In the destiny segment you answered no to jerard’s question about if the harassment was caused by anything, I personally found that wack cuz as a destiny player there was a list of shit in the past few months that could’ve contributed to players harass the devs. The main one that comes to mind is when they said titans won’t get twilight garrison back, which I know caused death threats to be sent out. The raid being swapped to a Friday could have caused some stuff but I’m not sure on that one.

Having started the Game Awards years ago, I’m glad someone in the industry decided to give video games the recognition they deserve, as video games are an art form just as painting, sculpting filming, or photography. On top of that, E3 having been in limbo since Covid hit in 2020, he set the groundwork for the trend many other gaming companies have followed. With online only events like Gamscom, and the Summer games event 2022. Companies like Sony, Microsoft, Devolver, THQ Nordic, and Bethesda followed suit. It’s a great substitute when/if E3 returns.

I know that I'm more of a fan than others, but I can't believe nobody here brought up FFXIV to Ralphs question. Direct and constant communication with the community from Yoshi-P as DRAMATICALLY improved FFXIV and the community perception. They did their 72nd or 73rd just this week since a Realm Reborn launch. It is amazing and many more Devs could learn from this.

Quite a few studios do this well too. GGG behind Path of Exile do a lot of interviews, development manifestos and their dev streams ahead of every new content patch. Digital Extremes also do a lot of dev streams and community stuff, but I'd say their streams kinda fell off in bringing up the issues with the game and showing off their designs they are working on (most likely because they used to show or talk about things that would make it into the game 2-3 years later, so, very early prototypes). I heard Lost Ark dev streams are also a work of passion, but I haven't seen them, though, people compare them to FFXIV streams. With all that said, still, I think that YoshiP is the best at open communication with his community and Chris Wilson (GGG) being a close second.

Being a live service games is pretty obviously the distinguishing factor that strangely wasn't addressed in the conversation... they actually came so close when Lucy brought up how she views something like overwatch differently to the LOTR films... it's cause it's a live service evolving product that people are still interacting with on a daily basis...

This interview has given me a newfound respect for Geoff. I guess I never really thought about where he came from and how he got here, he always 'seemed' genuine and like a true fan of gaming, but to know now that he absolutely earned that and has been in the industry for that long...It's impressive and gives me a better understanding of why he is who he is to gaming and gamers. Also, his little "Lucy, what the fuck, come to Germany" was hilarious.

Intresting interview with Geoff Keighley, regarding his show i like the way that he is trying to take risk and push things further to make the show more interesting and "less generic" instead of those E3 moment with some cringe moments, looking at you Bethesda. Tho i also think that having those celebs is not necessarily a good thing imo, like don't get me wrong there is no need to gatekeep + you have some celebs that really like games but most of them will fake it and be like the "Hello, fellow kids" meme. Also ofc the E3 and his show are big ads for games ofc but his summer fest when we had ads for Black Adam, etc.. Didn't like it a bit and it took time for the show but i get it they have sponsors so i guess deal with it. Finally, and i think he knows that but there will be a decrease in terms of number of people watching the shows, E3 and his show and the Emmy awards and Oscar decline shown that. So i think people will be tired to see those show or will just wait the trailers to drop on YT

@@xNemesis_ I agree but I still think SGF is still in it's early stages and geoff holds more weight with developers than what e3 can get so I think it's really just a matter of what games are coming out that year and what announcements each party can get. I don't think Geoff is really worried about e3 cancelling out SGF unless e3 magically replicates the golden years of what it used to be.

Community interaction improving video game: -96, when Firaxis were creating Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, they had a BBS, where quite a few fans were VERY active. I remember one example where the community asked if it would be possible to get hot-seat functionality, and thus be able to "couch-PVP" using one computer. The Firaxis community manager said they didn't have that sort of thing planned, but would bring it up in meeting. Next day (or maybe after two days), we were told that they would try to add that. They also said that might be a way to implement play-by-email. And they DID put in those functions!

To answer the question about dev-customers communication, two examples were it significantly improved the product and sales: - Factorio. Wube is a model of communication, and what they build with their community is absolutely a key seller. - Subnautica. Even more direct, if you watch the Subnautica post-mortem the devs say it almost verbatim: communication with their customers not only saved the game, but changed it deeply for the better. The game made with the audience is far better than what the devs were attempting to make on their own (according to them, go watch the post-mortem it's a very good one).

