Something that wasn’t mentioned here is the notch on the bottom of the joycons on the colored area. They always show the joycons entering the Switch at angle, bottom first. It is likely that there is a nub or hook that grabs that notch, which also helps hold the joycons in place.

The Joycon pin connector looks to be slightly offset, away from the Nintendo logo. This would ensure a poka-yoke ("mistake proof") style of connection, making it impossible to insert incorrectly. Additionally, if I were personally engineering these things to be magnetically coupled, I would orient the magnetic poles to align only when the controllers are the right way round. Pure speculation but I would not be surprised if Nintendo have thought of this too.

IMO the fact that the joy-con strap is hollow is the biggest indicator that the joy-cons have the rumored mouse functionality. There wouldn’t be a reason to make it hollow unless you were trying to design it so that the strap doesn’t block any sensors on the controller when in use.

It would make sense for Nintendo to double down on the IR cameras. A lot of games that could've made good use of it (like Mario Party) likely didn't because only half of all joycon have an IR sensor. It could also come into play in a successor to Ring Fit. That game's titular ring relied on the IR sensor to not only register your heartbeat but also register compression on the ring. The ring itself is a piece of plastic. Adding another IR camera to the leg-strap could greatly enhance its sensitivity and open up the possibility for more types of exercise.

8:20 I wonder why they didn't use Pogo pins. Tablets use them for accessories connections like keyboards on the iPad and they're both fairly shallow/flush and durable. I also don't think most people's concerns are with duty cycle wear and tear, Nintendo probably took that into considering when designing the Joycon attachment mechanism and materials they picked for that connection pin. Damage will probably come from accidents, and curious little fingers. Both issues the Pogo pins excel at mitigating.

I have zero worries about the toughness of a nintendo product. They clearly have made the needed design changes . Even the Switch Oled was evidence of that already. No more wobbly joycons that wear out from sliding on and off. No more stick drift, it has Hall Effect analog sticks which was also leaked. The kickstand is even better than the Oleds ,much easier to open and gives it a fresh clean look. The powder coat paint matte finish is excellent, they did that with the DS lite and it felt amazing. I do not like flat joycons that's my only negative. Thumb cramping horrible shape ,ugh . I will have to get a satisfy grip . Also since it has hall effect sticks, it should be the only upgrade .

It's possible that they decided that both Joy-Con should be able to do everything the other one can do. People have long complained that they're paying the same amount for either Joy-Con when the one on the right is more feature-rich.

I'm about to blow your mind. What if they DID implement the scroll wheel shoulder buttons, not a physical wheel but instead the shoulder buttons are touch sensitive and you can run your finger along them to scroll. Them being longer/around the whole corner of the joycon would also facilitate this functionality AND it would mean that the joycon in mouse mode would have a scroll wheel of sorts just like a computer mouse, this means that the scroll wheel controls in games on pc can carry over one to one. Also this functionality would obviously be available when the joycon are not in mouse mode as well for use in games in general i.e. menu navigation etc.

BTW you can calculate magnetic strength vs weight, so they can very easily work out a magnetic system what won't accidentally fall off.

There actually is a small gap in some shots where you can see the accent colors from the controllers. But they are incredibly narrow.

I like the idea that point and click games, RTS, and other games might have been more intuitive with a "mouse" and a pointer on screen.

Dual mouse gaming reminds me of the Commodore Amiga which supported multiplayer mouse gaming. Rampart and The Settlers could be played in splitscreen with both players having mouse control.

18:18 - Bet the instructions advise against holding like that. That's what I call "your own problem for carrying your Switch2 like a bag of chips"

16:05 It's good to see Nintendo considering repairability by including an automatic screw collector. 😂
