Good question and good idea! Honestly, these days we use 'I am hooked on' when we really really like a TV show, or some kind of entertainment. For example: "I saw 1 episode of that new Netflix show and I was hooked". More seriously, we use 'hooked on' for drug addiction too. Such as: "He is hooked on cigarettes and he can't quit." So I wouldn't use this phrase to talk about phones actually. Hope that makes sense!

Нi guys, you're making an amazing duet. I'm so excited I've come across your videos. After watching the first one I've subscribed to your channel. Now I see that natives' everyday speech is quite plain and clear without kind of sophisticated vocabulary we learn at school. Thank you so much for teaching real English we can use in the most common situations. Looking forward to your new videos.

Hey, teachers 😊! I think we're all addicted to our phones. But children are much more than adults usually. I have some sort of immunity to this kind of addition (it's simply my age, when I got my first mobile, it was in 2006). At that time I gave birth to my second son and was so happy to have a new phone, so I could listen to music and so on, while my baby was sleeping. And these days I try to cut off my time on social media, and it's hard because of all these things that you've described in this lesson. So, I think it's our reality and we can take all positive things and try to avoid the other stuff. Thanks a lot for this great lesson 👏. I love your style of teaching ❤, it's super cool!

Fruitful lesson once again thanks for this. Could you please tell me the meaning of Act For because it has so many meanings.
@highlevellistening
@highlevellistening 28 күн бұрын
"Act for" is not a phrase I use very often, honestly. The most common case is when you're in court and a lawyer "acts for" you. You can see an example here: www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/us/definition/english/act-for#:~:text=act%20for-,phrasal%20verb,continuing%20to%20act%20for%20him. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any other common uses.

I think my tablet usage is too much as well:-) I do not like that and trying to cut back on the usage of it sometimes. Though, I justify myself that I use this for English learning:-) I check different you tube vedoes , watch movies in English and so on. Luckily, I am not into social media and they are not addictive to me, though sometimes can just scroll Instagram reels, so I got that :-)actually, the problem can be full storage , the internet lagging , bad voice quality and so on , that really get on my nerves😂

Good question! I would say that: "I can't help being drawn into my phone" feels a little more conversational. But: "I couldn't help but be drawn into my phone." is something I would read in a book. I hope that makes sense!

Hi , Is it pick up used for a person? I mean pick up your manager I wanna see him.
@highlevellistening
@highlevellistening Ай бұрын
You can use "pick up" to mean "to collect" someone from another place, usually with a car or a vehicle. For example, if you are waiting at the airport. I can drive my car to you and [pick you up], then drive us home together. But if you are just in an office, a cafe, or a store and the manager is in another room, I would say: - "Can you [go and get] your manager. I want to see him." - "Could you [go and find] your manager. I want to see him." Hope that helps!

@highlevellistening
@highlevellistening Ай бұрын
Good question - we can definitely used "obsessed with" For example: "I'm obsessed with my phone, I need to use it less." Obsessed with has a negative feeling. It's something we want to stop doing, or it's a bad habit. BUT, you can also use it to talk about a singer, a TV show, or a celebrity that you really really really enjoy. "I'm obsessed with Olivia Rodriguez's new album, I've listened to it at least 20 times."
