Ezri lives with severe brain damage that was caused by encephalitis as a newborn. Now almost an adult, he is surrounded by sisters who plan to care for him throughout life. Together the family describes themselves as "open, connected and atypical in a good way".

I agree. I was a caregiver for disabled adults for about 12 years and always spoke to them the same way I would speak to my friends and family and colleagues. It would bother me when other caregivers would use baby talk with them. I know their intentions were good but it felt disrespectful to me.

Honestly it sounded like the dad misunderstood Chris' question, which was how it feels for you as his parent the times when you cannot recognize Ezri's words? Maybe the dad is used to getting a question about how does Ezri feel when he cant communicate, and thats the answer he uses to challenge people to relate to Ezri, which is really cool.

My heart goes out to Ezri's mom because of the pediatrician dismissing the concerns about Ezra. Valuable time was lost. That part is so heartbreaking. I have had problems with not being taken seriously by doctors as well, and receiving incorrect diagnoses leading to inappropriate treatments and medications which further increased the severity of my problems rather than improving my condition. It is lovely to see Ezri with his sisters and to hear his father speak about Ezrais affinitty for Jewish religeous services. Yom Kippur is challenging for anyone to sit for 6 hours. Even if you go with the simplistic notion that God is love, it's easy to see Ezri's connection to love in his family and so spiritually encouraging to hear that he recognizes that love in the practices of Judaism.

3:50 I'm fascinated by how well the youngest sister knows how to ask him a this/that question. I get the vibe from this that she has her own distinct way of understanding and interacting with him because she's further in age from him than the other two younger sisters are. She's never known anything other than a much older disabled sibling. As an age gap older sibling, I really do believe that siblings who are further apart in age have a much different relationship than siblings who are closer in age.

Yes! I have 2 autistic sons and my 4 other children know that when their dad and I for whatever reason can’t take care of them anymore, they will most definitely welcome them into them into their homes. We don’t know who is going to take who yet because they are all still young but they know what to do when it’s time!

A lot of medical professionals are like that. Some of them are way too proud of their knowledge and in bad way wherein they don't listen properly, disregard patients experience, misdiagnose and do not take them seriously. Not all obviously but it's like a pattern that exists in many of them.

He has such beautiful happy blue eyes! Love the relationship his sisters have with him. His oldest sister said she was his primary care giver but I think she means his protector because she was 4 when he was born & able to form that bond they needed. His parents cracked me up when his dad felt the need to clarify when he drinks... I don't think any of us thought his mom was referring to alcohol. Love this family & knowing that he'll forever have someone to love & take care of him if anything were to happen to his parents. I'm not Jewish, I'm Wiccan; I love how spiritual this young man is & how he is calmed in any synagogue by angels he may see or even by God. Whoa, this video was like looking in a black mirror episode with my family 🤯 it was kinda hard to relate with other children growing up because it was hard to explain that your sibling needed more attention and your family life had to adjust outside of the norm to raise them. Religion played a huge part too. We Unfortunately got kicked out of a church or two because my brother was having a tantrum or sensoryoverload but we eventually found a church with server members who were absolute angels. I worked with special needs in a church. It didn't take me long to realize, when our Sunday school class was a closet of broken and discarded desks, that the church's goal was not to teach them...but to hide them from mainstream. I went to the copastor and told him it was a disgrace, and they were just as worthy of a regular classroom as everyone else. When I mentioned my suspicions, "So, you don't care what I teach them, you just want me to hide them", his response was, "Basically?...Yes!" They were the only reason I didn't leave that church, then and there. I'm so glad you found a loving church who accepts him as a member of the human race. ❤️ We need more churches who are loving and accepting instead of comparing and judging.

First of all, this family has huge respect from me. I work as a special instructor for infants and toddlers and see children when they are first diagnosed when possible. I can't help but be angry at the pediatricians that didn't put a newborn into the hospital within the first 24 hours after seeing Ezri. He could have been medically supported sooner and possibly less brain damage could have occurred. Outrageous!! Secondly, Ezri and his siblings were a joy to behold. Many siblings feel put upon for helping out and these 5 sisters showed such an outpouring of love and respect for him. Kol Hakavod!! Thirdly, thank you Chris for showing religious Jews in such a good light. My heart was truly full to see my fellow brothers and sisters shine brightly. Finally, May HaShem bless this family with much Yiddishe nachas from all of their children. The story of Ezri and davening actually brought tears to my eyes. May Moshiach come quickly!!