I wrote a review for one of the original God of War games on the old gamespot where you could do that and got emailed and asked to write for a magazine. The payment was getting to keep the games for free which was amazing for a poor kid that lived in the middle of nowhere. I think I did like five of them before the website basically just died. I can't even remember the name of it. I got five free games though! Edit: Also, yes. Yea honestly reading the comments on this video of people giving some pretty major and well known examples of community interaction helping a game's development, and I'm kind of left slightly baffled that the conversation in the podcast drifted towards "well, do we really NEED community development from the studio?" For a community driven game like WOW, FFIVX, Warframe, and indeed, Destiny 2, yes, absolutely. The communities of those games wouldn't be as special as they are, and the games not as long lived as they have been, had it not been for the developers taking the time to really show they care--and that is especially vital in situations where the game isn't living up to its potential, something Destiny 2 fans have been feeling in some manner since basically forever even at the best of times. Another great example is the Master Chief Collection, which bounced back after community demand, and saw a very healthy relationship between community and studio, conversing over the goals of the project. When good will has been lost due to poor decisions or performance, community interaction is necessary to rekindle trust, as trust always begins with a conversation. Coming from a huge MMO/looter guy, hearing Ralph question that vital relationship was even more bizarre.

Are you kidding? Warframe sold out to a Chinese shell company and started one of the most aggressive monetizing schemes in the business. I was a day-1 beta player and watched them systematically destroy what was originally supposed to be a North American sci-fi RPG. They take no community feedback whatsoever and go out of their way to ensure features are disconnected, bug ridden, and monetized. Terrible example..?

@@OniFeez Again, I was a day one beta guy and have a disgusting, hideous amount of play time -- "No" isn't an argument. TennoGen and player councils count for nothing. $10 for a skin is not fair by any standard, nor is ~$10-$15 per character in plat. Putting everything behind a casino-style grind is insulting -- "optional" doesn't apply here. They can't even be bothered to explain most game features -- a FREE WIKI has been filling the gap, as DE refuses to explain their own game in-game, LOL. No two features fit together, so you can be excited about Octavia's midi stuff or get your hoverboard and then... find out you wasted your time because every feature is basically useless outside of the content included in its release window. I was referring the chicken company, not Tencent. Went downhill from there. Asian themes turned it into a stupid anime-like game, instead of the path it was on as a unique sci-fi world. If you like anime, I can't help you, you're already gone. Did you know there was a skill tree at the beginning? Didn't think so :). Only arguing because this is the greatest disappointment in my game library. There are bugs that still exist going on 4 years. They are "agile" to the point of insanity and rarely flesh out any feature, ever. Don't bother carrying the argument -- you're just wrong, and I'm still bitter about wasting anything to support DE in the early days. Apparently they blew player cash on cocaine or something and needed daddy Tencent's help?? Insulting all around.
@OniFeez
@OniFeez 2 жыл бұрын
@@dx3910 what MMO esque game doesn't have grinding in some form? You may not agree with TennoGen or player councils but that doesn't mean that they aren't stron player focused community's led by the developers, so yes... ironically 'no' is an argument. Besides which, at least the grinding to which you refer has a) published list of the likelihood of you receiving the objects and b) purchased warframes done with real money is done with full transparency without grinding mechanics. As long as it's in rotation you know exactly what prime you want and how much it costs. No pulling the lever involved.

When talking about Destiny 2 and Bungie having a lot of community interaction, I think it's important to remember that community is part of what put them on the map. Obviously, yes, Halo was a massive success for them... but as a studio they have gone out of their way to engage with players in a lot of ways. Whether through social media, blog posts, community events, and more; Bungie has always had a strong tie to their community. It's helped them build good will and to put out the best they can for the players. It's also, in my opinion, what saved the first Destiny. That game absolutely fell apart on release, and were it not for the fact that they had such good will from their Halo days, and a community manager hearing feedback and talking with players and making them feel heard... D1 would have ended up just like Anthem. This is especially true because it was published by ActivisionBlizzard, and we know enough to not have to go further into that point xD D2 as a live service also thrives on its community and on knowing what players want, and having community interaction helps reassure players a lot when stuff is going poorly. Being well received and stemming the tide of backlash while you fix things, or play damage control if you make horrible decisions, has saved Destiny and Destiny 2 an unbelievable amount of times.

To me, it's not even that we're unable to parse information. I think that given enough time and proper education, we could become pretty adept at processing info. The real problem lies in the fact that so many of the largest sources of our information are less driven by actually informing the people and more on making a profit. Be that by sensationalizing stories or embellishing them to make them more enticing. We are so inundated with false or overly-biased info that whatever was true to begin with almost gets lost in the sea of misinformation.

