/ kevinthejames / neilcic We want to try and do some live or unedited podcasts, so Neil & Kevin did a quick, extemporaneous rap about special effects in... movies!

Forgive the NOS, black t-shirts, and general lack of format in this one.

You guys are good! It is impromptu, yall just chillin and we don’t want to stress u guys out too much with production all the time! Sorry for all the interrupting, Neil. I blame the caffeine and internet delay.

I love the camera quality difference, Neil is being really casual and your standing up making tons of hand gestures with leds in the back, Kevin really means it and Neils jus kinda vibing

Kevin pushing Neil to admit Robocop 2 is a solid 8 out of 10 is the stuff I live for.

I'm at about 42:30 so this might get covered but I think one reason we don't get impressed by effects anymore is because we've gotten to a point with cgi where it's so good that we can do most of the things that we want to do. So instead of "how did they did that?" it's more of an "of course they can do that"

Love this. Unedited is great, we like you guys for who you are. We don’t even notice any awkward pauses or lulls in conversation that might stand out to you guys.

I'm so glad you mentioned the rocket jump film school, "Why CG Sucks (except it doesn't)". That was in the back of my mind through the whole episode. So many effects and processes that people take for granted. I loved this episode so much.

The last special effects scene that really impressed me was the love scene in Blade Runner 2049. I don't know much about CG or editing so I don't know how technically impressive those effects were, but oh my god did the way those two actresses were layered over each other blow my mind.

Prometheus ... first time seeing it i honestly couldnt tell if the engineer was 100% CGI like the hulk or a really stuntman in makeup with maybe cgi face adjustments

In terms of CG, I think the last time modern movie effects really got me was the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network. Fincher did a fantastic job...maybe at the cost of pissing off the body double that was supposed to play a twin, but a great job nonetheless.

Really enjoy the face cam footage for the podcast. It might just a me problem, but I am more willing to watch/listen to a podcast if it has footage of the people talking. Unfortunately I have a back log of Gaurenteed Video Podcasts I haven't listened to yet.

I’m just glad that we finally reached CGI that looks photo real. The CGI in the 90s and 00s looked so laughably bad, it just took you out of the movie. Watch something like Kong: Skull Island, and it feels like you’re seeing actual giant monsters fighting, instead of CGI blobs or dudes in suits.

20:36 yeah but wasn’t mars attack supposed to look bad, I can’t take mars attack seriously I always assumed even at the time that it was made to look bad, they hired lots of comedy actors for it like Danny devito and all that jazz I thought it was a parody of the alien sci fi genre
