Incredible! I love the sound of my cobbled-together, cheap plywood, full range DIY open baffles, I can only imagine how these perform. So beautiful too.

Good inspiration for a new project with some drivers that i have over........... Bass: SB 15OB350 Might try SLOB ala Nelson Pass or Graham (Slot Loaded Open Baffle) Midbass: Vintage Electro Voice EVM12L. Might try to slot load it or use a center piece that make the cone not act as a horn. Brings down the 2 kHz peak. Tweeter: Horn loaded GRS planar

A pair of Hypex FA253 plate amps with the internal digital crossovers would really transform these into accurate speakers. You could equalize the low bass, fix the open baffle upper bass bump and dip and use proper high order crossovers to avoid vertical off axis response anomalies.

And adjust for the inevitable differences in sensitivity of the drivers once their responses are flattened

I'd use a single-ended tube amp with these. If a speaker can "wake up" with only the first watt they' will sound more detailed than any low sensitivity system hooked to 100 watts.

Very good presentation! Thanks. If you are using LSPcad, I have found the simulations very helpful to position drivers and size the baffle. And I also found the combination of several different bass drivers can mitigate the uneven response and cancellation that occurs with open baffles. One issue that arises is too much output at the 100-200hz range, and then the bass output falls off below 40-50hz. There are ways to mitigate that effect as well.

I'm a big friend of 2 1/2 way constructions, and you created a very nice one as it seems! Wonder if using two more wideband 12" with higher Q and 1. Order instead of 15" 4. order would bring further benefits in step response, or is my guessing just a theoretical one?

Gorgeous speaker! and end result. Open baffle speakers are in my future... Having owned Maggies and Quad ESLs for 40 years, along with a mix of cone speakers. I do love open dipole sound, with (line-source) propagation in the room. Designing and building high power (mostly) MOS-FET, with a few ICE and Hypex amps in the works... power is not / never an issue... I want efficiency and sensible loading to better mate with my OTL amps (sitting idle, so much of the time). With a few large listening spaces, these speakers would work very well. I am shocked by *how affordable these speakers (actually) are* Hmmmm???

Can I ask what the sensitivity measurement is on these babies? I didn't see that on the product page.

Development is still ongoing but in its current form its flat from 150Hz to 5kHz, however I will crossing much lower than that at around 600Hz to the ES-450 above it. I can send you preliminary test data if you email me. joseph_crowe@josephcrowe.com

Hi Joseph Excellent design …. A very big thank you for sharing it. Fairly sure some others have done hybrid OB-horns before - but your approach is the best I’ve seen The larger rear cover for the compression driver, lowering Fs by that much ~ 35%(!) EXCELLENT Were you able to estimate the size of the drop in Fs in advance of making it, based on what factor/s? Cheers

A really nice looking OB project. However an only horn I can look at naked is Altec 3x5 ;) This could be an option to offer some “dust cover” (from edge to edge) for the horn. PS For some reason I find your horns look like Giger’s sculptures. ))

Curious how you got around the Open Baffle Peaking issues with only a 1st order crossover? Did you actually measure the final response? May have at least partially found the answer in your Bass cabinet video. I guess by rolling off the upper end of the 15" driver, you bring down the Peaking?

I would love to know why 2.5way is it because he already had those drivers? (that 10")?or is it truly better than a 3way?
@ahnenpost5237
@ahnenpost5237 11 ай бұрын
it's because the 10" also contributes to the lowest frequencies - he mentioned that. Then, he can no longer claim it to be a 3 way.

Hi 👋, They look very nicely made, it’s a shame that you didn’t pay some actual music through them, from classical Toccata in D Minor, Led , Z , Kashmir , Nordic & Viking folk, and war music, there is not many speakers 🔊 that can perform well to this type of music, especially when it comes to organ music, D minor Toccata, I built my transmission line loudspeaker cabinets around 40 years ago, and I just recently replaced the drivers, with SEAS 8” subwoofer, and 3” Tweeters, the line is around 14 Ft and fire out the bottom, And they stand approximately 5 1/2 feet in height, And I’ve been told they sound amazing, Very impressed with your cabinet work, open baffle , speakers, please share some music, Phil from the moulin France
