When Bungie parted ways with Microsoft, the reason was Bungie thought Microsoft was too corporate. Then it signed up with Activision, an entity that was even more corporate than Microsoft. Eventually, Bungie allowed itself to be purchased by Sony, and now it's paying the price. You just got to appreciate the irony.

Pertinent to your observation about time, I’m one of those people who would love to game more but household and work related obligations generally leave me either too busy or too tired to play more than a few hours a week. As such, I am more than willing to pay a premium for a high-quality, well curated experience. Live service, meanwhile, is anathema to me. I have developed an active aversion to any game that feels like it doesn’t respect my time as a player, or worse still actively capitalizes on that time/money exchange via gacha, lootbox, or event based mechanics. If nothing else, the actual monetary cost to participate in those types of games will over time far exceeds a one-and-done game (or that’s before accounting for the cost of currency packs). I also dislike the pressure to participate at set times every day to optimize your involvement, when I have other things I need to be doing that take priority. Games should, for the vast majority of us, be a source of relaxation instead of an additional stressor.

I dropped off at the time The Taken King got released due to them showing their hand on how they just expected people to pay them to fix the mess they created. I logged in, found that some of my content had been vaulted and replaced, and the fixes they had promised we're essentially stuck behind a paywall. Thanks, but no thanks. Turned it off and didn't regret it. I admit I got lured in last Christmas season with the sales they had on the Witch Queen expansions. Picked it up, played it for a few hours, and realised it was the same old thing. Haven't looked back.

I've had to shave my backlog and just give up completing a bunch of games either due to time or loss of interest. Mine was huge, but is getting more manageable, thankfully. I realized games shouldn't be causing this kind of work or planning just to try to play. For anyone with a large backlog I would recommend just dropping games off. It may feel like a waste, but it may help you more than you thought.

As most publications reviewed solely Blue Rescue Team and treated Red Rescue Team as an unloved step child. Some were even surprised that the second screen was hardly utilized. Sony buying out Bungie seemed like it might have been for half live service experience, half knee-jerk reaction to a certain MSFT aquisition (might have been Activision/Blzzrd since they also have Crash and Spyro, which Sony used to have). Somebody should have told Sony that Bungie's track record was getting pretty bad after they went independent. The signs were definitely there and live service games rarely see much success nowadays since they eventually turn predatory or even get shutdown by year 3 or 4.

Most AAA 3rd party releases skip Nintendo, so we don't know how much revenue from games they get versus Sony or Microsoft. Consoles are very complex and sales alone are a misleading figure. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue team on NSO would be a bigger deal to me if the remake had not come out 4 years ago. I know not everyone will agree with me, but I think Rescue Team DX is almost across the board an improvement over the original Red/Blue Rescue Team outside of the pixle art art style being more appealing to me. I just didn't really vibe with PMD 1's story that much. Blue Rescue team is probably my 3rd or 4th favorite of the 4 games. Its not bad and I still like it, but every other game has some things that I like better. I respect it for being the start of a series that I love, but I don't think its the best entry point into the series in current year. If you haven't played any of the PMD games and have the NSO expansion pass, its definitely worth giving it a try. But its definitely got some "first game" jank and clunkiness to it.

"Won"? Let's break it down. The PS2 doesn't count since nearly everyone who bought it wasn't even a gamer, and Xbox would have outsold if it could play DVD's out the box. The Wii outsold the PS3 and Microsoft generated more revenue than Sony that generation because of Xbox Live Gold. The Switch outsold the PS4 and Microsoft advanced gaming in many avenues, such as GamePass, which isn't taken into account via console sales alone. The PS5 is an utter failire compared to what GamePass Ultimate offers in 2024 and ths Switch 2 will erase it clean likely, and Sony has been forced to port their supposedly amazing exclusives to PC. Sony has never "won" when you look at it beyond the surface level other than maybe the PS1.

I truly hope that Intel doesnt can their GPU division. We need competition in that segment and they are on the cusp of creating their next gen of gpus that could do that.

They've made a lot of progress on the drivers, and XeSS and their ray tracing capabilities are already better than FSR and RDNA3. There's a lot of potential there, but they really cooked themselves over the Raptor Cove issues, at a time when their CPU division wasn't doing so hot as is. There's too many duopolies in hardware. We badly need more competition.

In case people haven't realized it yet, the game industry is crashing right now. These are record layoffs that haven't happened since the 1980's.

@@Matanumi Its not even just tech industries. Loads of places are having layoff. Theres a recession happening, as you say. I work in fashion and we just had a bunch of redundancies. We had the same issue too. We saw record sales over Covid so hired loads of new staff, then those sales died right off once everyone could go outside again and now we are having to cut back again.

Actually, they layoffs are because of a hiring strategy where companies hire a bunch of employees for a specific time frame and lay them off afterwards. The narrative that the entire industry is failing is false. Eastern companies and eastern branches of companies are fine.

The Bungie/Sony fiasco is like 99% Bungie’s fault. It’s completely the result of Bungie’s toxic leadership and management. It sucks that 220 people were let go as a result. It’s good that Sony were able to move some of the employees. Hopefully, Sony can improve Bungie.

Interesting PMD Blue was omitted, obviously GBA more easy to emulate. Makes me wonder if the Switch 2/Pro will have a DS/3DS eShop and possibly a WII U eShop, and hardware with a flip up dual screen for handheld? Or if Switch 2 will also let you put Joy Cons on the side of a portrait mode tablet to emulate a Mega DS with screen on top of screen. Lets also pray for a Wind Waker 4k port.

Can we just go back to how things were during Xbox 360 ps3 era? Maybe this will save the industry. Physical media that played right out of the box. No hour long day one downloads etc… companies have gotten way too greedy
