I watched this video almost a year ago, before I moved to Finland. At the time I didn't understand anything he says in this video. I wondered how it would be to understand it. Also, I wondered if I would come to know the streets he is going through, trying to imagine myself living in that environment and thinking that I would most likely end up somewhere else. Now, not only I understand his Finnish but I also recognize those streets. I biked that path from Espoo to Salmisaari many times now. Such weird feeling looking back at what my thoughts were and seeing my plan to move here come to fruition! Things are overall going better than expected.

Those sayings and expressions are sometimes funny, because words often have several meanings in the other language, which completely changes the meaning. Strike(lower) the flag = Laske lippu = calculate the ticket The spruce (tree) is on fire = Kuusi palaa = number six (6) returns

wow luke i must say that for someone with anglosaxon language background, your finnish is excellent in terms of accent. That is usually super hard for english talkers. You may not know all the terms yet, but that comes with time - you seem to have mastered the most hard problem already, you pronouce stuff as a finn would. I dont know how many years you needed for that, but i know people from germany and england who are more than a decade here, and theyre sometimes painful to listen to ;) not so with you.

I’m half Finnish and half Korean. I only speak English. Go figure. I did learn how to speak Spanish. I was working as an RN in New Mexico. It was a necessity. I should try and learn both Finnish and Korean. Good for you!! My uncle recently passed away. They are going to engrave sousi on his gravestone. I think it means Finnish pride? I’m not sure.

I would say that you have great a potential for achieving near native speech. Your pronunciation is nearly perfect, this is one of the hardest parts to nail for english speakers. Your vocabularity is excellent. Your conjugation is very good, but with occational slip ups. Your use of idioms is.... a little unnatural. Just a matter of learning the finnish versions, shouldn't be too hard. Your use of shortened speech terms is almost nonexistant. You speak what we'd call booktongue. Perfecting this is not recquired for native speech and is arguably also among the hardest to nail down. Overall I'd say your mastery of the Finnish languange is excellent+, closing in on superb. I'd encourage doing this more as only experience will allow you to improve your weakest areas and you're not gonna learn native use with just studying. In the end however, your Finnish is perfectly understandable as is, which is the only job a languange has.

Oh my god would probably be "Voi luoja!". Luoja is like god but literally creator. But you speak really good Finnish, most of the real work is done. Now you just need to take the beast by the horns and speak. Edit: One thing I noticed which is minor and easy to fix.. You said Tänään on torstaiNA. And Huomenna on perjantaiNA. You don't need to inflect in those scenarios. Just Huomenna on torstai. I think the -na/-nä is used when you would say On friday or on thursday in English. (I feel like a grammar nazi now, but really this is just a minor fix!!)
