Just in case there was any confusion, Hanzo was only able to defy Kabuto for a little while when he wasn't paying full attention. By the time Kabuto realized what was up and decided to remove Hanzo's personality and take full control, Hanzo had already released the poison to paralyze his body.

Hanzo wasn't necessarily a bad guy... His problem though was that in his later life he got.. EXTREMELY paranoid.. and as a result opened himself up to manipulation from Danzo... Danzo made him think that the Akatsuki was trying to overthrow him... but before that... he held beliefs that would of worked well with the original Akatsuki... He just got lost on the road of life...

When I was first introduced to Hanzo I thought he was yet another Danzo. But after this battle, I realized he was much more, or at least used to be much more. He is one to be respected both in skill and character.

I wish we got to see how powerful Hanzo really was before he lost his way, stopped honing his skills, and got paranoid about losing power. We saw short glimpses with the three Sannin and in the Mifune flashback, but never the full thing. Not only that, but I would have liked to see excluding the main characters who could have actually defeated him back then. First Hokage and Madara come to mind.

It's a bit of a pity that we didn't get to see Hanzo go all out with ninjutsu, but what we got was still one of my favorite encounters of the entire war. That Pain cameo was also very enjoyable for a fan like me.

If you want to know a little bit of his skill set He seems quite skilled with any weapon but he's used the kusarigama(chain and scythe) since he was a child. He also seems to be quite skilled with kayakujutsu, the art of fighting with explosive tags, he has a technique where he hides a bunch of explosive tags just beneath the surface of the ground and can detonate them, this move pretty much crippled nagato to my knowledge He of course has ibuse and his poison sac. One thing he does which most other characters don't seem to take advantage of is the summoning and reverse summoning techniques, where he can summon himself to ibuse or ibuse to himself. He also has apparent skill with the body flicker technique. The body flicker combined with his summoning techniques pretty much let's him teleport himself and ibuse all around the battlefield, he even managed to catch orochimaru off guard by (I presume) using body flicker and summoning ibuse behind orochimaru, giving the appearance of teleportation I don't know all his nature's but I know he has fire and water release, considering ibuse being able to use earth I wouldn't be surprised if he could use earth aswell

I love that Hanzo has earned a place of respect with you. He fought for it unwillingly. He had his own set of ideals that rivaled his opponents, and he wouldn't go against that. Even if it was jutsu'd into him. He made his own way out. Hanzo is a badass I'm legend and experience. He fought and named the legendary sanin, then refused battle when it was unnecessary to his goal. What a samurai sans shinobi!

Hanzo didn't really break free of the jutsu. Some of the reanimated villains fought of their own accord so Kabuto didn't feel the need to control them. However, when Hanzo poisoned himself Kabuto tried to take back control but Hanzo's body was paralyzed so Kabuto couldn't force him to move. He's definitely a great character thoo.

Thing about Naruto is villains are so complex. No such thing as the good or bad guy, just different life experiences, ideologies and pain. To Nagato, Hanzo was the most evil person alive. But really Hanzo was protecting a nation bullied by the 5 great nations. He desparately desired peace. When he heard of a start up organisation protecting his village (The Akatsuki) he was happy. However, Danzo told him they were evil and just trying to destroy the Hidden Rain. Hanzo believed Danzo because Danzo was a high ranking member of one of the great nations Hanzo was trying to make peace with. Between Danzo and Akatsuki, Hanzo had to believe the evil ones were the Akatsuki because if it was Danzo his nation was screwed. Years of pain and suffering made it easy for Hanzo to think the Akatsuki were evil because he started thinking there was no one with convictions like him left, throw in some forged intel and fake promises from Danzo and it was a wrap. Same applies to Danzo, he fought for his village in a way he believed was right. He acknowledged from a young age he was not as gifted in protecting the village as Hirzuen (Lord Third) was, because of this he created his own 'Dark' way of protecting the village (Thus his analogy of a tree, with roots above/underground referencing Hiruzen/himself). Same applies to Pain and every village - they're complex. The closest thing to evil is Orochimaru, but I'd even class him as mad/crazy not inately evil and he even changes a lot throughout the series (Can't mention because of spoilers but you know what I mean).

Gaara’s father issues will have to wait, it’s Samurai vs Ninja first. As paranoid as Hanzo was in his later years when he abandoned his convictions, the man was metal as fuck, the guy has a literal gland of poison in him! And he leaves Kabuto’s control with a middle finger to his controller performing the Samurai act of Seppuku. It’s a fitting explanation of Hanzo’s demise and defeat too, the dull blade breaks easily. Remember that Yahiko mentioned Danzo was in on his murder too, fucking Danzo. One’s will can defy Kabuto, but they have to be ultra powerful, I mean Hanzo was stronger than all three Sannin after all.
