Speaker of the House of Representatives Tony Smith came down hard on both sides of the House during Question Time, taking aim at the prime minister and treasurer, and throwing out 11 MPs.
A raucous Question Time saw the speaker of the House rein in members from both sides including Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Treasurer Josh Frydenberg who he said “scripted” his answers beforehand.
“If he (Mr Frydenberg) wants to give a general character assessment of those opposite, he'll need to find another time to do it throughout the parliamentary day, no matter how much he's scripted it beforehand,” Mr Smith said.
The speaker held no pleasantries for the government and the prime minister when trying to steer Mr Morrison to answer a question put to him by Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese.
When Mr Morrison said he was “happy to do that” after Mr Smith told him to stay on topic, the speaker lashed him saying “I don’t care if you’re happy or not, you need to return to the question”.
The fiery Question Time also saw the removal of 11 MPs from both parties including Liberal MP Tim Wilson and Shadow Energy Minister Chris Bowen.

Its pathetic that the elected members of parliament don't have the wherewithal to conduct themselves appropriately. Their contemptuous behaviour is reflective of a lack of respect for both their constituents and their role. If we paid them in proportion to their professionalism (let alone performance) all of the crap would cease immediately. Funny how that works.

Do they lose anything when they're forced out of the house?
@orsomethingorno
@orsomethingorno 3 жыл бұрын
No. The only time they lose anything is when they are "named" -- a much more serious offence, which requires a minister to move a motion to suspend the member for 24 hours, taking away their vote and pay. This is voted on (without debate). If that vote is lost, it is regarded as a de facto vote of no confidence in the speaker. In 1975, speaker Jim Cope resigned on the spot after he named a government minister and the government refused to put the motion to suspend him to a vote. In 2011 with a hung parliament, speaker Harry Jenkins named an opposition MP, and several crossbenchers joined the Coalition to oppose the suspension (likely taking an opportunity to assert their independence from the government they supported), so the vote was lost. Coalition leader Abbott, a little shell-shocked at his own parliamentary mischief accidently succeeding, immediately moved a motion of confidence in the speaker, which was accepted unanimously, and the speaker did not resign. Ultimately, though, a number of months later he quit the job to re-enter partisan politics, and a renegade ex-Liberal MP (Slipper) was installed as speaker due to the parliamentary convenience, until his own sex scandals proved too move to bear.
