@@codymcdaniel5466 appreciate it Cody! It was definitely wild to see so much going on. Didn’t even think about it in the moment, I was just worried about the fish tangling up. It probably would’ve been difficult to put a follow up shot because it kept fighting whenever I was it pulling up as well. Worked out though the cudas didn’t seem too interested.

Nice permit man! They are well known as "the spear breakers" due to their speed and strength. I had a few spears totally wrecked by permits in the past. The really big ones (50 pounds and above) are impossible to catch if you don't stone them!

Maybe it's a plant that either can't seed onto the surface of the rig at higher points because of the turbulence on the surface or gets eaten there. If its photosynthetic it seems strange that it thrives lower down where there is less light intensity

They are; there aren't any rules on them since they don't really ever get caught. Pompano are legal to spear as well. Snook are gamefish, permit and pompano are not. However, we were diving in federal water anyways.
