Michele Sheffield wants to keep her severely autistic 20 year-old son Harley at home but he has become too big and violent for her to handle on her own. She fears for his safety if he was to go into an institution or group home.

I have 2 children with autism, one being severe, and when she starts having certain behaviours I just redirect her or find something to do with all the energy. She responds well to it. Before I really knew what worked well for her, she would destroy things in our home too. Parking your kid in front of the tele and telling him to stop is not going to help. Seems to me he just needs an outlet for all of his feelings and incredible energy. Art, music, sports, any thing just do something.

Really Denise?? Wow, you are wrong and ignorant on so many levels I kinda feel sorry for you. Educate yourself about autism and the spectrum. Oh, and by the way, you can't predict if your next baby will go on to have autism. I had 2 more children (I have 6) and they do not have autism. Why should this man be institutionalized? Because you say so? I don't agree with the way his mum handles his behaviors, but what is she supposed to do, dump her kid off on someone else because she can't cope? No. She obviously loves her son and is doing the best she can. I think he would fare well with intense therapy and finding outlets for his energy and emotions. Some days for me as a parent of children with autism are hard (as in lock myself in the bathroom and cry hard), but never have I ever thought about giving my kids up because of having a shitty day with them. Like I said, educate yourself about autism and ask a few parents of children on the spectrum what it's truly like before you make ANY comments about it.

Not sure if you know this, but they don't know what causes Autism, You don't know that they have it until they are around 18 months and they are human beings not burdens. I feel a lot of pain for this young man and his mother. On one hand, I do believe that as he does get older with his height and size, pretty soon his mom will not be able to be strong enough to stop his physical meltdowns and the obvious solution would be a group home. BUT, on the other hand, like the story she read about a man dying there because he was tazed hits close to home because there are places out there that do not have the skills to deal with severe autistics. I have autism myself and believe me, no one asks for this kind of existence. Imagine how hard it must be for him, not being able to verbally communicate to his mom what ails him. And all those saying she should have him euthanized or aborted, shame on you. He is a human being with thoughts and feelings.

+Shaina Penguin Yes! People seem to think these people are off in their own world and forget they have feelings. Much of these behaviors is a reaction to sensory issues and while I know autism families don't want pity, my heart goes out to this mom. Everyone should have a way to communicate pain and love, some just use different ways and in some cases we are still trying to figure out which way will work...
@ThePenguinbabe

FeministTechUSA You shouldn't hate yourself for it or even hate yourself period. I'm proud to be autistic, but yes, some have it harder than others and it's even harder when we are in a world where not everyone is so understanding. Even though I said no one wishes for this kind of existence, I was referring to being on the lower end of the spectrum who have limited resources like this man. My point is the world needs all kinds of minds and sadly, not everyone realizes it.
@ThePenguinbabe
@ThePenguinbabe 8 жыл бұрын
Dana Joyner Exactly! It really bothers me when people talk about their autistic family member as if they aren't in the room when they are right there. And they do have a voice, sure maybe not vocally, but they have thoughts and feelings and do all means necessary to voice them in ways their bodies only know how to do. That's why some scream, type, or other things. It's hard enough being in your 20s with your body and moods still adjusting even without autism. I'm autistic and 24 yo and my emotions and moods are that of a teenager. And like many families and individuals on the spectrum, I want no sympathy nor a pity party. All I ask is for acceptance and unconditional love.

The people you know likely have high functioning autism. Autism is a scale. There are more severe cases like the man in the video, but there are also people who are almost completely normal with just a few problems with social cues.
@whalesharksarecute954
@whalesharksarecute954 7 жыл бұрын
Yep! Like many conditions, autism can be on a scale from horrible to alright, and sometimes it's hard to tell how bad it is early on. My little sister has autism and when she was first diagnosed doctors told my mom she would never be able to speak. Now she's 17 and she speaks wonderfully, is in normal classes at school and is getting ready to graduate. I ended up learning a lot about autism when I was younger so that I could understand my sister's condition.
@nrg-5003
@nrg-5003 7 жыл бұрын
It affects many people in different ways and the severity depends, unfortunately for him he has it very badly.
@nrg-5003
@nrg-5003 7 жыл бұрын
To add a bit autism can range from someone being able to speak properly and get on with things in normal life and be nothing more than socially awkward and perhaps have a strong interest in one subject which usually benefits them. Where as people like the man in the video have it very severe.he can't speak properly or look after himself. Hope this is clear, someone may explain it a bit better than me but this is just giving you an idea on how far it can range.

It makes me mad when parents act as if it's all about them having to cope with a child. Actually it's damaging to a lot of autistic people to hear that they're a burden and, why not think about the child who is actually going through this? I am incredibly ashamed at the comments on this video. That is the most patient woman on the planet, and I couldn't even imagine having this condition. There are so many kids like this guy. Yet people judge me, because I decided not to have my own kids in fear that I might have one with autism. My sister is severely autistic, but not as bad as this. Why take the risk? I'll just adopt.

Calm down. I stated my opinion & how I felt about an issue. Is that so wrong? Also, I don't FEEL that people are judging me or my family. People DO judge you. Even people within the autism community. It never ends. Do you have or live with a family member with severe autism? If you don't, then you don't understand. It's tough on everyone.

Bikers Y Fans I'm not sure where I stand on the vaccine debate, but I can tell you every case of autism is different. Not all families with autistic children feed them processed junk. My mother fed us healthy, organic, fresh meals every day. We were both vaccinated by the same pediatrician. My sister is autistic & I'm not. Personally, I think there is a genetic link to autism.

I agree. I've got HFA as well, but I'm in high school.Last semester I took welding, and because I took welding my locker is by the autisic classroom. (which is a shit idea, because classically autistic individuals and the loud-ass noises that the bench grinders, sand blasters, plasma cutters and the like make don't make for a good combination) and they give me the creeps.

I have mild Asperger's and am fully verbal and everything, and I can never understand about the different aspects of autism. I've asked my mom "Am I autistic?" and she said no, because people with classic autism are usually diagnosed by the time they're 3, and I was diagnosed with the Asperger's when I was 12. (I'm now 26.) I was also diagnosed with ADD when I was 6, but it's gotten much better; although there are still times (usually when attending sports games) where my senses get overloaded or I get antsy, and I have to go out of the room and take a break and grab a drink. I also dreaded fire alarms at school due to the sharp sound. I do belong to a social group of young adults with ASD. One of my good friends is a member (he's 22 days older than me and also has Asperger's), and he had a hell of a lot more time with school that I did (in both the public and Catholic system); he claimed the teachers and principals were bullying him, but I think it was the other way around as he can get very loud and disruptive; he had to change schools 3 or 4 times, finally finishing grade 12 at a special education centre. One of his principals didn't even know what Asperger's was! My grades weren't very good in high school, but I had a 73 average in my first year of college, 2009-10 (with high 80s in math, chem and physics and a 74 in human anatomy) and an 81 average in first semester of second year (fall 2010), before dropping out and taking some time off due to a diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder. I then picked back up in the winter of 2013 with a night school music program, graduating with honours two years ago. Next year I might take the 1-year full-time music program.
