remember back in the original show when orochimaru pretended to be the kazekage and killed the third hokage? This was the kazekage that he killed and took his place and it was gaara's father. If gaara's father was never killed then the sand probably wouldnt have tried to attack the leaf cause they thought orochimaru was the kazekage and were following his orders.
