Yes, you’re right on! I don’t think I’ve ever been offshore diving in February before this year. We had a great calm spell. It’s usually pretty rough- will actually be for the rest of the month it looks like. It was a haul but everyone seems to like these spearfishing vids! I was curious to dive this time of year out there as well, as the opportunity doesn’t arise often.

south florida spearfished here, yellow jack and lion fish make some of the best ceviche, an easy catch and cook on the spot meal. make sure to bring tortilla chips. pro tip, soak the onions in cold water to make them less pungent.

Lionfish are hands down my favorite fish to eat. Salt + pepper + light cayenne or youre favorite chili powder and saute in butter till golden both sides. Such a tasty fish it doesnt need alot of seasoning to be awesome.

I know it was not the shake down cruise for the (new) PANGA but going 60 miles out sure will let you know if there are any wrinkles in her. I was curious how much fuel you ended up using? You should carry the propane store with you just to have a hot meal to warm you up after a cold day of diving. You won't get fish any fresher!

Around 35 gallons, fuel consumption was definitely not as efficient as when I cruise a little slower but I never had to use the gas cans I brought.

I work in the oilfield, been a couple hundred mile offshore to the more remote platforms and seen some crazy creatures living off those rigs. Always been tempted to jump in the water with a speargun when my boss wasn’t looking!

Its good to keep some kitchen sheers in the boat. When you get this lion fish and brain them. Sheer off the spines before you put them in the cooler on ice. That way you don’t have to worry about the guys getting stabbed with venom every time the reach in And yea they are worth it. If people knew how good they were they would no longer be I invasive lol Kinda like those little on-shore puffer fish people leave them alone because they think that they are deadly but the species in Florida and Texas are not and you can pull thick lil filets off them the size of chicken tenders.
