Type 2 SPDs are great, but i hate the insane prices these manufacturers charge. They are about $5 in MOVs, some LEDs and a plastic box. Even basic models now go for over $100. They're marked up 20x+.

And with the latest NEC code release requiring Surge Protection devices in homes they have ZERO incentive to drop the price any time soon.

Beauty of a job there! Beefy SPD, and wired as close as possible to the panel entrance. Do you put one at service disconnect, too? I’ve done both when super max desired.

I’m hoping that the power is off. I just can’t work in a panel without my black Milwaukee cut resistant gripping gloves. They’re shear enough to pick up small parts and protect me from cuts and scratches. I also like the extra protection from shock. I know that they’re not safety gloves, but it doesn’t hurt to have a little extra protection.

I hope you noticed the panel cover screw on the bottom left was right in front of the surge protector. When you put the panel cover on that screw would have penetrated the device.... Details matter!!!!!

ALWAYS blunt tip screws on panel covers... so nothing is getting penetrated. He likely cut the screw shorter to not interfere with the SPD.

Locating the breaker as close as possible to incoming power is GOOD...but not CRITICAL due to the extremely large gauge ( or "ampacity"...if you will) of the bus bar. However, keeping the leads from the FS140 to the breakers SHORT is indeed critical, as every inch added that is not necessary for the install.....increases the voltage threshold of protection ( the VPR rating). Think of VPR this way, it is the LIMIT of surge allowed to pass through. If you bought the FS140 with 600 volts of pass-through allowance during a surge.....why increase it to 700 or 1000 because of too many inches of additional lead length? So.....yes, locating the FS140 close to the incoming main breaker is GOOD, but not CRITICAL. The buss is enormous in comparision to breaker location and wire leads used....and the location of the protected elements (TV, laptops etc)....are VERY far away with VERY SMALL gauge wire in comparison......the electricity will take the path of least resistance and the long runs of to the equipment being protected helps in this regard. Hint.....twisting the leads 1 twist per inch, or even laying them tightly together in a straight line using zip ties..... will improve the impendence and will give you improved performance just like short leads will. All this confirmed not only by what I thought I knew.....but with talks with Siemens CS. Cheers.

As a service Electrician, I have found a large percentage of the breakers that the surge devices are connected to tripped when I open the panel for something unrelated. Has anybody else been finding this? If the breaker is tripped the audible alarm does not work either.

Can you do an inline surge protector? I struggle a little but to understand how a surger protector protects the whole system.
@Byron88
@Byron88 Жыл бұрын
You can't put devices in line because that would be series wiring, it's in parallel because essentially all a surge protector is , is a device that dumps excess voltage to ground/neutral , for example line to neutral is nornally 120v so this device for example (I don't know the exact rating of the MOVs in it) if voltage on the bus bars exceeds 135v itll just start dumping it straight to ground/neutral to dissipate excess voltage

Great video, as usual. You might have mentioned a little bit about what surge/lightning is. It’s a stupidly high voltage but incredibly short event. Voltage so high (millions at the contact point on or near the home, but so short in duration that inductance of copper impedes that from actually getting all the way into panel. And so short that the spd can absorb the current that the voltage does induce long before that 20 amp breaker even knows what’s happening.

That's considered a "spike" not a "surge". And I have a hard time believing that little junk can stop 140,000 amps, but maybe. I wouldn't wanna test it

When you install it along the edge like this, doesn’t it risk contact with the cover screw? I’m so jealous of the panel location. Wow - much better than my garage.

A typical lightning flash is about 300 million Volts and about 30,000 Amps so that ought to protect them X3 at least. Everything can be replaced except for life and data. Insurance should protect them financially.

If you have a generator and transfer panel, should the surge protector be put in the transfer panel where the utility service enters?
@brianpiper3188

Call me crazy, but you could eliminate a big chunk of the code book by integrating surge, arc, and ground fault protection directly into the panel. We have access to smart breaker panels already, so why not just come full circle with the safety integration and make a new panel standard? I guess I feel like Tesla in the Edison company, why not try something different. Tesla revolutionized the grid.
@RJ-ej1nr
@RJ-ej1nr Жыл бұрын
SPDs get used up, and GF+AF break and need replacing. If integrated into the panel, you'd want to make it modular to deal with that, which puts you right back to the existing method of SPD/GF/AF plugging into a breaker slot. Having multiple circuits covered by a combined GF/AF means a trip takes out them all, which makes diagnosis harder and nuisance impact way up.

OK so I have an interesting question and has to do with wearing rings or jewelry on the body while do work in HV or any electrical panel, I noticed you have a ring on your finger which means your taken :) BUT is your ring a special nonmetallic type of ring.? I work in a lower voltage type area but since I use my fingers to feel in live circuits, I always take my ring off (single not taken finger) so I don't short something out. But still curious if there is special rings or jewelry for this purpose, hope this make sense :)

Most of the time you’d just install a 3P variant for the voltage setup you’re dealing with. Using one SPD per leg would be a little more rare.