It was also made by the official Bioware community and the event was fully monitored by their community manager from start to finish. In fact some participants were miffed that Bioware gave away the cakes because the community manager was in the sideline from the get go and never gave a heads up they would do that and never intended to distribute the cakes in the studio.

Great episode and a really cool interview! BTW: Dan Trachtenberg co-hosted The Totally Rad Show (one of my favorite things to watch on KZbin 10 or so years ago), alongside Jeff Cannata and Alex Albrecht. He's probably one of the few directors who not only gets video games but actually plays them. At some point, he was in the cards to direct the Uncharted movie and I'll never stop thinking about how that would have turned out.

Hey Skillup, a lot of indie titles and early access games actually thrive and succeed because of the communication and community aspect. Games like Deep Rock Galactic, Phasmophobia, Baldur's Gate 3, Dead by Daylight (which was mentioned) and Hades (before it came out) just to name a few. Basically the community all had a hand in shaping these games and they all turned out better because of it.

On my first month on the job (I'm a microbiologist) I was doing what is called a growth promotion test for some of our nutrient media, but I was using syringes instead of micropipettes at the time cause all of them were broken at the time. So, I was already like 100 syringes in (used 1 syringe for every microorganism dilution) when I, instead of closing the cap over the syringe needle, I missed it and stabbed my finger instead (with a staphylococcus aureus loaded syringe) and started bleeding under my double latex gloves. Thankfully tho it was at the end of the procedure, which means it was a low concentration dilution of the bacteria, and I also went for first aid at once, which is not much in that case, I just rubber banded my finger and left it under running water for 5 minutes and started a course of Vancomycin antibiotic. So, yeah, that still comes to me from time to time 7 years later as I type it here.

On community: There are the obvious business angles for community management. Marketing, engagement with the media, better continued revenue (all things I don’t have any numbers on either, Jake). The other part of community engagement is in support of the things that Bungie does do. That progressive stance and using your platform to speak to your values. By engaging with your community, you’re able to listen to them about what they want and to tell them about what you want as well. The only charity drives I’ve participated in from game devs are from WB with Mordor (which they didn’t handle well) and disaster relief that Bungie did (which they did handle well). I participated in these things because they had communicated their values to me clearly and were following through on them consistently. Because of this, and because gaming can get into an insular mindset that breeds toxic behaviors, it’s important that we stand up for developers like Bungie when they are doing the kinds of things that we like and hold them accountable when they do things we don’t. Part of that is acting with indignation when things like this are happening, and letting people know that we do stand with Bungie employees, and support a safe environment for them to carry on with their work and lives. In this way, it’s important that when a company that has been targeted for carrying out their beliefs in a positive way has to draw back for safety that we continue to act as a community to support the positive values that they have been attacked for.

Regarding how community influenced a game positively. Prof. Fat Shady is a youtube content creator who put out a ton of useful tips for Trials Fusion. Ubisoft/RedLynx got him on board for Trials Rising making a whole tutorial section (very well made and fleshed out) which in turn made the Trials games much more accessable for newcomers.

I feel the community problem is two things. The anonymity make us feel so removed from ourselves and them that many feel we can do and say what we want. Also because of how our brains are wired, so many of us think we are entitled and deserve something. I have gotten so far to the other side that it now starts to really annoy me seeing and hearing people acting this way. I have recently seen people say stuff like I was speaking to a developer and they gave me one answer about something now they changed it. And now when I ask they aren't even responding anymore. As if they deserve to be responded to because they paid money for a product. The only thing they deserve is a refund if it is warranted. It is nice asking community managers questions and get responses or at least a little update if they can give one. But they do not have to talk to any of us at all, and unfortunately if this continues to spiral out of control it may turn into them not responding anymore. I play warframe and pay money for stuff once and a while. Digital extremes is about to nerf one of my favorite weapons and a great frame I like. I'm smart enough to know it's the right thing to do and it sucks but I'm fine with it. So many aren't. It's so toxic at times right now by some who think that they don't deserve this happening to them and go on rants on reddit or Twitter or worse they harass someone because of this. It gets me riled up to hear people complain constantly about there is nothing to do in a certain game, or they won't fix this gun, or time to kill in pvp isn't right and they need to fix it for me. No they don't it's their game and they can do what they want with it. When it gets like that people should realize that if they are not happy they need to move on do something else or play something else or whatever. These game companies don't owe anyone anything other than a refund if warranted and we are lucky we get more than that and should appreciate it and not ruin it.
