or two works well. As for feeding, I'd say adult fish only need to eat once a day or so...as much as they can easily finish in a single meal.

Can you tell me why my angelfish eat their eggs
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Abdul, Thanks for the query. Angelfish often eat their eggs for the first several spawns. Most of them will learn to raise their eggs/babies after several false starts. However, some never do successfully raise their spawns. Also, sometimes the fish will eat their spawn if they feel stressed or insecure due to tank mates or a lot of people walking by and the like.

If you want to raise a bunch of babies for sale, remove the eggs. If you want to see one of the coolest things in nature, let the parents raise them. It might take them a few tries to get the hand of it, but they usually will.
