I guess I can jot notes right here in your video. This is very similar to gefallen (etwas gefällt mir) in German, piacere (mi piace qualcosa) in Italian, and нравиться in we-know-which. Also gustar (me gusta algo) in Spanish.

The rule similar to Italian and Spanish 'piacere ' and ' gustar'. In my language, Polish, it's also similar but the word order is different, for example ' Podoba mi się ten kolor '.

A more direct translation for this verb is "to please". Examples are "it pleases me" (I like it) or "we please them" (They like us). It is used only for very specific contexts in English, and is related to "piacere" in Italian. The polite expression "please" in English is an outgrowth of this.

Two observations: 1. подобатися (to be liked) is very likely a relative of подібний (alike/similar) taking i/о alternation into account, and the word "like" covers both of those meanings, that's a an interesting convergent semantic development we have in some Indo-European langs 2. there is (as I can judge) no nonreflexive form подобати, and exactly same thing happened in Russian: there is нравиться (to be liked), but no нравить. It seems that even in Polish where "sie" is still a particle, "podobać" is never used without "sie"

There is an easier way to understand this, I think. The same construction exists in Spanish ... me gustas = I like you, literally "you like to me". This makes no sense in english, but if you substitute the word "likeable" for the reflexive verb it's easier to get it. So, "you are likeable to me, and I am likeable to you". What's more, it also uses the remnant dative case in english (e.g. to me, to her). Hope that helps!

You could’ve explained this by comparing it to the English verb “to please”-This pleases me ≈ Це мені подобається.

Not as good a comparison as one might think. It's an active voice English construct and hence no cues for why you'd need the dative case in Ukrainian. I don't see what's wrong with explaining it the way she did.

Part of the reason you are getting confused is because you started off by mis-labelling the meaning of the verb in English. It would have been MUCH less confusing for all had you described it not as "to like", but as "to be liked". This makes it exactly the same as the Russian equivalent as нравиться and I, for one, would not have needed watch beyond the first minute or so.
