Against the backdrop of oligarchic market capitalism, in which so many cities support corporate interests rather than their own workers & infrastructure, this model is a breath of fresh air.

Great work Laura, there is a lot to be done to make communities independent from the corporate sector. There are three major battle fronts: land ownership (it's absurd the inequality and the ownership of it in the uk), the renewable energy production (a community energy scheme can't sell its own energy to its members, you have to sell it to the national grid for 6p a unit that then sells it back to you for 16 - open market?) and money as a tool of exchange not value (check out this article! www.ft.com/content/cf875d9a-5be6-11e5-a28b-50226830d644 ). Keep up the good work!

I've been interested in these kinds of economic models since reading Gar Alperovitz's book "America Beyond Capitalism"...it's worth checking out if you're interested in some more detail. This is important coverage, thanks!

wcropp1 thank you, I'm ordering that book today! I've been a participant in a cooperative business, a collective restaurant, and so believe in the possibilities in this model. So hard to find coverage! Of course I get it on LF!!!!

It is an inevitable evolution in models but Christ! it’s taking forever because of the idiotic domination of the prehistoric models.

Ownership? What do people actually own? Collectivism by any other name is still....collectivism. A proven evil. A popular vote is just a popular vote. It doesn't mean the result is ethical, practical, or profitable. So-called 'renewable' energy is a prime example. It may sound like a good idea, but it cannot survive without heavy subsidies plus some kind of reliable back-up making it unprofitable and impractical, no matter how many popular votes you take. Market capitalism beats this rubbish hands down.

All non-renewable energy nuclear/gas/coal/oil are heavily subsided especially nuclear by many £10'Bs !! In the UK wind and solar make more electricity than nuclear routinely now.

David Grzelecki There is NO such thing as 'pure' market capitalism, all government control markets, especially internal ones; this is just another example of it at a local level.
@tomormiston65926 жыл бұрын
David Grzelecki Even Adam Smith did not want markets to apply to certain areas eg Public arts. The UK co-operative movement is worth £36B at the moment alone
@tomormiston65926 жыл бұрын
David Grzelecki It's based on the UK Co-operative Party's work, a community business focused party, that over the last decade that has rejuvenated many areas.

David Grzelecki We've had cooperatives in the UK since the 1840's starting with the Rochdale Pioneers; your analysis is vastly naive and historically ignorant. Educate yourself.
