I have such an interesting relationship with the Wii. My grandfather got one of the early ones and loved it. He died in April 2008, but today me and my older brother looked at how the save data on the system. He started crying when he saw my grandfather’s data. His last memory of him is playing the Wii when my grandfather was really sick. The Wii is a fun system, and I still play mine often. Good video!

I bought the wii fairly late in 2011 and played it intensely until 2014, but the memories it created in that short time are impressive. The Miis from that time remind me of that period was still close to the 00's, wich was somehow the best time to be inspired by all things retro. No friend of mine died, but I lost a friendship with my best friend and he is still a mii on the console, also I've lost a person wich was like a grandfather figure to me: Satoru Iwata.

The real beauty of video games that are often missing as an adult are the memories shared with others playing these games. I can count so many fun times I had with my brothers growing up, like the time my oldest brother beat Nick Bruiser on Super Punch Out on my birthday, or the time my brother and I figured out where to find the head part in Mega Man X from reading a Gameinformer magazine about Mega Man Xtreme, or how I used to believe all those cheat code websites that spread false rumors about Pokemon, like the hotdog stand behind Bill's house or a bird called Crysallis that was a fusion of the three legendary birds. I talked with them about these things all the time... It's too easy to find walkthroughs, fact check on KZbin about rumors, etc. nowadays. I like sharing new gaming memories with people online in such large communities, but I miss the days where I would play with close friends and family. At least I'm trying to with my bride as I introduce some games to her. :)

For those who did not know: The reason why the Wii's disc's drive fails so much, was because of double layered discs causing execessive strain on it. Have your disc reader died? Did you play a lot of Super Smash Bros Brawl? Yeah, that was why. Cheers.

From what I found on the internet. here's a List of the Wii games that are Dual Layered: The Last Story Metroid: Other M Metroid Prime Trilogy Raving Rabbids Collection Sakura Wars, So Long My Love Samurai Warriors 3 (and Japan only Z3) Super Smash Bros. Brawl Xenoblade Chronicles Brawl was the first early release game that used dual layer discs, while Xenoblade was the last release game that had a dual layered disc

I think plugging 100+ hours into Xenoblade (the English language version is dual-layered to fit both EN and JP voice tracks) is the thing that killed my Wii.

I used to watch KZbin on the Wii until they shut the service down in 2017. The pro was that it had no commercials at all, also funnily one could see old avatars of users wich they probably used before KZbins redesign. The quality was not HD, but it was great to simply run it in the background. The Wii uses around 14 Watt, so playing or watching something over a long period of time does not cost much money at all in the end.

We saw thousands of Wiis back when I was repairing consoles, like you mentioned 99.95% of them were kids throwing things into the slots(infact I have a few videos on my channel from that), the next major problem was just dirty lasers, I had a few laser replacements aswel but we tended just to replace the lens, the drives are expensive when you factor in shipping, I might have seen 3 bad motherboards during that time, bad BGA soldering was to blame, other problem was the bluetooth module would fail and the system will start up with a black screen, you can actually test for it by pressing the sync button and looking if the drive flashes XD Worst one I saw was a ant infestation, will never forget the ladies face when I showed her , there were hundreds of eggs, thousands of ants, cleaned it up and the motherboard worked 100% extremely robust console. PS Subscribed, you know what your talking about especially the xbox 360 refurbish video!

16:46 Those aren't fuses. Those are capacitors. CPUs and GPUs performa massive amount of signal switching, and to keep stable power supplies, a lot of capacitance is required near the switching to basically provide a burst of extra energy when switching and prevent brown-out conditions on the power supply rails. In the old days, coupling capacitors were just installed on the PC board, next to each chip. This is still true, but some larger chips will have dozens and even approaching a hundred or more coupling capacitors on the underside of the PC board, or even mounted on the interposer of the chip (the board that the silicon die is bonded and connected to, that in turn is soldered to the PC board. This allows coupling capacitors to be mounted even closer to the chip than just mounting them on the PC board allows.

If you're on ebay and want a quick way to distinguish a Gamecube backwards compatible model with one that is not, try looking at the "Wii" logo on the front: Models that have "Wii" turned sideways/vertical like a book's label on it's spine when the system is sitting horizontally can play Gamecube games. Models that have "Wii" properly horizontal when the system is sitting horizontally do not have backwards compatibility.

Few notes: - Both the WiFi and the Bluetooth modules can be removed through software hacks, although so far I have released only the one for the WiFi. - The 24MB RAM is not dedicated to the GPU as VRAM. The RAM is split for different reasons, one being the fact that the 24MB is the one used by GC games, while Wii softwares can access both of them and use them however they want (although part of the 64MB one is used by the Wii kernel). - Oh and the smaller die in the GPU is a 1T-SRAM. The Starlet is inside the bigger die.

To be a bit fair about the Wii, the most interesting thing about it was the Wii Remote. The remote as a controller was very simple but at the same time, it's the one that has all the sensors, so it not only has controls for the buttons but also for all the axis of the accelerometers and the position from the sensor bar (which has no sensors, only just 2 IR sources and the remote calculated the distance and the position between those 2 dots and I don't remember if it could actually sense more than 2 dots) and then sends all that info to the system. Also, it was very well implemented, as opposed to the PS3 sixaxis

The Wii U was a very interesting console hardware wise. It had two GPU'Ss and two CPU's. Its main GPU was based off of the Radeon 4650 while the second GPU was the Wii GPU. The main CPU was a trio core CPU clocked at 1.24Ghz based on IBM power PC 750 architecture. This CPU was essentially and overclocked Wii CPU with 3 cores and more memory cache. They also optimized the CPU making it capable of executing out of order commands. The second CPU in the Wii U was a ARM926EJ-S single core CPU that ran the operating system.