I kinda love that she used the word trapped. My boyfriends son is 6, and can't walk or talk, and I always explain his behavioral issues come from the fact that he feels trapped. He can't express himself and that's frustrating. So when he swings, it's not that he wants to hurt someone, he just wants to get his point across, and his siblings ignore him so much sometimes, that he resorts to hitting to get attention, even if it's negative. I just hope the other kids grow up and can be more apart of helping him, because a lot of the time, he gets frustrated because he just wants to do what his siblings are doing. These videos really have helped me become a better parent to my two special needs kids, and I can't thank you enough for giving these people a voice.

Lmao I love the youngest, she's so funny. She reminds me of me. I also try not to give in and let my youngest get whatever he wants. He can destroy something within a second, so there's things he's not allowed to play with, and it upsets him, but he has gotten so much better at accepting no as an answer. He knows that I will give him whatever he wants that's his, but he can't have his siblings tablets or certain toys like Legos, and of course, those are the things he wants most lmao. But it's really good to give him some limits because he is learning to accept no and find something else.

I LOVE this beautiful family! I worked with people with developmental disabilities for over 40 years. I have seen every type of family from those who can't accept or cope with the disability, to families that love and support. I agree with the dad when he says, I believe he sees angels. When my son was little he had delays due to being a preemie and issues at birth. He would get so frustrated when we couldn't figure out what he wanted. It was so heartbreaking as a parent to not know what I needed to do to keep my baby content. He caught up as he got older, thankfully. I can't imagine the lifelong struggle for Ezri. I am glad he has a great support system.

This is like watching my favorite childhood book “All-of-a-Kind Family” brought to life in the 21st century. A loving Jewish family living in/near New York with 5 sisters and 1 brother where the sisters play a role in caring for the brother? It’s perfect! I hope they all read it as kids and enjoyed it as much as me and my sister did :)

As someone studying to be a nurse, it's awful what he went through, and how it could've easily been prevented if they just took the parents seriously. If I heard there was blood in his diaper, that's an immediate red flag, and I'm not even halfway through nursing school. I'm honestly so sick of hearing about chronically disabled folks becoming that way due to doctors not taking them seriously or assuming they're overreacting or something instead of just listening and getting to the bottom of the issue; I mean, what are they there for if not to do that?! When I'm a nurse I'm going to listen to my patients and be there for them, regardless of how easy it is for them to communicate with me. I'm there for them - the money's fine, sure, but I'm there to get to know my patients and their stories, either so I can better help and advocate for them, or so I can use that information to notice the signs in others sooner so serious complications like sepsis can be prevented. I'm definitely gonna have my work cut out for me with the medical system here being the way it is, especially in the southern US…

In my experience nurses are the best advocates for the patients. Not saying doctors aren't great but nurses are generally more involved with them so they will see things the doctors don't. It's been really helpful having great nurses that do that and really listen to me and include me as a part of my daughter's medical "team" instead of acting like I don't know what I'm talking about.

I will say I'm pretty upset about the doctors who didn't take this mom seriously. 😤 It's very annoying that that's a story that constantly comes up when I see videos like this. On the up side, Ezri has a beautiful family who loves him and his personality really shines through.

When Chris sat beside Ezri, it sounded like he was saying "It's Alright". He wants to communicate by all means but just has trouble articulating the words. Going through behavioral health classes working towards a psych degree, I’ve learned that within 100% of communication between 2 people only 7% of it is verbal. 93% is all internal and we do not even know how to process that fully. I challenge myself everyday to make sure that 7% counts. Love his spirit and I will be challenging myself to be as positive and uplifting as him. And for car rides!!

Please do more videos with families who have children with severe mental impairments such as this family. People saying things like suggesting ASL, as though a family wouldn't know about ASL or has not thought of it, when you have this much brain damage you are literally physically cognitively wired differently including your physical functioning, which makes processing different, and I don't mean "different" in the very "soft" way that our society is getting adjusted to, it's full on processes that are debilitated. And also don't you think a family who spends so much time with him, and takes care of him, would already know whether or not ASL is an option, given that ASL is not anything new or rare. People really don't understand this level of brain damage, mental impairment, etc.

I'm a speech therapist. I say he can definitely learn some basic signs even with this level of brain damage to express wants and needs. Of course not the entire ASL system but SOME. He also can use a communication board like pointing to simple symbols to communicate words like "eat", "drink", and "bed".

there's a list somewhere of all the resources girls trying to get an autism diagnosis should use, good luck nora, it may take a while. you actually may find out you don't have ocd and you were just thrown a diagnosis because of the lack of information on autism in girls... though maybe not, who knows
