Beautiful paint job, markings and all! Those markings really look amazing! I know a lot of people say paint colors don't matter, but I really agree with you on that AK "ocean gray", I don't know where they dreamed up that color, it doesn't even look anywhere near close! Nice save on it though. Looking forward to the next update!

I think there’s an issue at AK - I had an interesting conversation with a colleague at a show recently about AK which is too involved to go into here but I’ll discuss it in a future episode

Once again Mr Steve another fantastic result. It is so easy to follow along on your builds. Im an Aircraft Engineer by profession, your research, preparation and presentation are absolutely 100 % on point. It certainly is a learning experience every week for me as i try to improve my personal modeling skills. Stunning as usual.

I added blue to tamiya's ocean grey to try and replicate the colours seen on really early colour slide images which I know to be inaccurate because of the age of them and the then available technology but I really liked the finished combination and hues. Don't get hung up on paint colours. It's hard enough to match paint these days let alone in wartime Britain. I think a lot of guff on the internet about paint colours is just echo-chamber nonsense. Do what pleases your eye, why care what other people think? Excellent series, I'm enjoying, thank you.
@TheModelShed

wartime colour photos tend to be very saturated so I’m cautious about them . But you’re absolutely right- people like to be experts on the web and in modelling forums. If you’re happy with it and you enjoy the hobby that’s all that matters IMO.

It amazes me how varied colors are from manufacturer to manufacturer. My Vallejo Air Dark earth is a very dark brown, I’ve seen some paints that are very light. You’d never be able to say that they were both RAF dark earth.
@TheModelShed
@TheModelShed Жыл бұрын
True - and these were way off. I like the Tamiya earth with Tamiya khaki mix for RAF dark earth - that’s what I used on my Kotare spitfire.

Using the masks for the insignia, code letters and aircraft number does take a bit more work but the results are fantastic. By any chance do you have plans of tackling one of the 1/24 scale Airfix Hawker Typhoon's some time down the road?

Have to wonder if the folk at AK, skewed the finish for "scale effect" where colors look paler at the sorts of "scale" distances we see models? After all. 12" (±30cm) at 1/48 is the same as 48' (near 21m). Now, "scale effect" is much argued, and no certain answer is really out there.
@CAPNMAC82

And, of course, all modeling is "representational" we really have to decide, each of us, what best represents our vision of the final product.

They did that Mac but there’s other things going on at AK. This was the wrong tone completely. I’ve learned something this week about AK which I’ll talk about in a future video - too long to go into here. 👍

AK Real colors are funny. They spent a bunch of money paying experts to research the colors for them, and then promptly ignored the experts when it came time to actually make the paint! Their german dunkelgelb was originally a nice color, but they changed the formula to a much darker and orange brown color. I've bought quite a few of their paints and honestly probably won't use most of them

@@TheModelShed That's how I feel about MRP. Hands down the best paints I've ever used, but their color choice is questionable most of the time. I'm finally getting ready to start the Kotare Spit Mk 1a, and was originally gonna use MRP. I don't like their dark earth and dark green though so I ordered some of Mr Colors newish 75% flat RAF colors and I think I'll use those instead. I'll be using your build series to guide me.

You were right to cover the AK grey and revert to known colours from Tamiya. Nice pick up on the starboard upper roundel, the yellow was a bit out. Numbers, lettering and insignia - lovely finish.

I have a Harder and Steenbeck infinity for all my general work. I also have a badger patriot and renegade for metallics and varnishes. The H&S is far and away the best - performs well, easy to use. it’s much better built than the badgers and easier to clean and maintain.