Come to think of it though - you think the Wii's disc drive takes up a lot of space? The Wii U uses a full size 5.25 inch desktop drive judging by teardowns - that actually means the drive in that system is probably half the volume of the console (and most of the weight) if not more. A Wii U without the disk drive could be half the size or less...

Man, the engineering on this was as intricate as a Jigsaw trap. I'm really impressed. From the outside, it looks straightforward with the design, but there is a lot of tiny parts on the inside. I really like how simple the Wii was and how the disc drive took up half of the console. I find that it still had the best first party Nintendo support to this day. I find that it had a Frankenstein design because of the similarities it had with GameCube.

I can’t believe just how complicated the system was given it’s specs and everything. Just about any one who wanted to build a similar system that size today would be able to accomplish it in a much more simplistic way, however if you go back in time to when it was new it does seem pretty impressive how they were able to pack everything they did into that small console. Also to answer that question no way in hell would I want to work on a system like that back then. There is just way too much stuff to take off to fix such simple issues. Edit: side note just started watching your videos recently. Amazing content. I subbed, turned on notifications and will be binging a lot of your videos. Very entertaining.

Starlet also does the security. It controls some settings and the reset line of the CPU. On boot, it checks the validity of the bootfiles before allowing the CPU to run them, and whenever a mode change is necessary, the CPU sends a request to Starlet, and then Starlet resets the CPU to run in a specific mode. Every time you start a channel, the CPU is reset and another OS is loaded. And basically every game comes with its own copy of the OS (called IOS for the Wii and MIOS for the GC). That's how they managed compatibility with system upgrades.

The Wii definitely looks like a light-weight console. At least, it did to me. I’d never owned it during its original run. All the promotional material depicted this small, white rectangle. The least imposing thing ever, right? Well, after buying one, picking it up for the first time, and feeling the absolute HEFT it has that is when I realized “Woah, there’s a lot more going on inside the Wii than it seems.” Nintendo packed a lot into a small package. And it shows.

The Wii, even though it has backward compatibility, cannot be hooked up to any sort of digital input. It completely lacks digital outputs of any kind. Yes, you can use an external converter box to convert to HDMI but that sacrifices image quality and introduces analog noise. The Gamecube (DOL-001 model only) has a digital output that can be hooked up to HDMI with an adapter. No image quality loss. The image quality of the Gamecube hooked up via HDMI is FAR superior to the Wii. The other option (if you don't care about things like the GBA link cable which the USB controller adapter does not support) is to use Nintendont to run Gamecube games on the Wii U (which has native HDMI). But it can't read the disks, you have to have the games on an SD card. Honestly, the only reason I even keep an original Wii around is to rip Gamecube disks. The Wii U has the Wii games covered, the Gamecube has the Gamecube games covered.

It's really good for running emulators on analog TVs though. Unlike the Wii U, the Wii's VI (Video Interface) can handle all sorts of whacky analog video timings.

But you would lose image quality. The d terminal used on the GCN wasn't designed for HD. It was just for the mini-dvd playback. You can always just get any of the other signal converters to display in HD. Even then if you have component or S-video/SCART it works fine for TVs on a digital signal once you set it for that in the System options. It mitigates the issue of having analog going through a newer digital signal output. No noise, no ghosting. My 360 is using analog on my HDTV via component and there's no issues whatsoever. It's similar to what the Wii mode does for Wii games on the Wii U if you're using an HDMI or HD component. Only difference is is that the settings are tied to the Wii U BIOS and thus being truly digital if you're using HDMI. And yeah, any system using a format with higher color resolution and count would be superior to that which is lower. Kinda even odd to mention it. It's obvious.
@StormsparkPegasus
@StormsparkPegasus 6 жыл бұрын
Well the HDMI adapter I have doesn't output HD. It outputs the Gamecube's native 480p over HDMI. So there is no input latency versus using something like converter/upscaler.

Hey John! This doesn’t have anything to do with the Wii but I have a technical question about the left joycon if the switch. So the analogue sticks of two joycons that I have, they are both left joycons, are acting up. I can’t control it anymore and random movement is sent to the console, playing is almost impossible. I don’t have these issues with my right joycons. I have to note that I bought my switch Day 1 back then in March 2017 alongside another joycons set, so I have a neon blue red and a grey joycon set. What could have caused this problem? And can it be fixed?

peel off the cover of the joycon. if the drifting continues, it's a janky spring which was unfortunately common in the first batch of the joycons. if it doesn't, then the cover simoly warped and putting it properly back on would do the trick

You can also tell from the orientation of the text on the front of the Wii whether it has Gamecube compatibility. If it's oriented so that it's legible when the Wii is standing on its side, it has Gamecube compatibility. If it's oriented so that it's legible when the Wii is lying down, it doesn't have Gamecube compatibility. This is useful if you can see the front of the Wii and that's it (display case, online auction, etc).

@@nolangray43 worst is subjective. The Switch provides a great portable experience. When your only real downtime is when you're out of the house, portable gaming basically becomes your only option. The Switch is basically a godsend to people like me. My PC is vastly more powerful, but I'm lucky if I get to game on it at all, the thing is basically strictly a workstation. Meanwhile I can easily squeeze in an hour a day on my Switch, often two or more, so if I want to actually play a game I'm basically forced to buy it on Switch.

The fun thing is that the "removed" GameCube support was just a modification to the drive and the absence of the ports/card reader. The ports/reader still have traces and solder points on the board and with a simple modification to the drive, it accepts and reads GC discs. Sadly I can't say whether or not the ports once soldered on work as well, as I seem to have the luck of getting "bricked" Wiis that are just Wiis that have a stuck drive. It will be fun to see if I can get a newer model Wii to natively run GC fully.
