@YoshiP interview: The problem was not that they tried something new but that they were abysmal in doing that. If anything it's the opposite. There is nothing really new in DT's MSQ. It was the same as always and living memory / Solution 9 was more or less the ancient story all over again. They couldn't even let go of the scions for one expansion and then said that it was a hard decision because of the fans when the biggest problem was that the scions where handled as an afterthought just for the trusts. Otis, Wuk Lamat, Zoral Ja and co would have been great companions for DT instead of the scions with only Krile there with us. Would have made the betrayal of the later far more personal. Instead we got one character for almost all cutscenes, lobotomized scions and shafted Krile. Not even Wuk Lamat herself was the problem but the handling of her. I would have been fine with being a mentor for her if there was mentoring involved. I would even say we went a step back in how the WoL is characterised and presented. We went from great different dialogue choices and facial expressions back to ARR level of nodding and standing around. I still remember how torn my WoL looked in EW throughout the story and especially in the world unsundered for example. The characters have new bones for the face and expressions but it isn't used anywhere. Honestly I am kinda pissed that even after all this time YoshiP can't even admit that they missed the mark in some aspects but keeps repeating his phrase of "iTs A kNeW sToRy" or "YoU jUsT dIdN't SeE hOw GrEaT wuK iS" again and again when even ARR set a better example of introducing a world or how Shb or HW did a better job of writing a Deuteragonist. Where is the humble producer that freely admitted mistakes and delayed EW because he felt the story wasn't good enough yet? I am seriously disappointed in him at this point and the terrible work the writers gave in this expansion till now. At least he knows that some things of the MSQ belong to side stories. Edit: The whole "what side quest would be important to lore and what not" is a useless question. i am sorry to say that. Even a simple side quest can tell important world lore. That's the job of the writers. DT also doesn't need more introduction to it's tribes and culture than other regions. India is also not often represented and EW made the eastern region interesting and easy to follow without treating us like children. What people mean with things that can go to sidequests is stuff like the Pelupelu trader thing explained again and again or the Hanu Hanu reed culture. Those things are already told visually. No need to repeat those things in every single cutscene.

talking about how other cultures in this world were built up before we went there does make me wonder if they should have had us visit Meracydia before Tuliyolal, since it already has more links and ties and build up, and started dropping in more talk about Tuliyolal over the course of that adventure. Even the first got built up more before we went there thanks to Ardbert's patchquests.

The issue with Dawntrail wasn't the lore or pacing. Those were fine. It was the way they were presented. Having Wuk Lumot as the eyes of the world to present to the player is the issue. If it was Erenville, Krile, or Koana i do not think we'd have the issues we are seeing. A good character can save a bad story but a bad character can damage a good story. Wuk Lomat is a weak to bad character. By her presenting the story to the player, people either tune out and are not interested, or try to figure out why it doesn't "click", The constant positivity and failure to even consider that Wuk is weak to bad is what is hurting the game. Pivot to focus on the stronger characters, Bakool Ja Ja, Krile, Erenville, Koana.

Yoshi P dismissing valid criticism in the terrible writing made it even funnier when FFXIV didn't win best community support at the Game Awards.
