Here I am spearfishing at Bear Lake. It took me a while to get into the groove of things, but I figured it out and caught some carp. Enjoy!

Thanks for watching my vid! I'm using a 6' fiberglass pole spear. With the interchangeable tips it's about 7' long. I've wrapped in yellow electrical tape to prevent splinters from getting into my hand. I also used heat-shrink tubing. I wrapped some small nylon cord around the pole to use as a grip. I recently dropped the hand grip down lower on the pole, because I upgraded my band to a power band which is much stronger, thus I don't need to stretch it as far.

This looks incredibly fun... Couple of questions - I've heard that carp taken from cleaner and cooler water (like Bear Lake) tend to taste much better. Do you eat them or throw them out? Also, how much do you think someone could expect to spend on all the gear when first getting into spearfishing? Thanks!

I usually dive between 15 and 20 feet. The deepest I dove was thirty feet at Flaming Gorge. I don't like to dive too deep when it's murky, because it creeps me out, however when it's clear I love to dive deeper.

I was looking at all the regulations involving spearfishing in reservoirs and lakes in Utah, and I don't see Bear Lake on the list. Is it legal or illegal to spearfish in Bear lake?
@kookooDragonballs5 жыл бұрын
Bear Lake is not mentioned in the list of lakes where you can spear fish for game fish, however on page 14 under, "Additional Spearfishing rules" the Utah Fishing 2019 Guidebook says, "At all waters open to angling-during their open seasons-you can underwater spearfish for carp." So, I have only ever spearfished for carp up there. 😊

Man I gotta try this. I just got back from spearfishing in Belize. I did not know we could do it here? What are the rules? Where do you get a hand spear?
@kookooDragonballs7 жыл бұрын
George Goates it's pretty awesome! All the rules and guidelines are found in the Utah fishing handbook. Most dive shops in Utah will carry hand spears.
@Kgoates7 жыл бұрын
Do you ever shoot anything other than carp? If so, where do you go?
@kookooDragonballs7 жыл бұрын
George Goates Deer Creek Reservoir is nice in the early mornings and in the springtime. they have some walleye up there. Flaming Gorge has also been a good place to go, although I've only been to Mustang Ridge Campground. Fish Lake in Central Utah is beautiful. They have muskie and trout, but they have stricter rules and a season on that lake. Of course there is Lake Powell which I have yet to go to, but from videos I have seen it looks great. I haven't been spearfishing in a couple years, so I would need to double-check all the regulations and rules as they seem to change a little bit every. :-) year.
@kookooDragonballs7 жыл бұрын
George Goates also there is Blue Lake in West Utah, South of Wendover. You are only allowed (as far as I know) to Spearfish the tilapia in that Lake and it's a thermal Lake. However, I would only go in the winter, springtime, or early summer, as the horse flies come out later on in the summer, and they bite. Most any lake in Utah is great in the springtime and early summer as the algae bloom will kick in mid-summer to late summer and visibility significantly drops.

Great Job on the carp spearing. The Utah Bass folks ask that you don't shoot the bass as we catch and release them. Still though great carp kills looks like fun.
@kookooDragonballs12 жыл бұрын
I purchased my pole spear at Dive Utah. I also recommend Sport Chalet at the Jordan Landing in West Jordan. They have a big selection of spearfishing gear. My pole spear cost about $20. The slip tip I'm using in the video cost about $40. The tips are more expensive than the pole. I wrapped my pole spear in yellow electric tape so as not to get fiberglass splinters and it adds a nice textured grip. I used heat shrink tubing on the ends and tightly wrapped some nylon rope for a grip.

i know what you mean i used a pole spear for years but since i up graded i haven't turned back. but the up side to a pole spear is that there fairly cheap (depends on what kind) and are easier to transport. the down side is range and speed. happy hunting! :)
@wtpearson11 жыл бұрын
You can get just as good of fish with a pole as a gun, you could probably use a larger pole spear, more power. A gun is definitely easier, and more power, but it is all about learning the mannerisms of your target and how to approach them so you can get a good, accurate shot. Keep at it, try different approaches, the more you do it the better your aim will get. Do you eat the carp? Or are they a nuisance fish?
@kookooDragonballs11 жыл бұрын
WT Pearson In Utah carp are considered a nuisance. I know that if I put enough seasoning on anything it'll taste good. ; ) But I don't eat them.
@wasfun2210 жыл бұрын
kookooDragonballs I personally wouldn't in a speargun just quite yet, because a pole spear forces you to get closer it teaches you how to stalk fish and how to place your shot. I would invest in a weight belt so you are neutral (makes diving way easier and smoother) and a good pair of fins (mako makes a great pair of budget fins) These should help your spearfishing much more than a gun, Also hope Utah will eventually let you shoot game fish to eat, the trash fish only puts a bad taste in my mouth, its so wasteful.
